I owe to tell you this. I passed my checkride yesterday and honestly felt pretty well prepared for the practical part thanks to you. I watched your video about briefing and did exactly how you teach it. It's almost like I could hear you say "well I am ready but are you?😄). Long story short the DPE told me that he loved all of my briefings. Thank you for all of these videos. I hope I get to fly with you some day and become a better and more proficient pilot.

@Noah 7S The place of birth was wrong on iacra so it took us literally 90 minutes on the phone with the faa to fix that. I felt so stupid that I has missed that. Then the beautifully vfr forecast day was mvfr all morning so my oral portion went from 10 am to noon. Ceiling was still at 2400 ft and the DPE asked what I wanted to do. I said it's a no go for me (my personal mins are 5 miles and 3000 ft Ceiling). I asked if we can go to lunch and see if it clears up. he loves that and said that was good adm etc etc. he likes safe pilots etc etc. we went to lunch and by 1:30 it was all clear. the practical part took about 1 hr 15 minutes. the forward slip to land was my last maneuver (I dreaded that because I had practiced that once only due to weather being so shitty for days). I was praying that I don't fail it on the last maneuver. ended up working out just fine. as soon as I landed and cleared the runway he congratulated me. phew what a relief.

Sadly, many tend to think, "oh that will never happen", and they tend to just skip over the unpleasantries and go on to enjoy just the fun stuff. Actually, going through the drills and the motions can and may just save your life and the lives of your passengers. As always, Jason, your finer points are solid gold for us all. Thanks a bunch!

Additionally how about an engine compartment fire and knowing which way to roll the aircraft for the turn to keep the flames as much away from you as possible? Thats something I add into the practice as well. Great video!

Number one item first if there is a fire. Shut off your fuel (simulated). Nothing worse than fanning flames with a fuel source while you’ve increased airflow during a rapid decent. Next turn off all electrical or pull all breakers (simulated). Then you can start you emergency decent.

Very useful video! I used to fly all the time but wasn't able to much over covid and have really fallen off since. It gets harder to get back into it the longer you go without

In a real cabin fire I wouldn't be worried about shock cooling; I'll take every degree of cooling I can get. But is it a concern when practicing those emergency descents?

I thought an aggressive slip would be part of engine fire or cabin fire procedure. Lose altitude fast but maybe it’s not enough speed to snuff out the flames. Thoughts?

So I need to decide, if I want to descent as fast as possible or have minimal speed at landing in an airplane with electrical flaps, since I can't change the flap setting once electrical power ist off

In an emergency you want a greater glide. So you won't be needing flaps. To slow your landing speed you will have to approach flatter and if needed slip down.

I don't own the aircraft I fly and one thing I don't understand is why anyone would put the fire extinguisher underneath the pilot's seat. There is no way I'm getting it out while in flight.

The high speed emergency dive have killed many. It can easily become over Vne and bent the airplane off, and could damage the engine cylinders with shock cooline. OR.. can get you into the clouds because higher speed needs a lot more room between clouds. A student of mine had to descend between 2 nearby clouds, he said if he used the non flaps method he could be dead by been inside the clouds, IFR at high speed in a steep turn. Most ancient airplanes didnt have flaps, But now all or most Airplanes have flaps to control airspeed.

Briefing passengers when there are no passengers is like flipping a fake landing gear switch when there is fixed gear. Training to do something dumb to waste time while the engine is running is dumb. Each checklist has a reason. If you're knowingly doing things that have no reason to be done, you are training you mind to treat more and more of your tasks as mindless checklists that mean nothing, which makes you worse at everything in life. You can't lie to your brain. So stop lying to yourself by doing the checklists that don't apply to a flight. Only do pertinent checklists. Just like staying on runway centerline in a severe crosswind is a bad idea. Stay on the upwind side of centerline to use the runway crown for better traction vs. centerline just for centerline sake. ' . .

Going through the list and making judgement calls on every item *wastes* Hobbs time. Doing everything on the checklist every time means it becomes second nature and it becomes a quick flow and you don't forget it. And releases your overtaxed mind for more important decision-making.
