It is nice to see people responding to your professionalism, before I started to watch your channel I was already keeping orchids for about 20 years, but one doughter, a busy job, a renovation and other such distractions left me with just a bunch of Phals all over the house. Corona left me unemployed for a while and with a lot of spare time on my hands. So when I started searching RU-vid, your name popped up as one of the first. You professionalism was what drew me to your channel and I have been watching it ever since. I tend to skip the channels promising world beating effects upon using their suggested methods, ice cubes, banana peels, egg shells, mayonnaise, …. Ever seen a nursery use these things? Might tell you something, no? And they are the professional growers 😆 Mind you, since I started watching your channel my collection grew to over 70 orchids… so maybe my wallet is not so happy with that decision 😇

I’m so glad I found your channel. What clarity, detail, and straightforward delivery you have. It’s truly rare. I’ve been growing orchids for a year now. It’s become an addiction I never knew I had. If you have the time to answer this I’d appreciate it greatly. As you spoke to viral videos of nonsensicality, am I to assume egg shells ground up doesn’t do anything or, if I’m already using a fertilizer when I water, yields nothing more to make it worth the effort?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 года назад
Hi, yep that's correct! No need to hassle if you have a good fert, plus tap water already has calcium. Egg shells also don't break down fast in orchid media, they're great for compost piles tho! 😊

Yes... that is a Pretty one! I Like to learn more about the re potting and types of water to use....I enjoy watching you and you explaining things so patiently...My daughter received a Phalaenopsis 2 yrs ago for a house warming gift...the next time I went to her house it was full of water in the ceramic vase...she let me take it home to see if I can save it... I took it home and removed the dead roots and re potted it...it has two droopy large leaves and a baby leaf growing...I re potted it again in 6 mo the little leaf grew half and then It grew 3 large leaves...now my orchid is growing roots like crazy outward...it seems like the roots should be in the bark and I Think the floppy eared Leaves shouldn't be there... What should I do...do I cut the leaves off and re pot or just let it grow like that...or do I have another option... It's just weird I never had a orchid do that...it's tilting to one side also...thank you in advance Ruth Lee

Thank you M.O.G. for all your instructive videos. Question: I saw you went from a clear pot to a non-clear pot. I thought that roots needed light for photosynthesis to take place. Keep up the good work I'll be watching.

I repotted my zygopetalum about a month ago and in the last week it's lost every leaf not on the new growth. SO MUCH ROT. Unfortunately it was potted so the second newest growth had basically no roots when I first repotted. Thankfully the newest growth looks ok and has like 15 root nubs popping out the bottom. Fingers crossed I get it together 😭 repotted it in a 4in repot me pot and one of their mixes.

I have a question since you live in a drier climate and I mostly on the drier side unless it rains .. would you ever do full spag moss for vandas or a mix of bark and spag? The reason I ask this is because I cane Bangkok sunset 3 of them and they seem to like the more moist media and it in full bark the same bark you use and the bottom bark doesn't dry out its always moist and I see a difference n growing root tips when I try to let the bark dry out That is a very beautiful orchid by the way!!

I know what you talking about I just lost 5 orchids followed a lady told to put bananas peel in the pot for fertilizer, first I got all the flyers and after get all the flyers gone y orchids all starting dying.I use hydrogen peroxide and a bowl with vinegar to attract the flyers. The roots all died.🤗

Wow interesting thing happened to me .. I boiled banana peels and used as a fertilizer and I think it was to rich in potassium and killed a few of my plants .. so now I just stick to regular fertilizer from store .. just wanted to share .. vibes from LA
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 года назад
Hi, it's doubtful the potassium had any effect, it's highly likely that the bio load and by products of it (acids and ammonia) had much more to do with your orchid's demise. Try to stay away from decomposing organics in orchid pots.. and also click bait videos :)

Question, can I collect bark from a dead stump and break it up with my hatchet? Or would you prefer I just buy it? "Waste not want not. I used to just collect bark and woodchips from a stump at my last crib, it thrived. I left the all of the unimportant stuff because I have cognitive issue's.

My orchid looks so healthy, lots of roots but still no flower stems. Is it normal for an orchid to not bloom after repotting? It has been about 10 months since I reported it and over a year since it bloomed.

I wonder why you are not putting extra holes on the sides of your new plastic pots? They still need aeration...is it because you are only using sphagnum moss? Thank you for all of your helpful content Sue

Hi, yes I believe slits or holes in the pot are very beneficial for most people. Since I live in an oven devoid of water for most of the year, some things just don't apply to me. So since I did a lot of beginner tutorials throughout the years, I keep the general care tips there and in my more personal videos I do things that suit me more :)

I have only had 1 Phalaenopsis orchid for 4 years. It would have died after 3 months if I hadn't watched your videos. It has now bloomed 5 times while in my care. A friend has now asked for me to care for her mother's orchid also a Phalaenopsis. It appears to be in pretty bad shape. There is a keiki larger than the mother plant with about 8 air runners (term?) about 6 to 8 inches long. It also has a flower runner. I'm pretty sure this is putting a lot of stress on the mother, but I'm not sure what to do with it. Can you advise?

I recently purchased the Monterey Imperial potting mix from repotme for my orchid just want to know if this mix is the right mix for my environment in live in NY. Hi, I don't know how the weather or climate is there, the best thing to do is to try it out and see how you get along long term. Any potting mix is good, it's all about how much maintenance and attention it requires from you, particularly regarding water frequency, that's all :)
