Learn how to set up this easy but very useful tarp shelter. Just a standard square tarp is required. The entire tarp is used as is with no cutting, sewing or gluing required. This awesome shelter is especially useful with a fire in front. In this video I am using a 12 foot X 12 foot nylon Polyurethane coated waterproof tarp.

Hello my name is Lonnie and My wife is Connie.
Here at Far North Bushcraft And Survival you will learn about many long forgotten tricks and tips of the old time woodsmen. Not only will you learn about bushcraft / woodcraft but you will learn many things that will help you to survive in less than ideal "survival" situations as well. Come along and sit with me by the campfire as I delve into these subjects in a way that you can easily learn to then do yourself.
I will show you how to make shelters, gather food, use wild medicines as well as start fires with or without matches, lighters, ferro rods, etc

Almost like the baker's tent I used in Boy Scouts, back in the day when they were a good organization. It is also very similar to the classic Adirondack tarp shelter. Great stuff as always, keep up the good work!

I have used this configuration and its variations for years and love it. You can play with different attachment points for the ridgeline or poles. In foul weather I don't go all the way back to the halfway point but attach at the next grommet closer to the "porch" corner. It gives me a deeper shelter. I also angle the porch corner downward a little to shed water better.

Well explained Lonnie. I wonder how it could work with a rectangular tarp? May have to give that a try. Thanks for sharing
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching my friend. I do not think that this would work with a rectangular tarp unless teh extra end length was folded over to turn the rectangular tarp into a square tarp and tarp grippers of some sort on the new "edge" were used to replace the grommets on the old edge. Not only will the front "awning" be off centered if using a rectangular tarp but i believe that one sidewall edge would not reach the ground. Of course, one could use a slanted roof line to overcome that problem so that both wall edges would reach the ground properly. The front to back shelter depth distance may be different on both sides as well but I'm not sure on that. In other words, I do believe that a rectangular tarp could be made to work but it would definitely not be symmetrical unless it was artificially made into a square tarp beforehand. If you do happen to give this a go and document the results via video on your channel I would be interested to see what you end up with. Don't feel like you need to do it on my account but just saying if you happen to do it, it will be interesting to see what you end up with.

The simple square tarp certainly does provide endless shelter options. This one is very much like a bakers tent and I am sure with a fire out front and under the triangle roof traps a good amount of heat in the shelter itself.

Good setup. I'm thinking if you were two people, and the other person also had a tarp, you could set the two tarps up facing each other and pretty much have a nice enclosed ridge tent.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 5 лет назад
If one was to leave a gap between the two facing shelters such as two to three feet, one could then build a fire between the two under the gap and the fire should exhaust up through the overhead gap quite cleanly. The user may need to block one end or both. If both ends are covered then gaps should be left near the bottom of at least one end so that the fire can breathe well.

I have seen where Lars from Survival Russia carries a handful of nails wrapped in wire. If a person was anticipating putting up this shelter and already carries a Leatherman with them it seems to be a good idea to carry some screws in the woods to do the same as what you have here. I think I am going to start keeping a few screws in a small pill bottle in my pack for just such ideas.
