Herbert is a german treasure. Maybe not the most perfect singer ever but every song of him hits right in the heart. "Der Weg" is a masterpiece and an emotional rollercoaster. Thank you Herbert for roundabout 40 years of joy, and I´.m saying that as a Metal/Punk-fan
Herbert Grönemeyer & band always did a solid job in terms of music. But what made him really stand out were his song texts - poetry at its finest and therefore hard to translate -, a beautiful play of words taking your soul on jurneys and blunt, witty messages delivered with love & compassion. That's the main reason why people in this video keep singing and cheering him. In order to thank him. Incidentally: Mensch = human being.
There were 65.000 people in the arena (Veltins-Arena auf Schalke, Gelsenkirchen, Germany). On the day of this concert the heat was on. 35 degrees Celsius even on 8 p.m., when the concert started. And Herbert Grönemeyer is one of the artists with concerts of three hours pius x. This was on the first part of this concert. After about half of the concert he changed clothes. He needs this "catwalk" into the middle of the crowd. He wants to be in the middle of his fans without any stagediving or anything like that. This was one of the first concerts after a three and a half year long break of grief. He lost his wife and his brother within four days in November 1998.
"Mensch"= Human being is one of his greatest works over so many years. In the songs of this CD he mostly processed the death an loss of his wife. She died of cancer.....
My boyfriend got a cancer diagnosis a few weeks ago... I hear this song every day and dunno how to get the power to endure this.. to handle it.. He´s only 22 and got a 2yo child. 😭
Thank you for introducing us to new and diverse talent, artists we would not normally be exposed to in north america. Herbert certainly has a big fan base.
Herbert used to be popular in Germany and rightly so, because his songs are great. Especially "mensch". but now herbert is just an alcoholic who preaches to the germans about what to do. and stands on the stage and yells that he wants to dictate to society what it should look like. like I said: "mensch" is great and i used to appreciate him a lot, but he allowed himself far too much and has disappeared into insignificance musically in germany.

Grönemeyer is a fantastic live performer. So that video is certainly fun just listening to the music, his voice, and watching the connection between the artist and the audience. But the lyrics are the the most important part by far. "Mensch" is a song about the conditions that define human existence.
You have to hear der Weg bei Herbert, he wrote this song by losing his wife by breast cancer, a few day before he lost his brother byy leukemia, excus me for my bad english.
fun fact, Herbert Grönemeyer also was a succesful actor, before fully committung to his even more succesful music career. His best known role is that as a reporter on board of a German submarine in WW2 in "Das Boot".
