Here's how a great skydive through the clouds with friends can turn bad really fast! Low pull, opening close to others, tension Knot on opening turns into line twist, cutaway low with no RSL... But I lived! Not the best situation for sure but you learn and move on!

Definitely not a low pull, if you freeze the last alti check he’s at 4500 ft. He definitely pulled at 3k. His track should have been longer for sure. RSL’s are a preference ( highly recommended but needs to be thoroughly understood when it will help and when to disconnect it). As far as crossing the runway and taking a down winder it appeared to be a poor spot from the get go.

@@arnassepetys6606 I'm from Germany and I had two cutaways. Both times the main was ok, but they were hanging in trees far away from the ground and so I had to call someone to climb up and bring it down. (Later I learned to climb trees and did the same for my skydiving friends). In my time as a jumper we did some walks through fields and woods for searching canopys and freebags. To catch the main midair is a real bad idea. I know one case where the jumper by the attempt to catch the canopy was entangled in the canopy and got killed thereby.

@MattJaskol
@MattJaskol 4 года назад
Paul Hutton Line twists under a high performance canopy diving to the ground is a lot different situation than your average line twist under a big square canopy flying straight. And this wasn’t just line twist, most likely something else going on like tension knots, note the one riser higher than the other. Also, I was at about just a few hundred jumps in this moment and now at over 1100 jumps the correct response would have been the same, to chop it. Please don’t ever try to pull or push your risers together in a situation like this. You check Alti and get out. ESPECIALLY in a high G spinning situation. More, Every tough guy thinks they won’t pass out but it happens. Further more the harder it starts to spin the harder is is the pull your Handle and have a clean chop.. Now, going back to AFF, IAD, etc, what do you think the correct decision is in this situation? Fly safe my friend!

Yeah, great question this was very early on in my skydiving career and there was just a lot going on. I had JUST paid for a reserve repack (100$) it was the first day of a long weekend event. My AAD (automatic activation device.) was just about exspired but as long as I didn’t have a reserve ride I would get another 6mo out of it but if I had a reserve ride (like I did) I’d need to by a new one (1000-1500$ new) the malfunction was packed by a packer and I had to down wind land it to make it to a safe spot and landed on my ass a bit hard. So that was part of all the frustration. All though I was alive it was an expensive jump essentially caused by another person who packed for me haha
@animationcycles7109
@animationcycles7109 3 года назад
So I keep asking a question, and no one answers. Maybe it's something you don't talk about? What makes the reserve a " definite" opening chute? Is it because it's smaller, and therefore your body mass, is more to the chutes..wing loading? Meaning each square inch is carrying more load, than a main chute? Because it's smaller, are there less length in the control lines? So it's harder to tangle up.( but does that also mean if they DO get crossed up, you are really fuckered? ) Can you in theory, carry 2 main chutes, and 1 reserve? I know it sounds weird, as I ride " dangerous" motorcycles, and not much redundancy on safety..but something REALLY freaks me out, about skydiving, and having just a single back up. I love watching the videos, but I have an unsettling fear, of a reserve failing. But I'm guess that's my fear, and just as in any other sport "trust your gear", and get over it..
@tylerp6375
@tylerp6375 3 года назад
I’m not a skydiver, but I believe the reserve has a lower wing loading and is much more conservatively designed. As well, a lot of the safety margin comes from the fact that the probability of a failure is small, and the probability of two is very very small (e.g. winning the lottery once vs on two successive draws). As well, the reserve needs to be packed by a licensed rigger, whereas you can pack your main if you desire.
@MattJaskol
@MattJaskol 3 года назад
So there’s many variables to your question it’s just not a simple answer that’s maybe why people haven’t answered it. The main parachute is made of a material meant to last many many years it’s also meant to pack quickly so that you can realistically jump multiple times per day but has a higher likelihood of having a malfunction but it is still usually the error of who packed it. A reserve parachute Hass to be packed by a specially licensed and trained parachute rigger. It’s also made of a different type of material and as meant to open up more symmetrically and reliably but the material does not last for as many years usually. It is traditional that you want your reserve parachute to be a little bit bigger than your main parachute but that is not always the case. Hope that answers some of your question

Hi! Let me answer some of your questions. Are you a jumper? 1st- This was 7yrs ago around 150 jumps (Now instructor and over 3k jumps) 2.- I didn’t pull “low” it was at intended opening although it was close to the hard deck (around 3k ft) 3. I did not open close to “others” just one other that tracked a little closer than you would like next to me. 4. I didn’t f*** around with handles, in-fact I ditched the reserve handle and only quickly secured the cutaway handle as it was dangling around. The reason for the anger was many at the time. I had just had the reserve re-packed for that weekend ($160) My AAD ($1200-1500) was going to be due to replace in 6mo OR if I had a reserve ride.. So, on the first Jump of the weekend the packer packed me a malfunction and that jump cost be $1500 so I was pissed lol. Hope that answers some questions

I had JUST had the reserve repacked before this jump $(100) my AAD was was almost out of service but was going to be good for that last repack for potentially the next 6mo before having to drop another 1+k on a new AAD and repack. Borrowed canopy that I’d have to replace if lost which happens often in this location. And so on...
