With the uprighting line, the pitchpole from the trapeze (wrapping the line around the shroud) would have probably mangled you right into the mast. So you know how long your mainsheet has to be, hauled tight there must be a long enough loop to bring you easily in front of the forestay. And do not do it like me, when trying to hold on catch a bare trapeze wire and slide along it with bare fingers... I see the Hobie 16 still has the plastic coating on wires and shrouds. I remember we had a training with Christian Stoll, a very good german cat sailor, when the Hobie Tiger was still young. He told us that when John Dinsdale, the designer, prouldly presented his new baby to him, the first thing he did was cut off this plastic coating from all wires (claiming too much drag). He said John almost cried - but the Tigers really refrained from the coating from then on. Would have been better for my fingers 4 weeks ago with Martin in Vassiliki had John said "I don't care about Christian's opinion".

@JoyriderTV 11 месяцев назад
Yeah for sure - I didn't dare pitchpole when hooked into the righting line for that exact reason! I remember that time with the first Tigers.

Nice one Joe! Taking the hits so we don't have to! One important point when talking about boats running away from you is to make sure you have the boat set up so that it has a slight amount of weather helm. You want enough weather helm that the boat will quickly turn into the wind and stop if you go overboard. This way, if your a decent swimmer, you should have no trouble catching up to the boat.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 11 месяцев назад
Yes that's a good point. The main concern is main out jib in - then the boat will just run away, even if you have a bit of weather helm.

Thanks for this Joe! I'm an aging FX1 sailor and am somewhat concerned about falling off the boat. My apprehension of tethering was realized when you used the righting line. This mainsheet/traveller snap shackle trick looks like it will fit the bill. Cheers!

One day, I want to do a solo sail, fall of my boat, be picked up by another boat, be delivered back to my boat, and continue sailing. Seriously, thanks for doing this Joe! It’s a real safety issue and needs a demo like this. I do like the stories I’ve heard from Old Salts of being dragged for miles while tethered. They probably needed a quick release. As long as you can get your ass back on the boat you’ll do fine.

Thanks Duke, although pretty scary to deliberately stack it, this was pretty fun to make - especially with it being so hot at the moment.

Hi Joe, yes that's right, I've been considering this issue for a long time. I clip myself onto the mainsheet with a caribiner but as you say, the danger of inadvertently clipping on to another rope or something, is always present. So I'm changing to a quick-release shackel like you demonstrated. I haven't fallen off yet, but last week the trap wire on my mate's FX1 broke, and in the space of 10 seconds, he was a long way away and it took about 10 min to turn around and pick me up. Alone, it would have been a long swim to the shore. Great stuff mate. Thanks.

The final “crash” was pretty impressive 😅. What one need really is a rope attached to the mast and clipped somehow to you safety jacket that frees the rope when pulled and retracts and coils itself when released, a bit like the rubber strings of badges that are clipped on our trousers at times for work and access doors, if you see what I mean. 👍🏻

Good Test Joe, And a very useful one at that. One would always assume that sailing solo on the trapeze that if falling off one would just hold onto the mainsheet, but that is most probably not what would happen as you continue into the water...meaning easily letting go of the main and seeing the ship sail off into ether without you. Thanks and I'm sure with the current heat you were loving the test as well!
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 11 месяцев назад
Yeah for sure, the temperature certainly made this a lot more pleasant! I worry more for the light winds - maybe the wake of a ship bounces the boat knocking you off and you're not holding the sheet. I'm kind of planning an long distance voyage for next year solo - so i'm certainly interested in this

Yes, I tried it and what i found was that the extra length was a bit more prone to getting caught - especially when moving in or out from the trapeze. Personally, i was very happy with the snap shackle. Felt safe.

Hi Joe!! I've done it with the main sheet but after seeing this I'm a bit concerned as the f18 main sheet is much shorter. I do add a little bit of rope between the harness and the snap shackle, but not nearly enough to go around the stay in a pitchpole, that much wouldn't be practical to have hanging of the harness. luckily never tested it so far. In any case I'm thinking in adding some extra rope to the main sheet as it's too short for a beam reach with high wind, not a problem racing, thou.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 11 месяцев назад
Yes, I can certainly see how that would end up on a bigger boat - hello mast - ouch! I think when free sailing or expeditioning clipping in, but when racing there would generally be assistance available.
@bowwave59
@bowwave59 11 месяцев назад
I think I’d just stay clipped into the trapeze. That’s my safety line and with the magic marine trapeze harness with built in hook release for more safety. Would it be possible to have a safety pin release on the main block to the boom. Pull the pin with your tether and the boom goes out to the shroud. The boat either rounds up to windward or capsizes. Or a bungee cord on the rudders pulling them full lock once you let go.. so you have to constantly hold the tiller to steer but once you let go turns the boat to windward or into a gybe and capsize.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 11 месяцев назад
It's fine for the light wind but when you're using the trapeze, there's always a small chance that your wire will break. For the QR on the main block. I wouldn't release it as that will cause the boat to bear away rather than head up.

I’m pretty wary about been attached to the boat. Last year my righting line got caught on my harness. After righting I was dragged under the boat and it took at least 2 minutes to unhook. Conditions were windy and if the boat had capsized again the was the real danger of been pinned wrapped to the hull. It was quiet uncomfortable and so hard trying to get rope off with one hand while been dragged. My thoughts are sail in group multi crew or close enough to swim to shore. Been pinned you’ve only got a minute.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing - this has been one of my main concerns and that's why the solution i went for is with a very easily usable quick release. I would only use this if i was sailing solo, open water with no other boats around.
@chrisbeauchamp5563
@chrisbeauchamp5563 11 месяцев назад
@@JoyriderTV I could see the hesitation 😊 Always appreciate you putting it on the line for science Joe. I’ve recently invested in PLB they are small and you can put in the vest. I realise there’s an outlay but cheap insurance is the way I see it, good for mountain biking too in case of bad injury
@nburlon

Joe, is the trapeze not the safety we are seeking here ? If I fall of the boat, being with the trapeze will prevent to be separate for it, isn't it ?
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 11 месяцев назад
Yes, but only if you're hooked in. I think if you're sailing open sea, solo, then being clipped into something more permanent adds a layer of safety. There is also the chance of the snapped trapeze wire. I'm thinking of sailing solo a long passage and i'll certainly be clipping in as well as hooking in.
