We are going old school. This video is a short show and tell of me firing up my grandfather's old Optimus 8R camp stove. I think this model was from the 1960's ish, but I could be wrong. This thing is cool, er I mean hot. Watch the video to see if I burn down my garage. And as always thank you for watching.

I have 4. I keep buying them off ebay, recondition, then resell. And use the one I inherited from Dad.

Right on! , that's the way to go. I got this one from my Grandfather after he passed, The older stuff is tried and true and still works great. I love my stove, and for some reason I think it makes my coffee tastes better when I go camping. I'm on the look out for a Coleman 425 gas stove to use instead of lugging around propane for my current set up. Going to be a great camping season this year. Take care man.

I purchased my example of this stove more than 40 years ago. It was in used condition - but still works even in below freezing temps. The "regulator knob" on these earlier Optimus 8R stoves was much nicer than the all-metal regulator key that came with the later stoves. Take note of the doughnut shaped cup at the very bottom of the burner, which is referred to in the instruction manual as the "spirit well". I keep an eye dropper in my stove for adding about 1 ml of fuel to the well prior to preheating the burner assembly. Methanol is a better alternative for preheating the burner assembly,. It burns much cleaner.

Andrew! This is great information thank you. I'll try it out on my next trip I love this stove, there is something about using the older tried and true equipment. I like to think about all the trips it's been and things its cooked over the years. Great to hear from you, and have a great day.

You use Meths (denatured alcohol) to preheat it in the bowl underneath burner bell.

@@dischoutdoors surprised no one else has mentioned it to be honest. A lot less messy. Wait till it burns out then turn the burner on, it’ll fire right up without all that coughing and spluttering and flames.

Awesome bit of gear...imagine trying to get this sorted out in the middle of the Swedish mountains when your fingers are cold! People were harder back in the day.

Agree, That was my Grandpa's stove, he was part of the "greatest generation" WWII era guys. It's amazing what they accomplished back then with the gear they had. I really dig the old stuff; the craftsmanship is top notch.

Wally is big ol mix breed. good ol mutt. I did his DNA and it came back with about 18 breeds in his woodpile. The stand outs to me are Great Pyrenees, (he's big 100lbs) Australian cattle dog (his colors) and Huskey (his coat and tail.) His parents were working dogs on a sheep ranch near where i live. He is 4 years old. I couldn't ask for a better dog. I'm lucky to have him. Thanks for the question. Have a great day.

@@dischoutdoors thanks. I was 60 in my bio picture I have one original 00 optimus. They have a kind of magic. I just keep it well maintained and actually use to make a meal and coffee occasionally. The heat is good enough for steaks with a cast iron pan. Little gems of things

@@peetsnort couldn't agree more, I love using mine for my coffee pot. It sounds like a little steam train.

You need to fill the very low pan below the bell
