Yeah when that happened it freaked out a lot of suits or squares of the day. The Smothers Brothers actuality had their "variety show" canceled because they spoke out against the Vietnam War. They were warned by the networks to stay at an arms length of "the hippy movement" but the Brothers Smothers 😏 refused and got their careers tanked as well.

In their early years The Who destroyed their instruments. It became a thing until it got too expensive and people began to expect that they destroy their instruments. This performance is from the Smothers Brothers tv show, probably around 1967 or 68. It looks like it's taken from the documentary, "The kids Are Alright," which I saw many decades ago in the movie theater. The reason why the explosion is so intense is that Kieth Moon, ever the jokester, ordered a stage hand to put double the amount of gunpowder near his drum kit. Surprised the heck out of everyone when it went off.

Great reaction to this video Haze! The Who were well known for tearing things up and Pete Townshend for smashing up some pretty nice guitars. This old clip from the Smothers Brothers is hilarious. Their comedy show was a family oriented program and I remember seeing this on TV when I was just a kid. My mother was outraged and wrote to the TV station to complain! Me and my young brother were in stitches laughing so hard. Of course we thought it was great, but our parents were just pissed off that the Smothers Brothers would allow such a thing on their show. In the early years of The Who, which this video is, The Who used to destroy their instruments. Their stage act was insane back in those days. This brings up the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Jimi Hendrix and The Who were in the lineup that evening. No act wanted to follow Jimi or The Who for that matter. Pete Townshend of The Who insisted on going on stage before Jimi. The Who blew up the stage as usual. Jimi decided he had to do something equally dramatic (he didn't have to but that's another story). So Jimi put lighter fluid on his precious guitar at the close of his act and set it on fire. Video of this exists for you Who and Hendrix fans.
@georgeprice4212
@georgeprice4212 Год назад
What people seem to forget about is that there was a band between The Who and Hendrix, who were playing WHILE the crew was still cleaning up the stage from The Who’s onslaught: The Grateful Dead. Bob Weir said that he was stepping on chunks of Pete’s guitar during their set!

lol you know what's really funny.. the tv show had now clue this was gonna happen... Not even the band knew about the final bomb that Keith Moon sets off. as soon as that final cherry bomb goes off, you can see Pete Townsend (the guitarist) grabbing his ear. That's because he had no clue it would happen and it completely burst his ear drum and damaged the hearing in his left ear for life. Even he had a sense of humor about it though. That was the spirit of the band.

A legendary TV performance, breaking all the rules and sending up the host in the process. The explosive device in Keith's bass drum was less than impressive during the initial rehearsal, so he apparently bribed a stagehand (with a $20 bill, and a nip of whiskey) to *really* load it up. When he set it off, the thing went off like a bomb...it blew the bass drum out completely, Pete caught the full brunt of it (the side of his hair was burned, and his subsequent hearing loss stemmed from this incident), and part of a cymbal sliced its way across Keith's arm (you can see him grab his arm in pain at 5:41). People in the audience has pieces of bass-drum heads on them.

As mentioned by another commenter , the Smothers Brothers comedy duo looked square but were important opponents of Nixon's bloody war . A tight knit group of entertainers spoke out and sometimes gave money to struggling causes of the time . Miriam Makeba from South Africa , Harry Belafonte ( Dayo song ) Joan Baez , Sammy Davis of Vegas fame , Adam Clayton Powell the politician , and Peter Paul and Mary ( Puff the Magic Dragon ) all were brave people in a dark time . So this video clip is a time capsule of a funny show that was hated by the Trumpers of that era .

Pete Townsend first did it during a performance because he was really pissed about something going wrong with his guitar, and the crowd went wild, and after that they were expected to do the destruction thing. But to me it looks silly being planned like that. Keith Moon is a wild drummer. He really was the best. He was also the biggest party animal in the world, legendary drinking and drug fueled maniac. Don't know if this was mentioned but..... This is the performance when Pete Townshend claims his sense of hearing took the worse hit of his professional career. Permanently losing some hearing in his left ear. You see, unbeknownst too Keith Moon and the rest of the guys, a stage hand already placed gunpowder and cherry bombs strategically underneath Keiths drum kit for a scheduled, "BANG", to conclude the song. With no one looking, Keith added more gunpowder and cherry bombs before the show. Now his drum kit was equipped with TEN TIMES the amount of explosives he usually used on stage without him or anyone knowing this fact. You can see Pete patting down his head after the explosion because he thought his hair caught fire. Keith Moon was a little shocked himself at the final result. He cut his forearm but was very, very, VERY happy at the end result. The next scheduled guest on the Smothers Brothers Show that evening was the movie screen legend, Bette Davis. They needed smelling salts too revive her. Yuppers, ole Bette fainted when hearing THE BLAST. And in the words of Roger Daltrey, "Waves of shrapnel from the cymbols embedded into flesh, walls, speakers and the floor" Rock and Roll at its finest ladies and gentlemen. ("Shrapnel from the cymbols" 💥😂😂😂😂)

Destroying the equipment was a regular part of the act, especially during the 1960s. It was effective, but rather expensive. :)

It also started a long, honored tradition in rock 'n roll that continues (among some bands) to this very day.

If you want to see a very intense performance where The Who smashed their instruments you should check out the live version of 5:15 on The Top Of The Pops TV show from 1973. There's a long story behind what happened, but in summary there was a musicians strike in the UK. The BBC wanted to honor the musicians strike so they forced The Who to prerecord the music part of the song instead of playing it live. Half way through Pete thought "bleep this" and actually turned his guitar amps on and went into a great guitar solo. The BBC pulled the plug on his amps and Pete went ballistic...with Keith joining in on the mayhem. Forgot to mention, it's funny to still hear the guitar and drums playing in the background even after Pete and Keith destroyed their gear!

Keith put a little extra pyro in his drum, causing permanent hearing loss for Pete and a cut arm for Keith from a broken cymbal just then! And they were not really playing. You wanna see how badass they were, find some footage from the early 70's.....like Live at Leeds or Isle of Wight of them actually playing. They were a force to be reckoned with! This should be your next Who video, IMO, Young Man Blues live at Tanglewood. The Who were tighter than a frog's arsehole at this point in their career from so much traveling. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R1CJuzpuca4.html

First one is Octopus Garden, sung by Ringo and great guitar by George, second and my all time No.1 is Don´t let me down, check out the live on the roof version... Greetings from Germany, peace and love...
