I love the idea of video snippets. I also love the longer videos for learning. Snippets are terrific for when you need refreshers or a quick answer in the middle of reporting and/or caring for your orchids! 🤩🥰

Yes I completely support pulling out odd things you find and mention - like the black spot here - and putting into the shorts on its own. It would be *extremely* helpful for beginner orchid people like me 💚🌿

If you keep watching, you will have success. I killed many orchids listening to really novel approaches on other channels. Danni is pragmatic and her advice is geared to the household grower.

I want to say what works for me is adapting to my environment. There is a learning curve where one can learn from others' experience and indications. The progress is in the ability to learn from my experience and years of trying out things. And trusting that experience. Thank you for that video in which you mentioned that the 'indications' can be bent to enjoy the hobby.

I’m really glad I saw this today as I am getting ready to repot 2 new orchids that came in tiny pots. They are in full bloom though so I’m a bit apprehensive but they are in soaking wet total sphagnum and very crowded roots so I’m going to give it a go and put into bigger pots as I am pretty comfortable with being able to keep them watered properly and control the lighting and temperature. 🤞🏻

Ok , I feel better now. I neglected 3 of my poor orchids and repotted them in proper orchid pots and medium from rePotme. I added more charcoal and bark because I tend to over water. Most of the roots were dead and there was black stuff on them /: They look better 3 days later , so I hope they can repair themselves like you said🤞

Omg This just explains it 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Recently I bought a phalaenopsis orchid (my first Orchid ever). It's a very mature and strong plant. Based on it's roots, leaves and dried flower spikes I can say it can be 4 or 5 years old. It's potting medium was terribly old. Some barks around the roots were so rotten that they looked like an animal's liver instead 🤢 and yeah that caused it some root rots. I was so eager to change it, because I was also going on a trip and didn't want to wait and see that acidic pot mix destroy it's roots. So I potted it in leca. I even made sure both leca balls and all the roots are disinfected and sterilized. Everything was fine based on the pictures my cousin sent me, until yesterday... Most of my poor orchid's root system was gone and 3 of it's old leaves were pure yellow 🤦🏻‍♀️ I watched many of your videos before buying my orchid Danni. Thanks to you, I'm trying to save it based on your methods. I just wish I'd seen this video sooner 😭😭😭

Hello Danny, two questions: What about soaking existing roots in water for a time so the vellum plumps up and possible new roots grow then transition into a sphagnum moss and bark environment? Will a rootless orchid eventually produce roots when the stock is soaked in water?

Wondering if I can use my clay pebbles from my hydroponics as medium? I received my orchid in a small clear glass vase with no air in moss. Its very heavy and moist so I took it out of the vase to air out, sitting it on a paper towel . It lost all its flowers within a month and I have cut the stem down as you recommended. Your videos are great.

@Plantsandtoyhorses

With new orchids in mind and how they become used to the compacted moss, what is the verdict on whether or not to repot new orchids when they have the full blooming flower spike, after you bring them home? Should you absolutely wait until the flowers have all died before repotting? My thought is that letting the orchid reabsorb all the nutrients from the blooms, will help it with transitioning to new medium set up and acclimation.
@leonr.4380
@leonr.4380 2 года назад
Very helpful video! Thank you! When receiving new orchids, it is often those details which decide whether the orchid makes it or not - your advice sped up my progress many times! Choosing a transition via adjusted watering is much smarter than just choosing the same medium in which the orchid came in. Question: Apart from transplant shock, I many times experience mold forming at the parts of the Phalaenopsis stem which formerly bore roots that rotted away. Unfortunately the infected parts are not low enough to be cut away, and distancing the stem from the medium doesn't help either, as the rising humidity from the medium is sufficient for the mold to grow. The stem does not get mushy and also does not seem to die off, but is there a trick to fight that mold? It does not stop bothering me.

How do you water rootless orchids without causing stem rot? I have 2 orchids that are in transplant shock right now and lost all their roots. I'm terrified I might cause more issues if I plant it back in the medium with no roots.

How do you know how large a pot to buy?
@leonr.4380
@leonr.4380 2 года назад
There is one statement to which I have to disagree: Those black spots at the stem have to get cut away. There were many cases in which I successfully treated stem rot (and even one case with crown rot) by surgically removing all infected parts using a scalpell and small scissors (all tools must be disinfected beforehand; to do that I prefer holding them under a flame for half a minute.) The open wound has to be sprayed with hydrogenperoxide 3% afterwards and then, when still wet, precisely get sealed off using ground cinnamon. After that, one has to let the part dry off for a few hours to finish the sealing progress, before potting the orchid. Mind that the part which got sealed must not get wet for too long and it also must not make direct contact with the medium. Otherwise that can make the infection return. This is just me talking from my experience, but in most cases in which I just hoped for the orchid to get rid of an active infection by herself, chances of survival were minimal, as moist conditions gave the upper hand rather to the pathogens. Especially since those infections most oftenly befall weakened orchids (by long transport, bad culture at the nursery leading to root loss etc.) Surgery has proven to be very effective, so far there was just one case of stemrot which I couldn't treat that way, as the infection had progressed too far already. The only drawback is that it takes a lot of time and precision.

Why did you not move the loose root sticking upward that had grown outside of the medium soil

I have a phalaenopsis Valacia. I was told to repot her when she arrived. So I kept her in bark. She sulked for a while, finally I began watering her more often, she grew a leaf. Currently she has new roots growing and when I took her out of the pot the roots had growing tips. I changed her potting medium to spagnum moss and bark. I did this because one of the bottom leaf was yellowing. Will she be alright with this change?

I’ve used cinnamon as well on a rotted area on a stem, like on the video. I was careful not to sprinkle on the roots as best I could. I kept the area elevated when potted up and made sure no water went near that area. I swear it stopped the rot. Although the rot could have been sealed off like MOG says in the video by the orchid itself. Who knows? But I use cinnamon a lot for cut flower spikes and leaves.
