Wow! A 21st century version of a shepherd's staff I saw when I was a kid. It was amazing! It had most of those things and it even had a flask and a shepherd's clock, a kind of ring-inside-a wheel sundial that not only told the time of day, but also the day and month. And could be used as a fishing pole, spear, or shepherd's slingshot. Those were very personalized by the user. Most shepherd's staffs were just a stick. Edit: I would replace the foam grip with leather boot laces and wrap the sections in paracord. You could probably get 200 feet or so on there and it wouldn't affect anything.

Yes that smaller size paracord makes a really good hand cushion and you could get quite a bit of it if you went the full length of the stick. I use leather straps on my knife handles. But I have an old axe handle I wrapped in paracord. I didn't think it was worth my leather. But it really turned out to be pretty comfortable

Jim, a good addition that would fit inside could be an oven roasting bag. You can collect a large amount of water and the boil it suspended over a fire.
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 2 года назад
Yes, that's a good idea. Thanks for watching.
@Ram-1231
@Ram-1231 2 года назад
You don't need to suspend. I've thrown water bottles right in the fire and on coals. The trick is simply to have almost no air in anything plastic for direct fire. Any sections that have remaining air will melt at a temperature a bit above the normal melting point of said plastic. However, I don't boil water for purification but rather for coffee or ramen, rice, etc. Thankfully, I've never had to purify water..... yet

@@WayPointSurvival nah you want adequate protection from bears. You're getting a firearm and bear mace. Not some flimsy hollowed metal shaft. Maybe it'll work on snakes or could spear a fish however I wouldn't trust it with my life especially against bears or cougars.

My great grandfather, and former neighbor, both have passed on now, used walking sticks while walking. It helped them with balance and helped with things like snakes. In their day in eastern Kentucky, there was not all these paved roadways and good hiking trails like we see today. They spent much time in the great outdoors working,gardening, gathering firewood, overseeing their properties and etc. A good sturdy wooden stick to aid walking was much desired by some. Because of that, I'm a believer in having a good walking stick for balance and defense. Thanks for sharing.
@WayPointSurvival

Oh yeah my grandmother was the same way. She hated snakes and she always carried a stick to whack at a bush or pin down a snake whenever I go walking I use a walking stick instead of my cane. From what I heard everybody commonly carried a walking stick way back in the days

You know, for years I assumed trekking poles were ridiculous, and a waste of time, and then I used them, and realized there's a reason why 99% of thruhikers use trekking poles. Staff, poles, they really are a smart investment. Gigging isn't required to catch frogs, just an FYI guys. As a kid we'd just blind them with flashlights, and you can literally walk up, and grab them with your hands. I promise using smaller hooks works infinitely better than the larger ones.Theres a ton of information on as to why, and I can give a litany of reasons, even for catching standard sized trout. Wow, $300... I mean, that's the price of a Frost River pack, several pairs of Fjallravens, a custom made Wool Anorak, etc. Idk at that price.

Hello James how are you? I had seen them years ago, but I already had a custom staff made out of a grape vine with my name birth date and other engravings on it. Every year it gets straighter and longer as it unwinds. I think I may attach a threaded metal end that I can use for a fog gig or spear point but for right now it helps me go through rough terrain. I have used it to hold up a tarp in a plow point and a roll up stick on a super shelter and at one time I had a compass that was tied to the 5/50 cord I had on the handle for a grip but it stopped working and I removed it from the grip. It is not a versatile as the Crawford Survival Staff is. It is special to me it was a gift from my daughter. She gave it to me because she knew how much I liked the outdoors and I was recovering from having the swine flu and needed help with walking at the time.

If I'm out anywhere that bear are a serious concern, I won't be leaving it up to a knife-on-a-stick to protect me. Bear spray and a high-caliber firearm. Any bear aggressive enough to make that thing useful would only become *more* dangerous if you poked it with that thing. You could maybe sell it as being useful for smaller critters (but you already have the spear/gig), but anything you would need to actually defend yourself against deserves a more serious tool.

