The Kingston Trio performs its arrangement of a traditional sea chantey from their 1962 album, "Something Special." Presented here is the original acoustic recording of the group without secondary instrumentation; the album as released included heavy overdubbed orchestrations by arranger and bandleader Jimmie Haskell.
"Away, Rio" was the last of more than a dozen chanteys recorded by the Kingstons in their first ten albums. The group was beginning to move away from adaptations of traditional songs and toward what would become known as singer-songwriter numbers.
The video includes selected oil paintings of some of the great clipper ships of the mid and late nineteenth century, including two of the most famous, Britain's Cutty Sark and America's Flying Cloud
