I saw this episode of The Smothers Brothers the first time it aired. Awesome. The Who were in the top tier of rock bands with the Beatles and the Stones, and their destruction of equipment was legendary.
Along with the Beatles, and the Stones, The Who were the leaders of the British invasion on the 60s, they've got a lot of great music for you to check into. And Roger Daltrey is still too cool for school.
I used to watch the Smothers Brothers Show all the time and remember this performance . Tommy Smothers was a real hippie for the time even he looked clean cut. He took many LSD trips with the Guru of the acid age Timothy Leary. There used to be a poster of Leary and Tommy in a bed with the covers pulled up to their necks Grinning and laughing tripping their balls off OH how i wish for the old days LOL
The Destruction of instruments on stage was something that the Who was Famous for doing and this particular video was also a notable incident the band was known for and that is the Drummer, Keith Moon, he had set (what was supposed to be a small charge) Very big charge of explosive in his Bass drum for the end of the song, unfortunately, Pete Townshend was standing a bit closer than planned and got not only an Earful (later rumours that this resulted in his hearing loss) but a Hair full and thought his hair was on fire LOL. Keith Moon aka "Moon the Loon" was known as a crazy prankster and throughout his tenure, had pulled off some outlandish stunts in his time!
With the explosion at the end, Pete Townshend’s hair got singed and he went temporarily deaf. And Keith Moon was saying “ow” because shrapnel from a cymbal went in his arm
The Who were at their best in the 70's. "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Baba O'Riley", "Love Reign O'er Me" (especially if you like Roger Daltrey's voice!) and "The Real Me" are all must do songs.
Playing the cow palace in San Francisco, Keith Moon collapse on his drum kit after taking a dose of tranquilizers and was dragged off the stage by his legs. The band played the rest of the show with a fan. They were always pissed off but their performances are some of best
They weren't actually playing here. The audio was the studio version. The drummer used too much powder for the explosion and its claimed that Pete suffered some long term hearing loss. Check out Young Man blues live or the studio version of Love Reign O'er Me.
Actually, the entire track was recut just for this particular program. Only the vocals went live for both songs The Who did on the show. ("I Can See For Miles" being the first of the two songs.)
I remember watching that on our black and white TV back in the '60s. The Smothers Brothers courageously broadcast live. I had never heard anything like this. I was transfixed, and didn't realize until the song was over that my face was about two feet from the TV screen. I was gobsmacked well before they began to demolish their instruments. The way Pete Townshend tells it, The Who was playing a downstairs club with a low ceiling. Leaping about, as was his custom, Pete smashed the neck of his guitar on the ceiling, breaking it. He loved that guitar, and was pissed off that the audience didn't seem to care. A wild man when on stage, Pete decided on the spot that he would make them care, and proceeded to destroy the guitar. It became a trap for the band because, no matter how awesome the show was, fans would go away disappointed if they didn't smash their instruments. My Generation also generated the infamous line, " I hope I die before I get old," something else Pete would have to live with as he hit his 40s, 50s, 60s, etc.
In 1978, 11 years after this incident, I saw these guys in St Paul, MN. We were all 12 years old, and snuck in. There were a group of “Bikers” sitting behind us who were really nice, and let us smoke their weed with them. It has been 43 years, and I remember that concert like it was yesterday!❤️. The WHO were/are, UNREAL!👍👍👍🔥🎸🧨❤️❤️❤️ (The encore was “Baba O’Riley”)👍🤩🥳❤️
I think you would enjoy "5:15" from Top of the Pops in 73 , or "Long Live Rock " from BBC 73. Both are videos that I've never seen anybody react to..As well as "Pinball Wizard" from the Tom Jones show . You could maybe try "See, Me, Feel Me/ Listening to You, from a Woodstock video..
Keith Moon unbeknownst to the rest of the band or the tv show, packed dynamite in his kick drum. Pete Townshend suffered permanent hearing loss, had his hair burned, members of the band caught shrapnel from ghe cymbals, and Actress Bette Davis who was bokked on the show, fainted backstage.... Keith Moon was the greatest Rock Star of all time.
