I do worry about the lack of Classes. It potentially means no Cipher, Chanter, Druid and Rangers, for example. So potentially no Animal Familiars, no Spiritshift, or any of the Chanter and Cipher abilities and spells. I do hope we do get them though. I'd be a bit happier if we did. Also being limited to human or elf characters, plus only 2 companions at a time (and presumably not being able to control them easily) is also a bit disappointing.

Art style is fine. Now, lack of ANY classes and only human and elf to choose from!? THAT'S a deal-breaker.

Avowed reminds me of Outer Worlds (another Obdisidian game), which was fine, but only fine. I don't have high expectations but if the game turns out great i will definately buy it. I recently check out Tainted Grail and I have to say that combat system needs a lot work. It feels worse than Skyrim and TESV was released 12 years ago. Despite great dark atmosphere first person combat system is crucial in these type of games. Chivalry II and Mordhau do it great and these games didn't have high budget, so developers surely can achieve it. I recall Tainted Grail because combat looked decent in videos, however after giving it a try i have to admit it needs some polish (especially because it's polish game). Avowed gameplay gives me similar vibes so I'm not that excited but I wish Obsidian good luck

POE1+2 had the amazing setting/lore and intricate class/buff/debuff system and some other neat little mechanics like faction/companion approval. They cut alot of corners to make those elements really shine. Avowed tries to do something completely different but sofar I fail to see what stands out. They gotta have something to hook you / sell you their vision. Outer Worlds had the whacky corporate setting and ludicrious guns. This just looks like Eora light. And I don't mean the artstyle, I don't care about the looks. But IF I am going first person and simplify the combat system THAT much, you gotta give me something else to care about. Like a really, really dense map and/or really, really good quests/dialogues.........I'm just bummed out because I can't make my dreams of a first-person Cipher a reality :(

I'm most concerned about hit impact...right now, there just doesn't feel like there is any. Hopefully they tweak that. I have a feeling the RPG aspect will indeed be 'light', which affects my excitement. I'm not much of a FPS gal without the RPG going along with it. I'll definitely watch you play, though...:)

As a huge fans of Pillars I was really looking forward to this game when it was first announced, sadly the more I have seen the more generic it seems to me and I am pretty sceptical about it now. I really hope I am proved wrong but if what they have shown so far is what is intending us to get excited about the game then I am very concerned.

Obsidian started off by showing a game I was going to get lost in, now I see that I was right to be skeptical. I already own The Outer Worlds, and I stopped playing that before I even finished the first full map.

Love Pillars of eternity games but after the avowed gameplays they showed, my excitement for this one is totally gone. Hope it turns out good

For a game supposedly releasing this year the studio has been strangely not showing a lot. I get the feeling the devs don’t really want to release this year. We shall see if their corporate over lords force the release. My opinion is this game needs to cook more. It’s not just a graphics issue. Obsidian is not known for strong fighting mechanics but for solid RPG. The problem is for whatever reason they chose to focus on fighting mechanics in their game play…..why? Why wouldn’t you lead with the RPG stuff….that’s the red flag to me.

The feeling I keep getting is a fantasy The Outer Worlds, nice game, but not one I played a ton, finished once (pretty fast) and never touched it again.

Pillar had the more gritty realism compared to divinity and bg3 but now they sorta went cartoony and doesn't have the same atmosphere as the pillars game which is a shame. This is the same universe where babies were born without souls

Wolf, thanks for the update video on Avowed! I've been tracking this game since it was announced. I love PoE 1 and 2. And while Avowed will not be PoE 3, I do hope it is a fun game set in the PoE universe!

Also, in a world where Elden Ring: exists, how on earth could this be anywhere near enjoyable or satisfying?

The world and graphics to me actually look fine, more than fine, some of the location look very intrigueing, it's just everything around it, the flow of combat, the lack of deep RPG elements, the fact that after The Outer Worlds I will forever have serious doubts about any future writing from Obisidian. The fact they only made two playable races, two! Flipping two! That's like BG3 having two races, that's how astoundingly bad that is! Two!! There better be dozen different builds, all the classes in skill trees from the Pillars games into this game, cipher, chanter, those unique ones for sure, but I have literally zero faith that's the case.

