Awair Element geni.us/AwairE...
Awair is a company that has been focusing on helping us understand how important air quality and making sure that we do it with a sense of style. One of the things I love about Awair as a company is that they understand that as fast as indoor air quality can change, we need to make sure that the air quality sensors we put in our houses are built with a design that will blend in to our homes. The Awair Element is the latest addition to the Awair family and addresses one of the drawbacks of it's big brother, the Awair Gen2, which is the cost.
Although the Awair Gen2 is one of my favorite devices and I love the warm organic feel that the wood finish brings, I completely understand that the price associated with the premium materials can be a barrier to some people. Fortunately, Awair brought us a device which still delivers on the aesthetic and style that the company has become known. And the best part is that Awair has managed to deliver what I feel is a great looking device that delivers on almost all the technical benefits of the Awaire Gen2 while still managing to cut 25% off the price tag of it's big brother.
Beyond the lack of the wood finish, there are a couple of technical differences between the Awair Gen2 and the Awair Element. The Awair Element does not include the light or sound sensors ( which aren't currently exposed at this point in time so there's no tangible loss of functionality to current customers ). As well, the Awair Element does not include the knock feature of the Awair Gen2 which allows users to cycle through the interface by knocking on the top of the device.
On the bright side, the Awair Element delivers the exact same AQI sensors that make the Awair Gen2 one of the best in class for consumer grade AQI sensors including
- Temperature Sensor
- Humidity Sensor
- Volatile Organic Compound Sensor
- Co2 Sensor
- Particulate Matter 2.5 Sensor
As well, the Awair Element also includes a consistent interface experience with easy to understand Awair AQI score displayable on the LED which can be easily read from across the room. No need to grab your phone or ask your voice assistant, the quality of the air you're taking into your body can be quickly understood with a glance from anywhere in the room.
I'm a big fan of Awair in general and the Element is a more economical addition which will complement my existing Awair products in my journey to make sure that my families air health is addressed in my entire house.

Great talk about the Awair - if I have a 2 story home should I get 2 devices probably??

Great video! I think I mostly agree with your review, but there are a few caveats: I've been using the Awair v2 for a bit over a year now and it recently started disconnecting from WiFi on a regular basis. I've been in contact with their customer support but unfortunately that hasn't proven to be very helpful. Another thing that I dislike after using it for a while is that the noise that feeds air into the device seems to get noisier over time. I'm thinking of finding a replacement for the fan so it will run quieter again. Regarding HomeKit support: I've integrated mine with HomeKit via Home Assistant but that's probably not everybody's cup of tea.

Appreciate the kind words! Sad to hear you’re having wireless issues. I can say I haven’t see the same thing with my Awair Gen2. I saw some issues with my Awair Gen 1 but those resolved when I moved to Ubiquty wifi. (I’ve only run Gen2 on UBNT). I’ve heard the fan noise comment before but I’ve also never experienced that. I used a sound meter a out 1’ away from the device and the sound level was negligible. I do have white noise and an air purifier running so ion not saying there’s no sound, but just that in my specific environment the sound level doesn’t break the baseline audio level of the room. I ran the Awair HoneAssistant plugin for a bit (even wrote my own python library and collab’d with someone to put together a custom Hass component before the “real” one was released ). I decided to stop running the integration as I ran into issues with Hass on a Pi but need to get this back up and running now that I moved my Hass over to a Intel Nuc.

Chris Young Interesting. I’m also running my home network on UBNT. My issues only appeared a few weeks ago. I’ll see if if can find any patterns that could help to diagnose the issue. Right now the disconnects happen fairly randomly every couple of hours to every few days.

Interesting... You may want to check your Unifi instance logs you see if an AP upgrade happened around the time where the problem started. I ran into something similar with my Ring kit last year and only solution was to downgrade my APs for a few months while UBNT identified and fixed the issue.

This is great Chris! Thanks for sharing it with us. I absolutely love that they're using USB Type C! So you do you get recomendations on how to fix the issue if it tells you that some of the readings are off?
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 4 года назад
Thanks Dial! Yes the app does have a tips page where they return individualisés recommendations based on the sensor readings. Sometimes they are just encouraging words to keep it up, sometimes recommendations to fix some issues. One of the other things I like is that they also occasionally place links to other longer resources to educate you more on different aspects of air quality.

