Mattel Football was the "game changer" for me. I remember someone brought it to Boy Scout Jamboree and we played for hours in to the night. I'd never seen anything like it, a portable game in 1977, who could have imagined such a thing? It was some sci-fi Dick Tracy level stuff!

except for world of goo and celeste I would argue none of those indie games have done anything for the industry. Undertale, Shovel Knight, Steam World all would have been better selections for preservation.

The thing about preservation is that there will always be games that are favorites for some that won't make it in to the limited space that a museum may have. While Shovel Knight is AWESOME, as is the Steam World series (Undertale is great, but I could not really get into it), these indie games are meaningful in the subject matter, style, or mechanics they demonstrate. When Rivers Were Trails focuses on the impact of colonization on Indigenous communities in the 1890's, Unpacking has the player exploring the life and story of a character you never see while placing the things that represent their life in a new space, Adulting explores the mundane things that one must accomplish as an adult in modern society vs. a game about the fun/adventures to be had. While the games don't cover the breadth of the indie game scene, their inclusion helps bring more personal/deeper stories to the exhibition. Would love to see the titles you mentioned added as the exhibition evolves!