I went from knowing nothing about this game to being underwhelmed by the little I know now. I hope something cool is eventually revealed to pull me in.

it feels like almost no game devs are equipped to make first person rpgs better than crpgs. Moving a crpg to an rpg seems to lose a lot of the soul

I'm hoping it's more open than outer worlds is, which seems to be what they've modelled animation/graphics after. It just needs enough freedom to let people explore their own solutions to encounters and I'll be happy if magic is varied like it appears to be

There is a lot of not that important, not the best, not ground breaking and I agree on all those. I think it looks limited in scope and production value. However that doesn’t mean it won’t be fun but this is not the game I was hoping for if I am being honest. To me it looks like when they started they had a different budget and game in mind and this is what they settled on. Way scaled back. As a huge Pillars fan and backer I will be following it closely but my expectations and to some extent my excitement has been reduced.

I'm indeed disappointed of that bright-coloured "Oceanian" look. Will give it a chance though, cause I like Obsidian.

I love the idea of Avowed . . . but just wish there was a 3rd person option. 1st person is pretty much a no-go for me. I invariable get motion sickness in 1st person and I find it takes me out of character. I don't like to 'self-insert' and instead like to role play a character and want to see them.

Thanks for the video and thoughts as always. Boy, at least for me, this looks and sounds rather disapointing. Guess it is time to remove it from my wishlist. Oh well. Peace

Interesting, I'll wait and see. Still hooked into BG3 and Skyrim with mods.

In terms of people complaining about graphics, just look at Palworlds. Graphically it's not good at all. But the gameplay itself is what makes it so engaging and fun. Games have been going the route of "Shiny over quality gameplay" for ages now, and it's a reason QUALITY gameplay recently has been outshining the "shiny" games. Dark and Darker is another example of this.

I am big fan of Pillars 1 and 2, and all of Obsidians games, honestly. I can't help but feel this was just the wrong direction. I think after Pillars 2 they wanted to try something different, but it feels like something is missing to me.

Murdering Xaurips in cartoon colour environments just feels a little grotesque. They're so small, some of them in the video are unarmed, and there you are like you're Anakin with a lightsaber in the Tusken Raider camp or going all Grindelwald with a wand and Avada Kedavra on the little guys. They just run around and then keel over sadly and curl up.

Everything they release lately about this game has looked lackluster to say the least...Definity waiting for reviews to come out before I even think of spending my time / buying this. Such as hearing that your companions won't even care about whatever decisions you make..oof inded if true!

Outer Worlds was a letdown. The movement, shooting, land traversal was sub par. Story was good, NCP's good , to great. Exploration was bad because I would always get caught in world geometry and had to restart. This games only hope is that Obsidian doesn't rush it out the door. A no class system is also something I 'm not a big fan of. Yes, I understand Skyrim did it, but I didn't like that either.

The animations at least look better than Bethesda's rpgs. I'd probably play it if it had a third person option. The only first person games I really play is the Borderlands series.

I love Obsidian, and I love Pillars. I love Obsidian and Pillars more than I love Larian and BG3. But this does not look good, I can't tell if I'm more worried for Avowed or for Obsidian.

I like the art style. Combat looks decent so far, but the way it feels to play will be the biggest factor. I have the same hopes for the RPG mechanics. Hopefully it's properly fleshed out and feels more like an RPG than an action game.

I really liked PoE 1 but I never got into PoE2 even after trying multiple time, I always reach stop in the middle of Neketaka. The game's main plot always seem to feel so secondary and unappealing to me (the gods kinda force you into it but never felt involved even if he supposedly killed you it all happens offscreen so I never felt compelled to pursue that goal.) With a different Game Director on Avowed I hope it would shake things up.

Looks like a game I'd pick up on a steam sale. Nothing they showed so far gets me excited to play it as soon as it comes out.

After amazing experiences like Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3, this game doesn’t seem to be worth $70 so far. Is good to know it will be on gamepass, i love RPGs and i will definitely try this.

It seems aight. I'm not hating it, but I'll definitely simmer my excitement and expectations.

Combat doesn't look any weightier than Dark Messiah; A good game, especially for it's time, but we've had games like Dark Souls upping the bar significantly since.

When I first saw the 3d FPS view in initial trailers, I was not excited. The fact that it is Obsidian is the only factor that makes me on the fence of trying it out, based on reviews when it releases.

For me it's always a bummer if an RPG has no 3rd person option. Especially because i'm a sword and board kinda guy, and feel it's way harder to account for enemy proximity in 1st person perspective. Next to the fact that i just love to see my character in the world (looking at you CP2077, don't even start me on the mod 😔). Wondering about UI, is the lack of it a design choice or because still in Alpha? But i like the low/no UI look of it now.