$900.00 I a lot of cake for a walking stick but it is the type of stick that I’m looking for. I want it to have a long strongly supported spike I can put on the front for sticking yotes with a bit of distance and would also like to be able to change the contents of any storage compartment. I’d rather have 20 strike any wear waterproof matches than a small ferro rod. Depending on where and when I’m going I might not want any fishing stuff and all snare line or whatever. I’m assuming you can easily remove sections for a shorter walking so thats cool. I wonder how strong the staff is as well. Can you wind up and power down with enough force to really crack a skull. I think I might try it out but I can buy a new Remington R1 Enhanced in .45 with 10 rd Mag- pull mags for same $900.00. I’m sure a wooden walking stick and a .45 would make a fine choice together but without a fire starter etc. i always carry something but just taking a short walk with my Brittany a couple of weeks ago and had the yotes at 30 yards barking and yipping and I didn’t have a stout stick or a firearm with me but I have been looking to choke the life out of one but three might suck but I figure the first two were running away but who knows I guess. I do like the stick in this video.

Carrying a condom in a survival kit is often overlooked. I think it's a 2.5L it can carry. Also I remember being told if you boil one for an hour or more, you can climb inside of it. Or even use it as a latrine? Maybe do a video on it, test the theory lol? Probably 101 survival uses for a condom. Also sterile. All the best bud.

That's really cool.. but the only thing I don't like about it is the spear part.. in 2 parts.. 1st.. if you have the spear on it.. you don't have the wrist rope so if someone grabs it,it can be taken away easier... 2nd.. in some places a fixed blade over 4'' isn't legal to carry.. But other than that. Really cool

James, I watched a video of yours the other day where you compared a new wood stove from a company that included your suggestions, to their older stove. I didn’t catch the company name, and now I can’t find that video again. What was the brand name of that stove? Thank you.
@WayPointSurvival

The name of the stove is Simple Theory Gear. Unfortunately, they went out of business during the pandemic. However, I have their permission to bring it back to the market but we've ran into some holdups which are mostly financial to getting it back into production.

I'd certainly like to see the fish setup spear fish a couple dozen fish or frogs and the other spear set up against a side of pig or deer for a couple dozen thrusts... I'd also like to see what happens when you attempt to bend it or perhaps put your full weight on it while it's between points at each end.. like doing 20 pullups with it.. I've had so many hollow items designed for the outdoors that are just trash. They seems 30 but when you put them to real use not just walking with them, they fail.

I carry 2 stainless steel 316 series crutches I designed and hand made with a blacksmith for use in a martial arts context because I snapped 4 pair of commonly available ones in the dojo working out on heavy bags!😂 THIS gives me a load of ideas, fire kit, I would use Spider Wire as suggested by William Collins because of its strength and other features. An appropriate thin neck knife should be easy to find or have made , 1/2 by 6 Ferro with striker, tinder tabs, even the Exotic Nano spark will fit nicely , Gorilla Tape, heck brother , even survival cord 550 or up to 1000 pound. I sized the haft of the crutch to fit a standard jumbo crutch tip . Its Schedule 40 316 pipe. Very nice staff. I don't have $1000 bucks but I can sure load what I do have to the gills. Thanks James!

It looks interesting enough I don't know if I would waste money on it how do you say that's a pretty big investment. I have a walking stick that has a y Branch at the end of it. I can put a small Shovelhead on the top as a shovel or on the side as a spade. I also have a knife with a hollow handle that attaches pretty easy and of course I have a hole in it that will fit the shovel in the knife so it can also have a spear tip on the end or on the side. I imagine it would work like a sickle but I must confess I've never used it like that. I put a rubber tip on the bottom. I thought about making it where I can attach a slingshot scrap between the Y Branch but it would be kind of a sideways and I don't think we would be good to aim. But I thought about making one that would be on the top of a staff. It would be easy to make it where it would shoot arrows or darts, or the traditional Rock I always carry around a couple of fire sources anyway. And a lot more stuff than that. If I was going to have the staff with me I would have a survival pouch or something anyway. I do like the knife and the Frog gig that's a frog gig is so easy to make yourself at the location. But that thin blade would really penetrate and make anything think twice if it was bothering you.

I'm not sure why you disagree with the statement.Having a pointed stick or spear is one of the oldest ways to keep dangerous animals at bay and has been used for thousands of years. Is it ideal against a bear? Of course not, I'd rather have a 44 magnum. However, this is much better than facing a dangerous animal empty handed. Thank you for watching.