Equipment destruction was kind of their Thing for a while - but that explosion was bigger than Keith intended and helped do permanent damage to Pete's hearing. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey both had successful solo careers and have recorded new Who material in the last decade; Keith Moon and John Entwistle are no longer with us. (Keith never met restraint in his life, and the drugs took a bit longer to catch up to John.) "Who Are You," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Baba O'Riley" and I believe "I Can See for Miles" were all used as theme tunes for various parts of the CSI franchise. You can't go wrong with anything from Who's Next or Quadrophenia.
Quite a few things from the who: Baba O'Riley, The Acid Queen (With Tina Turner), 5:15, I Can See For Miles, Boris The Spider, Call Me Lightning, A Legal Matter, I Can't Explain, Pictures Of Lilly, Substitute, The Good's Gone, Who Are You, Won't Get Fooled Again, Young Man's Blues (Live Isle Of Wight), Pinball Wizard (With Elton John), And a whole lot more.
"The Kids Are Alright" fan movie ... Especially the version of "Who are You", and "A Quick One (While Hes Away" from The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus special. Oh, and them trying to play "Barbara Ann" by The Beach Boys (Moon was a huge fan).
Groundbreaking band. Pete Townsend the guitarist is one of the best songwriters of the pop music generation. You should definitely dig deeper into the Who's catalogue.
I'll tell you what. You can go down a huge Who rabbit hole. So many things. Peter (the guitarist) played a big part in the development of the Marshal Amp. Then, you get to Keith (the drummer) and he was an entirely different breed.
Shelly Winters and Mickey Rooney were watching fro back stage, and according to Roger, Shelly fainted when Keith’s drums exploded and Mickey caught her while yelling Yeah,…more ,…more,….too funny,….
You will like the Who, they have many hits that I'm sure you will remember once you hear them. You should react to 'Behind Blue Eyes' with your wife...Beautiful song by them.
You should definitely do The Who playing A Quick One on The Rolling Stones’ Rock &Roll Music Circus. One of the best rock performances ever filmed.....
Pete - LUNDUN. Yep a bunch of smart arses. Keith was renowned for wrecking Hotel rooms, one time he turned the room upside down and fixed everything to the ceiling, bed ,table, chairs, carpet, the whole room was on the ceiling.
Actually they weren't being assholes, they were just having fun, some people would get the names of those in the Who confused and this was a little poke at that and having fun with it. Great reaction video.. I want MY GENERATION back not all this bullshit that's doing on today!
T, also good to see you getting into The Who. Tremendous rock band, and next to Zeppelin, my 2nd favorite band. Check out this "See Me, Feel Me" classic from the original Woodstock. Awesome creshendo from slow to fast. This was said to have been played in the wee hours of the night, and as you'll hear at the end of the song, the audience "awoke" with a raucous cheer, as The Who was said to be arguably the best performance at Woodstock. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m7AHblQ3_oM.html
My Generation: why don't you all fffffffffade away. Attitude for days. I heard a figure who lived these times say the stuttering was a bit of in-joke reference to the vocal stammerings of being on speed, which the Mods were known for. Yeah, an infamous performance I suppose for Keith putting an extra dose of gunpowder in his kit for the finale, permanently damaging Pete's hearing in one ear, and also sending a shard through his arm. You can see Keith grasp his bicep as he makes off the stage.
I think they took the whole station off air for a few minutes with that explosion Keith detonated in his drumkit. I think Keith caught some shrapnel - presumably not a big bit, and he blew out Townshend's eardrum.
Ok, if you’re reacting to The Who, it’s gotta be a live performance. I would HIGHLY recommend “Who Are You” which was filmed while they were in the studio, and you really get a glimpse of the type of relationship they had with each other...lots of great musicianship as well as goofing off. Keith Moon or “Moon the Loon” was one in a bajillion. They modeled “Animal” from the Muppets after him. Please check this gem out...you won’t be sorry!