First person works only with guns for me. I see the same problem here, you always having this feeling "that we hit in the void" Hack 'n' slash in first-person view... not for me. i have a very bad feeling for this game, i more hyped for Dragon's Dogma 2

Damn, I missed getting hyped for a game while watching Wolf, I still find it unbelievable that BG3 is out.

The strength of Pillars 1 and 2 were the worldbuilding and story. I can look past lame art direction and Skyrim knock off combat so long as those 2 elements stay strong. But it's been a while now since Obsidian has put something out with a good story behind it.

Unfortunate First person (only) RPG doesnt cut with me , which is a shame cause i really like obsidian , oh well ... at least theres not shortage of RPG's nowdays

looks alright. as long as the story is fun and progression feels meaningful i'm not too fussed over graphics

I loved playing Cyphers in POE. Now this was a very original class to play with (along with chanters). I don't see them coming in Avowed, and that's because I probably won't be able to carry my brain in my offhand while shooting with a gun in the main one. Nevermind... This is a game I will definitely follow until release

I think it looks interesting. One game I loved, Kingdoms of Amalur, had a more animated style instead of realistic, and it was great. Sometimes folks are just overly critical.

great video as always. nice to hear some of your thoughts about the game. especially the seemingly controversial topic regarding the combat. i personally like to play more third person or strategic birdview than first person (except for shooters ofc) but i also think the first person combat looks at least already way better than unmodded skyrim combat. i really like the ice magic but personally i would like to cast magic more with my hands or some enchanted weapong than with wands. and yeah quite a lot of ppl are disappointed its still less "serious" and less dark fantasy than in the first trailer but i still think it looks clean and nicely consistent in its artstyle and i even like the warmer colours. some animations may not be the best but i am very positively surprised about the detail of the skin/faces and armor/outfits. i think thats a good sign. locations look nice and interesting too. (also like to explore more than rushing the main-story ^^) keep it up and thanks for the video!

Was super hyped when that reveal trailer dropped.... after seeing the gameplay and actual graphics, tho... no more interest ._. Had high hopes for a new "Skyrim", but this isn't it unfortunately.

I'm just as hyped for this game as I was when it was announced. But I'm not one to care about graphics or anything. As long as the game is fun and the story is good I'll enjoy it.

Pillars is the only reason I have any interest in this. Would just prefer pillars 3

My issue is that it looks like the outter worlds and the outterworlds was aggressively mediocre. I didn’t hate the outterworlds I just didn’t enjoy it at all.

I loved the pillars games. Even though I'm not as into the fps looking aspects, but I'll get over it to return to the lore and lands.

From what I have seen thus far, I am 100% going only wands & Magic. If the wands isnt per use etc 13x then breaks, instead of unlimted casts :D

I think it's got potential. Obsidian, if anything, have previously made games with soms very interesting choices (Fallout New Vegas and The Outer Worlds at least) so i hope this is good... Love POE1&2 so hopefully this does them justice!

Pillars 1 took place in Redcearas and the Drywood. They fought a war to kick the Aedryan Empire previously, I think.

I have never played any poe game and have no idea what the song is like. If this turns out to be good I look forward to my introduction into the world.

Facial animations in this look great compared to the last game I finished and I really enjoyed that game. Gameplay and story are king. I wish more devs would spend time on gameplay and story and less on graphical quality. Especially if it means a rock solid frame rate.

They had a fantastic Crpg. If they kept the game as a Crpg they would be in a perfect position to capitalize on the BG3 hype. Instead, this game looks like poor man Skyrim.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the game. I know that Obsidian puts an insane amount of effort into story. Sometimes it's great (Tyranny is awesome), sometimes it's just good (arguably Outer Worlds) but they never treat this aspect of their games like an unnecessary hassle. The issue of Avowed is that this game was in a kind of development hell and it went through couple iterations of very profound changes. I would also prefer darker themed game but if it's good then I'm happy. Especially if the RPG aspect is deeper and more meaningful than Fallout 3, 4 and 76. Fallout New Vegas was and still is incredibly good.

Cannot wait! I love the pillars universe so much. To me Avowed looks fantastic (would prefer a game similar to deadfire but anyting in EORA is beautiful). I wonder if Josh Sawyer was involved in the story??? Anyone know?

