Vocal Coach REACTS to Roxanne (Cover) - AnnenMayKantereit & Milky Chance 

I once met Henning May, the bass with the raspy voice, by chance in Cologne and got talking to him. I took the opportunity to ask him how they had recorded this cover. (For myself, I had thought of two possible scenarios as to how they could have done it: they could have pre-recorded it on location, or in the studio with an appropriate reverb applied to it, possibly even with IR of the building in a convolution reverb plugin.) He confirmed that they had indeed recorded it on location. For the recording, they had recorded the voices, instruments and the bass amplifier very close up. They had also set up a stereo pair behind the singers to capture the natural reverb.

It's not prerecorded! The guy on the left, Henning May, is incredible. The whole band is. They picked that location for the reverb. And they sound great with Milky Chance! You should check out "Tom's Diner" that they did with another band called Giant Rooks. And also "I Can't Get You Out Of My Head" that they did with Parcels.

FYI - this is not prerecorded. The building is used as an acoustic amplifier. It works great, and this is why you hear a little echo. I love how AMK uses the surroundings when recording some live music videos.

So it’s not pre recorded guys can you not tell, the building they are standing in is helping to carry there voices, but they have the most body melting sound, love them so much

The covers AnnenMayKantereit do and many of the videos for their own songs are live recorded videos and I really don't know how you could not hear the characteristics of the location in the recording - the wight echo from the voices and the flat harsh sounds of the of the instruments with much less echo or hall. Other great examples are all their "proberaumsessions" or the cover "Can't get you out of my head" with parcels.

Annenmaykantereit starts with street music, so they know, how to use the accustic of their surrounding like the echo of this building site and are able to sing very loud but still with a good sounding voice. So, I think, that's live!

Love AMK! And Milky Chance, for that matter. This is such a great collaboration.

AnnenMayKantereit do a lot of features and covers with interesting bands, my personal favorite is their cover of can't get you outta my head featuring the parcels. AMK formed as street performers during their schooltime, so they are used to improv and use the qualities of their enviroment which really adds to their music. Edit: Many poeple don't remember Milky Chance but he had a kind of a big radio hit with "stolen dance" in the US and Europe in 2013.

As far as Annen May Kantereit goes, you should listen to their "Sometimes I like to lie". The vocal performance on that one blew me away!

One chocolate is really good. The other chocolate is really good too. Both at the same time is next level good. I could listen to either guy sing this song solo and be very happy about it. But those harmonies are bananas.

You can hear instruments becoming louder when the camera is coming closer to it. I am pretty sure it wouldn't make much sense to manipulate it afterwards to make it just sound like live recorded.

I don't think they prerecorded. Because they have that space dynamic of there being a large space behind them. They make use of it in the recording. I even get that vibe similar to some of the late 60's bands live recordings.

Lookin forward to the deep dive on AnnenMaiKantereit. Liked how he kept quiet at the beginning, like: yeah, wait for the 2. guys voice XD Every few months i check if there are new reactions to some of my fav. artists/songs. Gotta say, your reaction was a nice watch with a great vibe and also knowledge of the matter. For me easy one of my fav. first reactions to them :D The focus on the singing given(as most of the time with his voice in a song) i want to point out the harmonica and how the dude playin it matched the 2 voices in his solo. Starting very rough and deeper like Henning transitioning to a higher and cleaner pitch to match the guy from Milky Chance(sry for forgetting his name) At last, a few songs from AnnenMaiKantereit, i would say are reaction worthy: Cant get you out of my head Toms Diner Ich geh heut nicht mehr tanzen(Proberaum) Sometimes i like to lie Made me believe(Cardinal Sessions)

That sound is not prerecorded or something. They chose that building to have that hall effect acoustic with all the echoes.

Two big no's. Once because Tom Waits can sing, of course. You just have to listen to him carefully and interpret his alcohol- and cigarette-tanned voice correctly. And secondly because this is actually a live recording. You can notice it from the echo created by the corridor where the singers were standing in.

No! This is NOT pre recorded! I have listened to this a hundred times at least with headphones and in my car...

Started listening to AMK about a year ago in the music business for decades this is a unique sound never heard before. Hope they dont bastardise their sound for greater sucess I know this has to end but enjoy their time friendship and solidarity with their home fans .
