This was the first song that they did after Avi left and before they brought in Matt! We were all missing Avi like crazy and I know that they were too. This was wonderful to see them continuing to soldier on without their Bass. ♥️

As far as I know, this and Dancing On My Own were the only songs they released without a bass. The four of them *did* go on the TV shows Lip Synch Battle and Rap Battles (against Bel Biv DeVo) though 😄

If you like the rhythm of this, check out "I Saw Three Ships". There is no official video, but it is a picture to focus on while listening to it. They did it at their concert and the same rhythms and more were there.

Sweater Weather is a great song to react to and it's one that very few people do, it's not a Christmas song but I believe it is on one of their Christmas albums. Merry Christmas 🎄⛄! Had to add I can remember everybody went a little bit crazy about how she was dressed in this music video.

I had never seen/heard this one before, thank you! With the ‘body percussion’ it reminds me of their new one, “I Saw Three Ships” and also, “White Winter Hymnal”. I love the PTX spins they incorporate in every song. Can’t get enough.....more please!

PTX loves to stack their voices one at a time in several of their arrangements. Usually, they do so within a few measures, not verse by verse like here, but it’s one of my favorite things they do.

I think what you were getting at is the simplicity of this rendition. But I think the song-- away in a manger -- is all about simplicity, humble beginning. So their treatment of the song was interesting, beautiful, but at its core very simple.

Avi started teaching Kevin to sing when they shared an apartment after the Sing-off, despite his insane musical ability, I don't think he'd sang before that. And itxs been such a joy listening to his vocal ability developed over the years. This was one I'd not heard before (I've just realised in the last could of months that I should listen to their Xmas stuff, because they upgrade all the originals I'd grown tired of or outright dislike for...their version of "o come all ye faithful" blew me away), it definitely does have a slight..not a gap as such, but it's just lacking just that little something extra in the saces that the bass would usually be. What's interesting is that they didn't have Scott filling lower notes as they had Kevin's additional tenor vocals in the upper registers. Perhaps they tried it and it didn't work because this shows how much Scott's soul & midrange baritone is definitely vital to the vibe. Given the date you gave, I would say it was in that in between period (iirc, Avi left in the Summer and Matt came on for the Xmas period, but I suspect they probably started recording the Xmas stuff late summer/early fall so that it was ready to go, that would mean just before Matt joined. Or maybe even even little earlier but with them all knowing Avi was leaving, perhaps they didn't want record it with him if they weren't going to be able to perform it live. But, i would expect if there's a live version of it then it would likely have Matt there. That mandolin looks sick, dude, f you hadn't said that's what it was I wouldn't have guessed; I love seeing traditional I instruments get a modern reimagining. What great memories to have of your family though. I think the retirement thing is pretty common, my parents always said they didn't know how they ever found time to fit work in because they were that busy when they retired.

I just saw this for the first time and noticed how much you like the hand percussion of the song. Please, please look at their song White Winter Hymnal. You'll love their percussion in that. It's sadly a much-neglected song from PTX

If you ever get the chance check out Kevin at age 17 at Carnegie Hall in a program called from the top. He plays the saxophone and can fill you in on his background. He went to Yale University and he can also speak Mandarin. You will be blown away!!!!!

I always thought of Away In A Manger as a baby's song, something you sang as a lullaby or taught very small children to sing so this is lovely with its complicated harmonies and keys. It takes it out of the category of super simple lullaby. But you said they didn't do anything crazy? Is that because bathtubs and chandeliers in the middle of the woods is not crazy? LOL

If you ever want to listen to a great acoustic album with mandolin playing is Nitty Gritty Dirt Band "Acoustic" album....I loved that album. But dang, Mitch looks insanely like Freddie Mercury.

You guys and of course PTX can even make Away in the Manger fun. PTX has almost always puts a song or two on their Christmas albums that aren't necessarily Christmas songs, and boom all of a sudden they are Christmas songs. As soon as we get into the new year you need to check out some of their individual stuff. Superfruit's Man.EXE, Avi's Change on the Rise, and anything by either Kevin or Kirsty. Kirsty's work is very emotional and very sultry. You should see and hear Kevin shred on his electric cello Mr. Belvedere, (don't kill me if I got the name wrong) any metal fan will love it.

there is another song they did right after Avi left and it tugs at the feels a little. I had only seen this video one time and didn't realize until you mentioned that Avi wasn't there. Seems odd to see a video from 2017 that didn't have him in it.

I used to think I didn't like bluegrass music, then I had a DeadHead co-worker who got me into Dave Grisman, which led to Dawg Music, The Flecktones, Stephane Grappelli, and on and on, until I realized that it wasn't bluegrass music I didn't like but bluegrass VOCALS.

I understand why you chose this one, but please think about your next pick being from their newer songs, possibly even a secular one. Avi left the band in Sept of 2017. Matt was taken on for the Christmas tour of that year and offered a regular position in early 2018.

Forgive my autistic slowness. I have trouble with letters sometimes and keeping up with people talking. You said there or four different ones when you did Home Free and I didn't catch them all. It's just an idea it's easier to just say click on the tab and check everyone out, but I don't have a channel and don't know how it works. But it's cool and you've got work so have a good day and don't work too hard.
