In this video, I walk you through how to link up an analogue head through the Axe FX's effects loop, creating additional options for tones and signal paths.
The basics of this routing method are to allow you to use your amp head, separate of the Axe. Through routing the head through the Axe FX's effects loop, you are also able to run delay, reverb, phaser et al either before the analogue preamp or post.
In addition you can still use the Axe FX as a preamp sim as normal!
Head over to www.fractalaudio.com to download their manual for further details / options on routing.
Thanks for watching and remember to subscribe for more tutorials, demos and reviews.

I just want to personally thank you for saving me tens of hours of studying The AxeFX pdf’s (literally three weeks of studying), and not understanding why I couldn’t my Carvin Legacy 3 to work! I couldn’t find a single forum post nor any videos including the 4 cable method, with both the physical routings and the software routing, integrated so that it makes sense to newbies! Who would’ve known there’s four ways of using the send and receive function in the Axe FX😳 thank you kindly for you very clear and explanatory video!

Thank you! About to try this with my Axe FX 2 running into my EVH 5150 III just the way you have it set. I will post feedback to inform people if it still has that killer massive gain and chest pounding sound that the EVH has all its own. Thanks again.

+Matthew Eskel And has it worked? I own an EVH 5150 III to and want to upgrade it too. Cheers!

Thank You!! I had it hooked up the totally wrong way 😂😂. Now I got 1,000,000 options. Thanks for a helpful (not annoying and dumb) video 🤘🏾

Without looking at the routing options of a Pod I can't say for sure, but I'd imagine so, yeah. The other option is to run it straight into the FX return on the 5150 and use it as a pre amp; that's the standard routing. This allows you to use the modelled pres through the 5150 power amp. Thanks for watching and commenting mate.

I'd like to say thanks for posting this video, thought it was very clear and informative, i have an axe fx 2 in the post to be set-up with my marshall jvm 410h and 1936 cab and was aiming to have the choice of amp gain plus axe effects and axe fx preamp/sims and effects all running through my marshall's power amp, which to me seems the best of both worlds :) thanks again

Richard Norton Session -Thank you for this. It's the clearest video I have found re: this configuration. One question -Is the cable from Output 2 that runs into the front of your Orange amp a Humbuster cable?

Awesome video! You're very thorough. I assume this method would work similarly with a Line 6 pod pro live rack unit? I was thinking about getting one and running that through the fx loop on the clean channel of a Peavey 5150, the Peavey working as a power amp. I've also noticed many players using this method, not plugging into the amps input, but just the preamp unit.

Great vid man. I have the ultra and I wanted to have two outputs. 1) has poweramp and cab simulations and goes to the PA, and 2) with poweramp but no cab simulations and goes to a real cab on stage. Is that possible with the ultra? Thanks in advance for your help.

The only downside is your guitar signal goes through an A to D conversion then another D to A before it gets to the input of your amp. In addition using the fx loop in your amp fx loop you are also doing another AD-DA conversion so that is 4 total which bumps the latency up. I played on a tour using only the Axfx and with a digital wireless pack and a digital PEM pack it was 6 conversions to the house and 5 to my ear which was pushing the limits of latency and was not ideal.

Would this work in a chain with kemper and DI? For Example Fractal as effects, Kemper since I already have the profiles I want setup for cab/amps, to a DI for recording but basically wiring the kemper in like your orange but then running the l/r outs to a DI from the fractal?

Interesting, Richard. Let me ask you this Does having the Axe FX (every block off) intertwined like this, change the sound of the Orange very much? In other words -the sound at 3:03 if you were to remove the Axe, would that sound remain basically the same?

I did this and the volume is super low. is there anything i have to change in the Audio I/O on the Axe?

What would be the benefits of this? Would you effectively be able to run your head tube head signal straight to the FOH, using the Axe as a DI box? Does the tube warmth come through after it's processed through the Axe's effects return?
@richardnortonsession
@richardnortonsession 10 лет назад
You won't be able to DI the head, no. The Axe doesn't act as a loadbox; you'll still need to connect the head to a cab. The main idea here is to have the best of both worlds; digital preamps, allowing you to choose whichever voicing you want plus FX and processing, yet run through an analogue power amp, smoothing out the sound, and generating the saturation and compression everyone knows and loves.

Once everything is connected properly, am I free to use the patches as they are? Or do I need to put an "fx loop block" on the line of the axe fx?

I tried this and was able to get good tone at low volumes, but when I turn up to rehearsal volumes I get insane feedback when using the tube preamp.

The front input connected to the axe fx runs into the pedal board and then into your guitar?
@richardnortonsession
@richardnortonsession 9 лет назад
Ramon Martinez If you're using pedals, yeah. Treat it the same as you would the input of an amp. The Axe FX II's firmware has been model very well, and responds to pedals nearly exactly the same way as a real amp.

Do you have any idea of how you may do this with a pod hd pro x unit? I set up mine cable wise as close to this video as possible and had no luck.
@richardnortonsession
@richardnortonsession 9 лет назад
Without one to hand I couldn't tell you. The import part is being able to isolate where you send the FX loop out in the signal chain. Are you able to edit that to the same degree as the Axe FX?
@mullat215

After seeing this video and looking into it more, it does seem like i can modify the inputs and stuff so ill just have to mess with it. It just sucks i cant find any info on this particular situation for the pod!! Very frustrating.

Does this mean I can use my axe to record analog amps quietly instead of getting a torpedo live loadbox?
@Paincakes
@Paincakes 6 лет назад
No, the Axe FX does not do any attenuation of your analog head if that's what youre asking.