Moon plied the pyro guy with brandy and he loaded the drums with way more explosive powder than originally intended, the end of the song was supposed to be little more than a camera flash going off. Bear in mind that the rest of the band had no idea what was going to happen, the resulting explosion set light to Petes hair and left Moon with bits of cymbal stuck in his arms Also Bettie Davis was watching from the wings and fainted into Mickey Roonies arms. ,!!
when i first seen thisji was like they not from earth!!!!! how he play bass 4 fingers, then the lead guitar then the drummer and then the singer what they was doing very hard to do.
They were known for destroying their equipment. They actually were in the red, not earning enough to replace their equipment. Pete admits to stealing guitars, since he couldn’t afford to buy them.
Keith Moon fully deserved his lunatic reputation. There are great scenes of him dressed as a nun in Frank Zappa's 200 Motels. Keith Moon's version of "When I'm 64" from the Beatles cover album "All This and World War Too" is a great song.
To understand the dynamics within the who, here is a story. Around 1973 or so, the band was going to meet with the new executive at the record label. Apparently, the singer Roger Daltry was complaining about it. Finally, the guitarist Pete Townshend told Daltry to "shut the fuck up" and then he attempted to knock Daltry over the head with his guitar. Daltry dodged the blow and then cold cocked Townshed, knocking him out as the record executive entered the room. The executive was aghast and asked if it always like this between those two. Drummer Keith Moon quipped, "No, this is a good day for them." The bassist John Entwhistle, the quiet one, was probably in a corner guarding his bass.
You just heard one of the best rock drummers (heavily influenced Neil Peart). The Who are great. Pete Townsend (guitar) wrote a Rock Opera Called 'Tommy', check it out. Many great albums. Saw them live 5 times.
Cool song! Watch it with the video. It's a favorite of mine. Yeah, The Who classic destruction of the instruments and stage. Why? I don't know, for effect I suppose.
THE WHO - Creators of MANY great hits, but my favorite is the Live at Leeds version of this song. It's 15 minutes long and jumps from one bangin' melody after another. Like a runaway freight train, it keeps on comin'.
COME ON ''T''....THE WHO.....THE FIRST SUPERSTARS FROM THE SIXTY'S ARE THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES AND THE WHO......THE WHO IS A SUPER GROUP....STARTING TO WANE ABOUT 5 YEARS AFTER KEITH DIED ....THEN AGAIN THE STONES NEVER WERE MUCH AROUND THAT TIME AS WELL !!!!....ROGER IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGERS OF ALL TIME....PETE IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGWRITERS OF ALL TIME AND JOHN , CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST BASSISTS EVER AS WELL AS KEITH BEING ONE OF THE BEST DRUMMERS EVER......THE WHO IS GEDDY, ALEX AND NEIL'S BIGGEST INFLUENCES...SERIOUSLY !!!
Keith put to much pyro into his bass drum not knowing how much he putin. When it blew up a piece of metal shrapnel went into his arm. Notice he says OW!
please react to another great song of the who called "baby don't you do it" (deluxe version) from the album Who's Next, believe me, you are gonna get crazy man!!!
as the rest of your listeners will tell you this is the tip of the iceberg with the who. over the next 4-10 years after this they become one of the best bands in the world. you will see. this is a rabbit hole. ranking may not matter but rolling stone mag has roger waters and pete townsend top 5 front men and guitarist and keith moon top 3 drummers. just a you wait in see.
This is the same band that has its song as an intro to the show, CSI. I don't know if you ever watched the show CSI but the intro to the show is the song Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who. One of the best parts of this video Tommy Smothers introduces Keith as the one with the sloppy drums which Keith took offense to saying to Tommy that his friends called him Keith but Tommy can call him John. Keith was throwing some major shade at Tommy for insinuating that Keith plays sloppy drums. That was an awesome passive-aggressive comment by Keith because I think deep down inside Keith wanted to kick his ass for insinuating that he plays sloppy drums. I bet after the set Keith had some very Choice words for Tommy. Keith was known to be a very hard partier. Another little fun fact that you might not know is that the Animal Muppet that plays the drums was taken from Keith Moon. The creators of The Muppets basically made Keith Moon into a muppet
