I'm a life time shadetree mechanic 80 yrs old. I've watched a lot of mechanic videos since I retired and I've never seen anyone use those two tools before.
wow to the normal mechanic according to the tool the piston is firing, when in fact is not, you be all day chasing a ghost, thank you, all ways double check the Symptom in a very basic way, GREAT VIDEO THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I got those two tools ten years ago, but as you showed I also found them to be sometimes misleading. Better to do the older methods first to get more trustworthy direction. The price of entry level scopes has fallen a lot over the decade and those offer a better view anyway.
I like your thorough analysis. Without your tools, why couldn’t you swap cylinder coils and deduce a bad coil if the miss then swapped cylinders? If the misfire remains with the same cylinder then analyze further between plug & injector as source of miss. I use a stethoscope on the injector to hear the pintle open & close. Keep your vids coming. Always something to learn!
Ok but wot I don’t get, and wot is not explained, is - if it’s an inductive pick up and the coil is commanded on but not firing, that means the coil is not energised and the field is not collapsing .., So what is the inductive pick up picking up??! Can’t be responding to a 5v command signal 🫤 🤔
thanks for commenting. Great question and often misunderstood. Remember all coils have two sides, primary and secondary. The primary side is current flowing from the computer to the ground to command the coil to fire. That is what the inductive pick-up is seeing. The secondary side is the actual spark, not the command.
Amazing insight. I have used a similar tool tho not often. My assumption was that it was detecting collapsing field of the secondary side. In fact, by yr explanation this tool shld be called a primary circuit tester not a spark tester, as some refer to it. Thanks so much for the insight
Hello Sir. Sorry to be off topic, but I am trying to locate the wiring diagrams to download as part of your Reading Wiring Diagrams series. I tried the website (won't open) and can't get through to your email. The info you put out is second to none! It is much appreciated!
Thanks for commenting. Sorry for your trouble. Yes, the website is down now due to the cost of maintaining it. I can forward the diagrams to you. Use my email to request. Note YT often won't allow email links. Please alter this to the appropriate format, dumar at gmail dot com

So what I'm taking away from this is, those tools are a useless waste of money. I've always just unplugged the coil and injector to confirm whether they were working. I can see them being useful if the connectors are behind the engine and hard to reach.
