Just a note. The RC 166 / RC 167 series of 6cyl GP race bikes were a 22,000 rpm redline tempermental beast of a bike. They had no idle jets in the carbs so constant rev'ing was required when clutch in. High gearing meant slipping the clutch to get going. Any issues with the gravity fuel feed, dirt or heat vapourization, meant instant stall.
@teech16
@teech16 4 года назад
Very lightweight crank and no flywheel so revs have to be kept up all the time.
@peterg2yt
@peterg2yt 2 года назад
They didn't have a 22,000 redline. Comments like like are what folklore is made from. The RC165 (in the video) produced maximum power at 17,500, the RC166 was 18,000 and the RC174 at 17,000. The RC166 rev-counter went up to 20,000 and the RC174 was (is) 18,000. In the case of this particular ride by Steve Plater on the RC165 his task of setting off was hugely hampered by the fact that the bike had destroyed its first gear, so he was in second gear on an already 'tall' geared bike.
@jiboo6850

@@peterg2yt exactly. he's nursing it pretty hard. he doesn't want to abuse it. it's a piece of history and no parts to repair. personally i wouldn't even tried to ride it. the clutch must be cooked slipping this much on 2nd gear launch. big mistake to me to even try.

That's a bit of a responsability an handful what with it cutting out, was it vapourizeing or simply running out of fuel due to float height,as Isle Of Man sustained high speed,perhaps more so than the circuits its run on.It seemed to Peter out after a good long blast then the down changers for slower sections,all credit to Mr Plater great stuff.

OMG! That sweet curtain-ripping scream of the greatest piece of technology of the mid-60's.😁 My Gawd that thing was fast for a 250cc bike!!! I'd be grinning my mf ass off too, riding that piece of history.🤣 They had no idle jets, so it was a full-time job to keep the little bastards running, never mind, up in the 12,000+ rpm range where they actually *started* making good power. Are you sure this isn't an RC 166? The RC 174 was a *little* more forgiving, but not much. The 250's actually cranked out around 55 hp.@17,000 and the 297cc. RC 174 was around 67 hp. They had 3 coils firing 6 cylinders, and a magneto and 3 sets of points behind the cylinder barrels up on top the engine case. Still wondering how they kept the point 'float' down to a point where they could rev that high. Can you imagine how much more power these would have produced with a good hot electronic ignition setup?! What an amazing piece of engineering, and I *REALLY* appreciate the 360 degree camera view to look around while Steve was piloting this little monster!! Fun ride!😍👍👍🚴🏿‍♂️

@peterg2yt

Definitely an RC165. I had ridden my Beale replica RC174 around the course in the Classic Parade a couple of days earlier. I’m not at all sure that the modern mappable ignition on the Beale 174’s produces any more power. They certainly don’t fire up as easily as with the magneto, where simply ‘paddling’ the bike and dumping the clutch gets the engine running.

Credit to TO for managing to keep this thing going at all after all these years with no spare parts to fall back on. Very trusting of them to let anyone else ride it; especially round the IOM. Before the FIM banned these multi's, Honda were already developing a V8 250. Imagine that? They were already running a 125-5....so a V10 would have been possible.

@cidertom5140 3 года назад
dave it will tick over at. 3,000
@peterg2yt
@peterg2yt 2 года назад
@@dave-hr6dt The engine will actually run steadily at about 4 - 4,500. There is no idle, but you can hold it steady on the throttle. Peak power on the RC165 (this bike) is 17,500. No point in revving it any higher (although Dave Roper was blipping it to 19,000 at Jurby a couple of days previously - whilst undisputedly a fast rider, he either has the mechanical sympathy of a gorilla or hates the owner of the bike!). The bike being ridden here had no first gear which made the start off very difficult. If it had NOT dropped a valve (quite likely the result of aforementioned over-revving) Steve Plater would never have made it arond Ramsey Hairpin.

There is a different technique to riding this kind of exotica modern riders are used to bikes having a tick over and just stomping it down through the box but bikes like the honda have to be blipped on downshift matching road speed to optimal revs or to put it simply keep the revs up, however in this case I think there was a problem aswell as I noticed an increase in oil temperature whether this was indicative of the problem I am not sure.

I recall an Alan Cathcart test and this beast simply stopped below 9000 rpm and needed 12000 just to pull away. But it did rev out to 17500 / 18000 with seven speeds. And even today 70 bhp from just 250cc is bloody good for a four stroke. And didn't they sound glorious?
