Curious what your AWS EC2 Pricing would be to host a WordPress Blog in the Cloud with Amazon?
I've got you covered. I recently hosted a WordPress blog for an entire month using an AWS EC2 instance and this video will explain the cost of doing so. The AWS EC2 Pricing model is somewhat difficult to sort out using the AWS Calculator, in fact, it's pretty much useless unless you have all kinds of data to plug into it.
So take some of the guess work out of trying to determine your monthly cost with hosting a WordPress Blog, and let me help explain the AWS EC2 cost model.
As always, feel free to subscribe as I'll be posting more videos in the near future on Amazon Web Services, and some of the various tools that are available to you.

Craigerson...Awesome videos. Quick question. Do you know how to add SSL to your blog hosted on AWS? Google is now implementing a warning message in Chrome to users who visit websites that are not secured with SSL. Thanks again for the great advice in your videos.

Thanks for the compliment Richard. I saw the warning in Chrome a few months back, started freaking me out. Your not the first person asking the SSL question. I have not attempted to implement it, but have it as an idea for an upcoming video (doesn't do you much good). Sorry.

Hey Craigerson. Thanks for the reply. Here's a user guide I found on AWS site on Let's Encrypt. I'm going to test this out and let you know how it goes. docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/SSL-on-an-instance.html#letsencrypt

Please do Richard - Interested to see how this works out.

Lets encrypt seems to work well. You set up a chron job to renew every 3 months, so once its up you don't have to renew it.

Craigerson, I'm an avid follower of your tutorials and I must say that the way you explain AWS cloud is second to none. I have been following AWS stuff over the internet but it is way too complicated for a NON Coder. But the way you have explained it seems like a piece of cake. God Bless you.... I'd like to get your thoughts on AWS pricing structure. I mean a static blog like yours seems to cost around $10, and what about a Blog with a decent traffic and a bit more rich content (Videos, HD Pics, Media etc). How much would it cost. I think it would cost way more than $50 a month. And here we are talking about some less than a medium traffic blog. It makes AWS in my opinion way tooo much costly.... Digital Ocean on the other hand has a clear cut pricing with all the factors like Disk Space, Bandwidth, SPEED, RAM, CPU Cores etc combined in one package with a straight forward pricing, which starts for as low as $10 a month for 1 Gig of RAM. I think thats reasonably generous and AWS is way too costly and complicated in pricing structure. I'd really like to listen to your thoughts on this Craig.... and Thanks again for all those great tutorials...

Thanks for the compliment Muhammad, it's really appreciated. I was a little surprised at how much AWS was going to cost in my little experiment. I had one post, with one image, with basically zero traffic, and it was going to cost roughly $7/month. I thought for sure it would have been in the neighborhood of $2 - $3 per month. My hope was this would prove that you could host your own WordPress Blog in the Cloud for about the same price as a shared hosting provider. So I agree with your comment. If you start adding all kinds of media to a blog, and factor in a steady stream of users, there's no way an independent blogger could afford that. I guess you need to remember, what you are getting is basically the equivalent of a dedicated hosting plan. Probably not something most small or medium bloggers really need. I don't know anything about Digital Ocean, I'll have to check them out.

Very informative video. Hoping to learn more in-depth... Could you educate us for creating a master reseller hosting via AWS? Or a reseller hosting instead

Hi, Thanks for the video. It is really helpful. You know I am using AWS now, I have discovered that AWS is a lot faster than most of other hosting providers out there. Their server is really faster. But I am still confused with the new pricing, do you think the charge has been now changed in 2020??

I'd be interesting in seeing what your costs are given that AWS free tier service options.

That sounds about right for me also. I used to pay roughly 6 to $10 a month. For regular WordPress blogs. My newest project the only thing different is it is a dating app membership website. My cost for 2024 however has been much different. I now pay about $50 a month and looking in the cost optimizer can't figure out why. Is anyone else having issues like this? Anyone know what I can try?

Hi thank thank you for sharing, what was your set up cost initially to sign up with Amazon AWS? Again thanks for sharing this is helpful
@Craigerson
@Craigerson 5 лет назад
No initial cost to sign up with AWS. I was using AWS for a CDN on one of my blogs, so I was already paying a small monthly cost for that. If you haven't used AWS before, I believe you can still get a year free using some of their services, but there are limitations.

Where do you host your site after AWS?
@Craigerson
@Craigerson 5 лет назад
Not really sure what you’re asking. You don’t need to host it anywhere if you’re hosting on AWS.

I mean what web hosting company are you using right after AWS?

Is the speed with AWS EC2 hosting faster then let's say hostgator or godaddy? What about for seo ranking? Looks interesting. How do you like the service, still using it? 10$ per month for average wordpress blog?
@Craigerson
@Craigerson 6 лет назад
Speed really depends on what type of EC2 Server you set up. You have pretty much unlimited options with AWS when it comes to CPU, Cores, and Memory. The more you have, the more you pay. In my limited test, I was using a lower end server and didn't have any issues with performance. I'm not using the service right now to host a blog, but if I had the right use-case, I would absolutely use it.

The official AWS website describes a setup where you would pay 420 USD / month minimum for a Wordpress blog: ttps://aws.amazon.com/de/getting-started/projects/build-wordpress-website/services-costs/ - why do they describe a setup which is way more expensive than yours?
@Craigerson
@Craigerson 4 года назад
If you look at the individual components they are using, they are quite a bit more upscale then what I used. They also describe their example as a production ready process load, using a large scale EC2 Instance with a separate RDS, and load balancing. None of this was needed for my simple WordPress blog.
