Tamarind got its name from Arab people, when their traders used to do business with India long long ago, they used to take this back to their land and linked it so much that they have given the name "Tamar-E-Hind" meaning the "Dates of India"... Later Western country renamed it to Tamarind!!
You can add green chillies instead of red chillies. If you pound it in a mortar and pestle the texture will be different. If it is too sour, add brown or white sugar.
