I just got back into playing after I retired and now have time to work on songs. I always loved the bass line in this tune. Thanks for the solo breakdown. Glad I found your channel. I was in several classic rock bands, Took a few years off from playing but got the urge to start playing again.

Dan....I'm an intermediate bass player still learning all I can. The question I have is, how do you know which major or minor scale pattern to use starting from the root note?
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Год назад
For playing songs or improvising? It’s all about context. Certain things translate better to certain shapes and patterns. Know any scale off your first (three note per string patterns) second, and fourth fingers and you’ll have most things covered. Not sure if that helps or raises more questions!

What a great lesson. I was learning this from ear and had it mostly sorted. But as usual, I'm not great at understanding why these notes are chosen. Your explanation of the intervals is very helpful. Love the sound of the 10th!

In the intro you play the main riff by "running" from the fifth, third and then first fret of the E. That's how I know it, but it is really tough for me to play it in time. Then in the actual video you play using the A string. Which is better? Thanks for the video!
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 3 года назад
Good spot! Honestly, if you can do both then that's 'better' as you have options and can do what you like (I didn't even realise I was doing that). However, using the A string is easier so probably better. There are many ways to play the same thing on bass so as long as it sounds good (and you're experiencing no pain), you can find your own way.

Hi Dan - This is an incredibly useful lesson. And congrats on your recent book, which I also consider a very useful and extraordinarily well-crafted work. Regarding playing along with the original song, I count 42 measures, after the Intro, and wonder whether you can advise on how to pick the right measure to play the bass solo - if I count ... a great deal of the pleasure of playing vanishes :). Thank you for this great video
@OnlineBassCourses

Thanks Giovannini! Firstly, let me apologize that I still haven't finished reorganizing the funk grooves you mentioned a while back... Lack of time! For this kind of thing I'd normally go by sections, so after the first guitar solo or a particular vocal line or something like that. Learn to count and feel sections like verse, chorus, bridge etc. Then you don't have to count absolutely everything. Hope that helps!

Morning Dan, thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening lesson again thank you. I have a quick question regarding the pentatonic shape that you refer to , what makes it apparent it was that particular pattern of the major pentatonic that fits? Is it just experience or is there something more obvious? Many thanks
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 3 года назад
Thanks very much! It's very obvious and scientific. Well, obvious once you know it. Once you can locate the root note, it's a case of applying minor or major pentatonic shapes (if you can't immediately hear whether it's major or minor). Then you play the shape based on the string you're on. Sounds tricky but it's not. I'll do a lesson on it soon...

Hey big fan of the channel! Was wondering if you could break down two of my fav song's bass lines? One is Devil in a New Dress by Kanye West and the original song that it samples is Will You Love Me Tomorrow by Smokey Robinson. The two bass lines sound similar but I was wondering if you could point out the subtle differences in the original recording and the Kanye version? Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the nice comment on my teaching; much appreciated. Tone is a very subjective thing and you're entitled to your opinion. I've been playing a little longer than you have (not that it matters) and earning a decent living as a full-time pro bassist with that lame tone :) Again, you're entitled to your opinion and maybe you're not a P bass fan (many aren't), but I'll keep going as is thanks! One thing I'm learning in this RU-vid game is that you can't please everyone and I'm certainly not trying to. All the best!
