Cindy's voice is incredibly emotional in this song. It always hit me like a semi truck and leaving me wanting for more Cindy's candy! Both the bass line and the guitar parts are played simultaneously by the guitarist.
The B's are my favourite band. That bass you're hearing is Kate slamming a low note on a keyboard. Ricky's sweet guitar sound comes from the fact that he completely removed the A & D strings. These guys were lightyears ahead of their time.
Cindy Wilson is one of my favorite top 3 female singers. Her Georgia accent is so cool! Her and Kate made Beautiful melody together. You can put All of todays female singers in a bucket and all together they wouldn't have the talent of these 2 women! The B-52s own the title *GREATEST PARTY BAD OF ALL TIME*
only the B-52's could take such sad lyrics and make it sound like a party song. the man she wants brought back is a drowning victim. she is asking the sea creatures to bring him back if she throws fish and candy out into the water for them to eat.
I have such a bad crush on that weird style! I think the song sounds like desperate heart break and I never thought party song but thats just me! By far the best song from them! I like dirty back roads but since I heard it was about butt sex thats all I hear and Im not into it! Only guy I know who isn't. Its for pooping! Sorry got derailed
In an interview with Songfacts, Cindy offered this explanation. "Or he was flushed down the toilet by the Ty-D-Bol Man." Either way, this is such a fantastic piece of art - lyrically, vocally, and by the fact that she's having so damned much fun singing and performing it.
You reacted to one of my all time favorite bands. They are SO much more than Love Shack. That dope bass by the way...there was no "bass" player in early B-52s. What you are hearing is the extremely talented and versatile Kate Pierson playing the bass on her keyboard with one hand while playing all the odd sounds that the B-52s are so well known for on the other. I think of course you HAVE to react to the official video for Rock Lobster because it is just such an iconic song and performance. It also gives you a small taste of what they are like live and live is where they shine. They are the ultimate party band. Went to see them many times back in the day and they never disappointed. Weird, quirky, but extremely tight musically. I also highly recommend the live version of Big Bird, Mesopotamia and June Bug. These ladies both have outrageous voices and their harmonies are very unique. Check out the official video for Roam as well.
Though the twanging bass was played on lead guitar, with the two top strings replaced with bass guitar strings. This came about, as he used to break the strings on a friend's guitar in high school and only had bass strings to replace them with. It's his signature sound.
"Quiche Lorraine," "Party Out Of Bounds," "Hero Worship," "Dirty Back Roads," "Mesopotamia," the list goes on, and that is just from the first two albums and the e.p. !
the bass is by Kate Pierson (on the right side in this video). It was a synth bass and she adds the fills on the bridge. Ricky's guitar riffs are super catchy. He used really unusual tunings, very unique sound.
MY girlfriend loves The B-52's and I didn't think much of them until we saw them Live and I had a great time without knowing their songs and saw how much fun they and their fans had. Then I found this song and I love it. It's probably top 5 of the best songs I've ever heard. We've seen them live a few times since and I'm always so excited to see them. Every performance is so much fun. They're retiring from live performances soon so if you like anything they do in the slightest, I recommend you go see them!
You my friend get it. Almost my identical reaction 41 years ago - this is why we loved them. Crazy-Great Surf Guitar and a bunch of feedback against solid rhythm section with toy piano and badass party attitude.
The is a deep cut, and great one. Thank you for helping to bring attention to a forgotten classic. Your commentary was adroit. and right on the money. Speaking of lost classics one that I’d love to see in a reaction is Urban Dance Squad’s “Deeper Shade if Soul” an early 90’s hip hop group with live instruments as well as a turntable.
I'll never forget the night I saw the B-52's open up for The Who in 1982! I graduated from high school in 1983 and the B-52's were the ultimate party band.
Wild Planet is a fucking dope album. I've only been listening to them for a couple of years but I was amazed they were the same band that did Love Shack. You should definitely check out the live tracks from 1980 at Capitol Theatre.
New Wave might be fun to delve into. A lot of weird and different stuff came out of this era. Talking Heads, DeVo, B52s, 45 Grave, Blondie, The Ramones, The Cramps... there were a lot of sounds and styles but it was all trying to be something new and weird. pre MTV New Wave is pretty fascinating.
I've only recently gotten into the early B-52s (first couple of albums), and this song is probably my favorite. Razor sharp but tense, the production-quality is unreal (like you said, sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday). And those glockenspiel bridges/breakdowns, goddamn. Also, I LOL'd with the "this is the same band that did 'Love Shack'?" comment
Men, I loved your way of doing this video. You know, I love this banda since the 80's an this is One their Best songs, thanks for your Review, keep doing this videos, specially from "The B52's", You are going to love it thouroughly
Once I heard and watched "Planet Claire" back in the day I was hooked. Still am 40 yrs later. Give me back my man, Mesopotamia, 52 girls......come on! Awesome. 👍🎶
You totally landed it. I watch all kinds of music videos and I consider this one of the best ever. You didn't even notice the dark dark lyrics. Good job.