Thanks for the vid. Interesting device for sure, that I'd grab when the price comes down a bit. Oh and hey, replace that battery on your smoke alarm or whatever that was! :)

lol. Thanks Peter! Awair is currently top of my list for Consumer grade AQI sensors. There’s a couple of places where I wanted to add a couple more of the Awair Gen2 but the price (concert to Canadian) made it just too expensive. The Element brings it into a price range that’s easier to deal with. Yeah... that battery was killing me. It’s actually a OneLink AQI that I’m decommissioning. It’s actually stuck in a padded box and then stuck in a closed closet. Unfortunately I only heard the beeping in my hotel room while editing the video. Fortunately the battery has run dry and should never, ever, ever be a problem again. :).

Great, clear review, like always. Thanks! Have you seen any carbon monoxide detectors that work with Homekit?

Not in an AQI format. I do have a couple of the OneLink first Alert smoke detectors that also includes a Carbon monoxide detector though to cover off this need. Might be something to look at?

@@Homekitgeek it told me we were killing ourselves, the apartment had unhealthy levels of CO2 and PM 2.5 we have to run the bathroom extractor fans to keep the levels in the green. When my wife cooks spicy food PM2.5 soars and CO2 rises (this place has gas cooking with no vents to outside just back in your face when cooking)

Useful video thanks. Don’t prefer the voiceover approach to audio. Watching silent films with audio added later is not amazing. Tubers do it because it’s easy but it takes the viewer out of the action and I find it hard to watch.

Nice, I have 2 Awair Elements! How do you get so many products for free?!
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 3 года назад
I really enjoy the element, but the extra sensors in the Awair Gen 2 and Omi are definitely useful. As for products, work hard - hustle - try and show value to my audience. I’ve been working with Awair for a few years, including creating python bindings, feedback on products, working through bugs etc... Just have to grind it out.

There’s been talk but nothing committed publicly. We just need to keep letting Awair know that this is an important feature for us.

Regarding HomeKit support: while there is no official support, there is a Homebridge plugin for it that works great.
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 4 года назад
There also one for HoneAssistant. I actually wrote one as well but someone beat me to submitting a PR. :). The issue with the Homebridge and HassIO plugins are that they are leveraging the Awair cloud API instead of a local device API. Most people won’t know the difference or care but I prefer whenever possible to stick with local communication. Really appreciate you pointing this out though! It’s always good for people to remind us that there are other ways out there to make things work. I often forget to mention that because of my personal bias towards local communication for HomeKit. I have to work on that. :)

So got this device as it’s available in Canada now. One thing I noticed that weather icon in the main screen near setting gear, I don’t have it. Is there anyway to get that in settings? One of their screenshot on App Store also shows outside weather and AQI with awair data on same page but don’t see anywhere in my app. Am I missing something?
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 4 года назад
Did you set your location for the home? Top right corner of the app there’s a Home icon. Tap the icon and see if the location of the active home has been set properly. I’m guessing that might fix your missing weather. :)
@iVue
@iVue 4 года назад
@@Homekitgeek That's where I checked the first and location is perfectly set and shows my city. double-checked the ios location permission also and it is also set fine so don't know what is wrong. I have even tried to reinstall the app but it didn't help. I have the latest firmware 1.1.0 and software 3.10.0.1, I hope they have not removed this functionality...As I even don't see Sleep report which is there in your settings as per video.

I don’t think there’s any limit. I’m logged into my Awair account on at least a couple of phones and an iPad as well as using the API. You should definitely be able to install the app on your phone and iPad.

Hey Me! Awair did ship to Canada previously. Might be relayed to pandemic shipping issues. You might be able to contact them and see if they can ship to Canada. They have always been great with support for me.

Chris Young thanks for your reply. Looks like they have always struggled with Outside US availability. I remember being in contact with their support around more than year ago that if they can do anything about shipping and importing cost to canada as After all those cost it was making price almost 1.5 times original. And they promised me that they are launching it for Amazon Canada but it never happened. It is one of those product which exist from years but never make it Canada.

This device is not accurate. The one i have doesn't even give me the correct temperature. And if you are worried about pollen the awair monitor cant measure pollen because its too big.
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 4 года назад
hey Radu, I’ve actually found it’s pretty accurate when comparing to other AQI sensors, but I have found that for temp specifically there can be some noticeable variation in a room just by where you place the sensors. Is it possible you’re hitting this? For the pollen piece, you’re right as pollen is typically too Legerinho to be picked up by the PM2.5 sensor. On the bright side, there are starting to be more and more public data sources for pollen that are accessible throughout the world. I’d love to see Awair incorporate localized pollen counts in the app as well. Might have to suggest that! Thanks for the comment!
