I didn’t look at this comment when I was watching this and I figured it out by myself. I was thinking to myself for a minute saying “WAIT, HES THE DAD FROM HOME ALONE” I felt so smart and then I saw this comment and I’m like oh. Someone else also recognized him 😂
What's wrong with letting him come and go as he pleases unless he had an escort with him? Leonard can learn things from the new world as he goes out. You can't treat a cured patient like a prisoner! Just let him go to a movie theater or to the grocery store or to the amusement park and then come back safe and sound with his escort, saying how great his day was. Justice for Leonard.
True, but this film is set in the past. Nowadays we would do things differently. He should be able to make progressions with little steps. If a step is successful, it is time for the next step. If he goes out with an escort, and it is successful, he can walk around the hospital without an escort, but has to promise that he won't go too far.
He didn't want an escort, he wanted to go alone, as he pleases; that independence and not be treated like a little boy. So heartbreaking watching him get dragged back into the ward area while the view of the sunny outside world gets smaller and smaller :(
@@tinyrachy Yeah that’s what I didn’t like about the movie they woke up people that been asleep for 30 years and they aren’t allowed to have a life out of the Hospital. It just seems so pointless to wake them up.
@@robertdeffenbaugh9004i don't think they had a plan yet remember the drug was experimental they didn't know what the effects might by like added aggression was a side effect and also remember that this only lasted like a month or two if that so first they need to make sure the drug work and there's no side effects which will take time to observe and study the individual then after they know the drug works (it did but temporarily) they would have to come up with a plan to give people theyre life back they can't just say will the drug works come back if it starts not working
But that's exactly why caution was called for, for all the sympathy we have for the patient. Thirty years catatonic--what if the drug suddenly failed, or he had a stroke, or just plain got lost? The board was right, and as it turned out the drug did stop working. I don't see a problem with someone being there, even at a distance, as long as the patient was allowed to go where he wanted to. Rehab patients of all types are regularly accompanied by an aide until they're fully self-capable.@@robertdeffenbaugh9004
@@jflsdknf I have mixed feelings about this. They could take very small steps and if this went well, then they could take another step. I am in the autism spectrum. I also made small steps to progress to what I am now. First I learnt to travel by train with my mother. She slowly decreases guidance. For example: "Tell me when we are at the railway station where we must go out. Then I will say whether you are right and wrong." Now... I can travel indepedently without any help: booking flying tickets, book a hotel, using the public transport. Those symptoms are a valid reason to me to say "no" to him. Maybe they would not say "no" in 2020 when there were no symptoms.
What a great movie, done by two legendary actors. This film was said to be Williams top favourite film he enjoyed being apart of, same thing for De Niro. The film literally touches your heart, and teaches you the value of life and how many people take it for granted. God bless Williams and Oliver Sacks. Two heros in a better place now. It's also amazing how Williams a few years later would battle a similar brain trauma/disease. Theres no words that can fully describe this movie. Astonishing. I could say the part that hit me the most was when Leonard had said he couldn't read anymore, and how he told his lover that it was his final time seeing her, like holy there is so much that could be said about the film, just you can't describe it, you can only see the film for yourself. God bless Williams, Sacks and all those patients who had suffered, and battled. Legends. Such an under-rated film. Pure feelings. 7.27.2020
Oliver Sachs and this great movie takes us into the reality of people suffering, like the great movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, written by Ken Keysey. We are feeling human beings, which is lost on most psychiatrists. Both Jung and Jacob Moreno broke with Freud because of his dogmatic theories. There is light in our darkness and Symbols of Transformation that can awaken us to a greater sense of well-being, even when going for a walk.
For the movie Robert De Niro filmed a scene with "Lillian T.", the only surviving patient from Oliver Sacks' book, "Awakenings". She was also said to have been the most outspoken patient in the 1973 documentary about the patients, also called "Awakenings
The shame of it all, was that the clock was ticking, and because of those doctors so much time was wasted not getting to do those things before everything reversed.
I feel bad for De Niro’s character here and furious with the medical staff they really let him down and made him regress. All he wanted was the opportunity to take a little freedom but they made his dream rush holt.
@@wailer27 that’s pretty harsh. There is a lot to unravel from this film and he was just making an observation; I didn’t realise his tic beginning to show at 0:25 but after coming back to this scene I’ve only just caught it for the first time.
@@imcallingjapan2178 You sir are an (‿*‿). DeNiro sucks when he’s not playing a gangster. Those are the only roles he’s done that are tolerable to watch. His acting skills have declined considerably as he aged and it’s evident that most of what he does is for the money. In addition he’s been shown to be abusive to employees, is not well liked among his peers, has lost awards or been censored by award organizations due to his crazy public behavior and hate speech. If you want to idolize him that’s your business but don’t go around name calling people who think his acting sucks.
