I fully did not appreciate how great these jets were when the RAF and Royal Navy flew them all the time in UK skies.
Catching the Spanish and Italian Navy Harriers flying in the UK today was truly epic. I think it's fair to say that these jet put a smile on a lot of people's faces at RIAT today.
Thanks so much to the Spanish and Italian Navy for sending these jets to RIAT this year. Absolutely ace 😎

It really is. I remember seeing a kid at an airshow years ago who could not believe a fast jet STOPPED in the sky in front of him. He simply couldn't get over it. I still feel like that kid when I see the Harrier come into the hover. Magic 😎

The Harrier is a true legend in the history of aviation. The first VTOL fighter, and by far the most successful. This is something the Brits should really be proud of.
@UKAviationMovies
@UKAviationMovies Год назад
Thanks for the comment Jacob. It’s a great fighter. We retired them from the Navy and Air Force way too soon I think 😔
@jacobzimmermann59
@jacobzimmermann59 Год назад
@@UKAviationMovies I don't know the reasons why they were retired. Maybe they became too costly to maintain and operate, or maybe their slow speed and limited range is considered too much of a problem, or maybe now that the UK has a skijump aircraft carrier there is much less need for VTOL. It's sad, because this was really one of the most iconic military aircraft anywhere in the world. When I was a little boy I had the chance to visit the Paris Airshow with my parents. I will always remember the moment we arrived there, just as a Harrier was flying its display. It was hovering there, stationary up in the air and the 8 years old me was stunned, thinking wait a minute, this shouldn't be possible ;)
@UKAviationMovies
@UKAviationMovies 11 месяцев назад
@@jacobzimmermann59 You're right. I think it was a combination of those factors. The F-35 is way more capable, but the transition from Harrier and Tornado to F-35 feels so rushed here in the UK. At least we have Typhoons to take up the slack a bit. I remember shows like that back in the 80s and 90s too. Seeing a fast jet flying backwards then running in at 100ft and 500 knots only a few minutes later 😎Good times!

The UK should be ashamed that the only way we can see such a beautiful display is to have the Spanish Navy do it. The fact that the UK has no Harriers in service or even in operation for display purposes is criminal. This one of the true exceptional frames ever to be developed and I still believe as other countries do that it still has a purpose to serve in modern aviation.

@lorenzcassidy3960
@lorenzcassidy3960 11 месяцев назад
@@bobcannell7603 Agreed. But which fighter is safe in such a hostile airspace anyway? I still think that the Harriers would be very useful if used in guerrilla tactics from just behind Ukrainian lines to minimise the threat of enemy's SAMs, like "hit and run" ground attacks with PGMs or just to deny those darn KA-25 easy shots with ATGMs. Harriers have the same APG-65 radar of the legacy Hornet and can shoot AMRAAMs: I reckon that a ruZZian KA52 pilot suddently painted by an APG-65 would get out of Dodge real quick instead of leisurely sit in hovering to plink at AFU tanks from a safe distance with ATGMs. Of course these are pure speculations on my part about a "what-if" scenario (I'm just a military aviation enthusiast and scale modeler) but I do believe that Ukraine would be way happier to have Harriers in its tool box than to have no Harriers at all.

@@anglonig1"but it's a complete British design."(sic) Incorrect. Bristol and Hawker received a lot of financial and technical assistance from the MWDP - primarily the United States - due to the fact that Duncan Sandys and the Mod refused to fund development of the Pegaus/Kestrel/Harrier. The UK also abandoned the Harrier II redesign from 1975-1981 returning only after McDonnell Douglas had completed the work and Thatcher had become Prime Minister as evidenced by the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in August 1981 in which the UK received 40% of the labor man hours for Harrier II airframes.
