LONGER BIO
Saxophonist Bob Reynolds is an in-demand jazz performer, educator, and sideman, as well as a regular member of the Grammy Award-winning band Snarky Puppy. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1977, Reynolds grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he first started playing saxophone at age 13. Although he listened to a range of music as a kid, by his late teens he was a dedicated jazz student. After high school he honed his skills at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he mentored with George Garzone, Hal Crook, and others. As a leader, he debuted with 2000's The Bob Reynolds Quartet, followed by 2006's Can't Wait for Perfect. That same year, he joined fellow Berklee alum John Mayer's band and spent the next five years with the pop star, touring and appearing on such albums as 2008's Where the Light Is and 2009's Battle Studies.
In 2013, he returned to his solo work with Somewhere in Between, which reached number one on digital jazz charts. He then made his Snarky Puppy debut appearing on the genre-bending group's 2014 effort, We Like It Here. Two years later he was back with Snarky Puppy for the Grammy Award-winning Culcha Vulcha. In 2017, Reynolds delivered the EP Guitar Band, which featured appearances from Kneebody bassist Kaveh Rastegar as well as fellow Snarky Puppy members Robert "Sput" Searight (drums) and Mark Lettieri (guitar). ~ Matt Collar

I’m 59. Been playing since 12 years old. In the last 12 years I’ve been on immunosuppressive medication due to kidney failure. I had a transplant ten years ago but am back in stage 4 failure and soon to be back on dialysis. Chronic fatigue is a major side effect. My embouchure stamina has suffered greatly. I’m still picking up every gig and session that comes my way. One adjustment I’ve made is to put a little more Mouthpiece in my mouth than normal. My neck has suffered as well. I’m 6’7” tall and slump a little anyway but when I play it worse. Like Bumpass from the Doobies. Thanks Bob. Good stuff.

I am absolutely going to get one of those t-shirts, 60 BPM is always my sweet spot when starting to work on something along to a metronome :) I've been dealing with an RSI in my left wrist (I am primarily a guitarist) off and on for a couple of years and something that has helped a lot (aside from taking lots of breaks while practicing) is adjusting my technique. I now spend a little time each day during my warm-up focusing on staying more relaxed and adjusting my thumb position to keep my wrist straighter, in addition to lessening the amount of pressure I use to depress the strings. I have been doing this for several months now and the difference in how much better my wrist feels is like night and day. I'm not sure how much that kind of technique adjustment would help for saxophone but it's probably worth a try.

Hey Bob, love your vlog! As a bassist and truck driver who has experienced shoulder tensions, I have found relief by utilizing Indian clubs. I would recommend 1lb., and find Dr. Ed Thomas's method and clubs to fit the bill. Also does wonders for hand and wrist strength also. Hope this helps. Thanks.

Re RSI, wrist curls with dumbbells are good too (start with light ones). I usually warm up with them before I play. Stretches too, before and after the exercising. For stretching there's a very good book by Sharon Butler called 'Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome'.

The building on the album cover is located in Basel, Switzerland. It‘s an exhibition building where for example the Art Basel is taking place. Maybe you guys in the states know the Art Miami? It‘s the same thing but in Basel.

Also, anyone with TMJ should see a dentist or their regular physician. I had it during undergraduate studies, and it sucked. You can get medication for TMJ and/or physical therapy. I was able to overcome my TMJ with lots of water, Advil, more breaks when I practiced, and Alexander Technique lessons. But everyone is different, and the cause may be different for each individual. Go get checked out!!!

Of all of the videos I have watched of yours I don't recall a video that discusses ear training. I understand that transcribing is great ear training, but sometimes I can't hear the notes or intervals. Is there other ways that can expand my ear? Thanks Bob, I'm also loving the new CD!

Hey Bob, What are your thoughts on using a tuning drone vs tuning device for purposes of developing intonation? I’m not sure if this has been addressed in a former Vlog. I have my opinions on both, but wondered if that’s something you commonly address with students or yourself.

Bob, please show me how double tonguing works. :( I've seen so many tutorials talking about making a "ta-ca ta-ca" with your tongue and throat but it isn't working for me, no matter how long I practice it for. May you please get into good detail? I really would like to learn how. Thanks :)

Hey Bob! Could you do a video on writing music as a solo artist without a band? It's easy for me to collaborate with musicians b but I have a hard time writing music on my own. I can keep to a simple 3-4 track demo of melody and bass and let the drummer do his thing, but how do you write tunes without having humans adding their own creativity to the music?
@joelra3702
@joelra3702 6 лет назад
Hi Bob do you visualise a keyboard when you play? I'm a piano player but been messing around on alto for about a year. As I figured I wouldn't be reading much for sax and couldn't really be bothered to learn to transpose, for one reason or another I decided not to learn it with transposition instead thinking about it in concert pitch centered around Eb. I recently joined my high school band on tenor and having issues trying to forget the alto fingerings, trying to learn it the transposed way in C to make reading easier, however when I try to solo over a simple tune like autumn leaves I can't really visualise the transposed chord progression and improvise at the same time. It just seems like such a waste of time buying into this illusion of what key I'm in. Have I made a terrible mistake? I feel like I just need to learn to transpose however I've also heard rumours of enlightened folk in Europe learning sax this way. Should I relearn the fingerings painstakingly with the first key being C? I'd appreciate any input on this, this might sound like a silly question but cheers anyway.

My teacher borrowed me his jazzlab's sax holder last week, no weight on your shoulders, my tenor felt 3x lighter, no neck tension, it was just great. It's a shame it looks so ugly.

I have one too, but the only thing I don't like is it's just not comfortable when sitting down and trying to play. That "chest piece" wants to slide to the RH side of my sternum. For standing up while playing, it's great.

Hey Bob, i'm new to your videos and am looking for some music advice beyond the saxophone. I have recently gotten into composing music with my shotty music theory background. It's really difficult but very fun. I'm at a point where I desperately need critiques but everyone around me just says "It's good". I was hoping that I could show you my song and you would be able to give me advice in music making! Thanks.