Hi Wolf! This game reminds me of Morrowind, It also looks like we have to hunt dragonborn/kobold type of beings. The animation is beautiful, a huge step up from Morrowind & less cardboard than you would see in a Bethesda game. However, it looks like there's no map. I'm going to totally get lost in the game. Lol!

the lips and mouth actually sync really well with the dialogue from the NPCs. they just need to get the cheeks and muscles around the eyes a bit more natural.

I'm sure the world setting, visuals, and story will all be top notch. I just hope they improve the impactfulness of combat because it comes across as muted and bland with what we've seen so far. The wand attacks look dainty, like harry potter casting a spell after he didn't get fed for a month. It just doesn't look like there is much reaction from being hit, either by the player or to the player. This might just be because of the first person perspective, but I hope they make improvements to it. Either way, I'm sure it will be a great game.

honestly if gameplay is a bit more then skyrim but the magic is crazy, theres different abilites and an actual impactful story then im def fine with less crazy fluid combat and less realistic graphics, this is what my expectations for this have been since it was announced

I'm just not excited for this one, and every time news is released I become even less interested than I already am. They're restricting our choices of race, going classless and there will be no companion approval system. If I want to play Skyrim, I'll choose my heavily-modded version over Skyrim-lite, and if I want a great story with well-written characters, I'll opt for games like BG3, Pillars of Eternity 1/2 etc. Meanwhile if I want an ARPG, I'll look to Cyberpunk and the newly updated Witcher 3, or, Hell, even heavily-modded FO4. We'll see... maybe Avowed will be a pleasant surprise, and I hope that is the case, but.. at this point, I just can't see anything there that might engage me. It looks like they're trying to be all things to all people, without really excelling in any one area.

Looks way more like fantasy Outer Worlds than PoE. It's a good thing they didn't go for a realistic look : as they don't have the budget of a BG3, you would get the creepy NPC uncanny valley effect like in Starfield or most AA that try. And it probably would run terribly like Wolf said, Obsidian hasn't the best track record for that outside of isometric perspective.

Appreciate the content, but this didn't really change the feelings I have. Over the last several years, I think we have all had it proven that nothing should be trusted until the public has its collective hands-on time when the game launches. Only true test and information that can be trusted is such aggregated and disseminated. I'm beyond tired of BS hype and prop up of anything only for it to be shite upon release. I'd say Larian and BG3 are an exception, not a rule, and a rare one at that.

Honestly, I liked Pillars but not enough where it jumps to my mind when thinking about Obsidian's latest and greatest. I like the first game mostly for the old school CRPG gameplay but the wrold and lore didn't grab me. The second game even less so as the companions and characters felt a little tame and some of them felt like they were supposed to in different setting. So Avowed didn't really catch my eye when it was first announced and even less so as I see more gameplay. I only find first person POV "immersive" in shooters but for everything else I much prefer third person, especially when we are talking melee combat. I am also not that big of a fan of prequels as I would rather learn more about what happened to this world after the events of Pillars 2. I guess I will wait to see how it holds up at launch.

I play Obsidian games for the entertaining stories, and so far they haven't shown us that. It has made me less excited for the game.

this is my most anticipated announced game, we dont get many first person rpg’s in general, even less so in medieval fantasy setting, so im stoked, btw those disappointed by its colorful artstyle, mayhap you can get your fix from ‘Tainted Grail: the fall of avalon’…another first person rpg im super excited about

I love how we say an RPG played on a computer is definitely not a CRPG :D. It's so true, but so confusing for an outsider i guess. For me it gives a bit of a Divinity Original Sin in 3D vibe. Way more than the PoE-vibe which seems a bit grittier to me.

I actually like the art style i hate how many modern games look like their in dark mode and like the vivid colors. Graphics have never been important to me my top 4 games in 2023 are BG3 (obviously), Hi-Fi Rush, Caccon and lethal company. And only one of those is graphically impressive and i don't care about that i care kore about the: freedom of choice, interactive combat and amazing writing. The only thing i fear is that the only game she had heavy involvement outside if just writing was bade TOW and it's first dlc Peril on Gorgon. Both had solid B+ writing but their choice and consequences were severely lacking. Usually the player just getting a slap on the wrist or the choice being negagated by an obvious third option where everyone wins. Hopefully she took that to heart and we will see actual consequences to iur action IE lock us out of content for the choices we make.

I’m very excited.

The trailers for this game have thrown up lots and lots of red flags. It looks terribly generic and extremely under developed from the presentations we have seen. Maybe it will turn out to be spectacular somehow but I just can’t see that happening.