I love this, .. I just discovered their song "Legal Tender".. AMAZING!!, Why haven't I ever heard before... it's so fun🤸🏼♀️💃🏼🎸🎶I've a new appreciation for the Bs for sure!!!
The band is from Athens, GA, home to the University of Georgia where they were students when the band was formed. Also from this little college town: R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Drive-by Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Azure Ray, Pylon, the Glands, Vigilantes of Love, Vic Chesnutt, Reptar, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Dead Confederate, John Barry, Ravenstone, Danger Mouse, Love Tractor, and so many more. Just an amazing little town that The NY Times said is the birthplace of indie music.
Hard to put them in a music genre. They were dubbed New Wave at some point though. Thanks, I wish more ppl would react to this song and Dirty Back Roads.
Felicitaciones. Para la agrupacion de b52.❤❤❤❤
The guitarist--Ricky--was the younger brother of Cindy, who sang this one. Well, Ricky died years ago and, as you adroitly observed, the drummer Keith switched from drums to guitar.
The B52s and Talking Heads were the really fun bands to see and inspiring to dance to and just whoop it up! Their big hits were Rock Lobster, Planet Claire, Love Shack, Roam. All great songs. I also loved Mesopotamia, and Throw That Beat in the Garbage Can!
B-52'S are one of the greatest party bands ever. I saw them in 2019, it may have looked like my grandparents were on stage. They might have moved a bit slower, but they had the same energy they had back in the day.
From 1980/81. Off their 2nd full album, "Wild Planet." This is my favorite song where Cindy takes the lead. My overall favorite from The B-52s? LAVA. That's one to review.
Cindy Wilson (singer) was the guitarist's sister. Unfortunately, he died of AIDS in 1985 (or 1986?). Keith Strickland (drummer) took over guitar after Ricky's death. The band is from Athens, GA and were friends with members of REM.
Saw them sing this live in concert in 1980. This single/album hadn't even been released yet I was like 'wtf! this rhythm is amazing' - also thinking ''Why the hell is she singing about fish?' lol Still one of my favourite B52 songs 40 years later. Love bands that can have different vocalists taking the lead and still smashing it out of the park.
Had forgotten just how wonderful this band was/is?!!. A fantastic funky/punky Goodtime Ppppparty band, if the B52s don't get you moving your Ass, then you've probably died a few days ago but your friends and family were too embarrassed to tell you!!!...
The bass is from Kate's organ and this song was actually written in '78, but on the 1980 album. They didn't have a true bass player until the 90's. I'm glad you chose this one, because the early hits usually steer into the great 'camp" style, but this one is a great cross blend.
There is a good case to be made that the B-52s are one of the all-time best US rock bands, up there with CCR and The Beach Boys. Even greater because they let women’s voices prevail in songs like this.
I love this B-52s song, especially Cindy's wonderful singing. (Did you notice she was barefoot. She usually is in the early videos.) Next, I suggest either "Dirty Back Roads" or "Private Idaho" or another Cindy lead vocal, "Dance This Mess Around" (the SNL live is great.)
I read somewhere a while back that one of the background noises is a belt buckle in a dryer. Not sure if it's true, but it certainly sounds like it could be. So many great songs, so hard to choose my fave, too many to fit on a 1 disc greatest hits collection.
First time I ever saw/heard them was on SNL singing DANCE THIS MESS AROUND,everything about the song dru me in especially STOP STOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE,BEFORE YOU BREAK MY HEART, then when Fred starts naming the songs( the shy tuna and aqua velva). Those 1st 2 albums❤❤❤. I was lucky enough to see them perform on the same show with another fabulous band Kid Creole and the coconuts.Love the B52s.
This is actually my favorite song from them. And I was into them when they first hit the New Wave scene when I was just a kid. This is their most straightforward passionate song and, as a result, it sounds timeless.
This was a song that jumped out at me from their debut. Her attitude with the vocals is so wonderfully bratty and defiant, she sings sweetly and then yells at you..GIVE ME.....GIVE ME BACK MY MAN!! I think Sinead O Conner must have been digging this, because she picked up some tonal similarities.
are you a musician? Not many people seem to note that the bass is a keyboard and played by Kate whilst simultaneously playing melodies and singing lead (on other songs) AND dancing. Must have been such hard work but this was one of the unique features of their sound - something I think they lost when they brought in regular musicians. Still great but just not as unique.
LOVE this band...the dynamics of their vocals: Each of the girls separate and then together, THEN add Fred's voice into the mix (not this song of course, but a lot of their other tunes)...incredible! Add that to their unique sound and you have something no one else can duplicate! A few other tunes to check out would be Rock lobster (of course), Planet Claire, Good Stuff, Hallucinating Pluto and Strobe Light. First time hearing this song, a solid groove but didn't seem to be as lively as some of their other great tracks, definitely enjoyable though! Now I'm telling ya, if you want to hear some kick ass guitar driven 80s music, check out Pat Travers Snortin' Whiskey ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MykD8zgHuy8.html
