I only recently got into crawlers and got me a Capra. I have added aluminum bead locks with inner brass rings. Hyrax tires, and treal belly plate with a stainless steel cover plate to protect from scraping up the really nice red aluminum treal belly. I also added front treal brass portals. I also did the pen spring mod and an o-ring mod to stop the shock oil leaks. It was amazing stock, but now it’s just crazy the things this thing can climb. More mods planned for later too. Great crawler platform, and extremely modifiable.
Have you shot any before and after comparison of climbs with and without the rear link riser installed? I tried mine out today with good results with rear shocks laid forward, but lost the ability to balance on the point of roll over when I stood shocks up, just to try differences. I always found mine to be awesome to balance on tipping point and work the front wheels to get back down. Similar boulder scenario to your excellent footage. I'm ready to try some different foams to hopefully improve tyre grip as I feel the Capra wants to keep going. Love the channel and the footage and vehicles you bring us. Looking forward to vs410pro footage. Cheers 👍
For the capera you need to learn how to use the dig. On vertical climbs use the dig to suck the front end down then engage 4x4 again. You could have made all those climbs with some dig practice. When your rear tire went under the rock go even farther to the right and carry the right rear tire in the air.
So far with my limited running, the Capra seems to be intended for slow crawling, doing other wise makes it a little unpredictable, like the throttle bumping. Means you have to be quite careful with tire and foam selection and one pairing may not be the best for the terrain currently venturing, best grip isn't always best, sometimes you need the tire to slide a little. So far it seems that the Voodoo KLR/M (shoulder is fairly firm) with single stage foams or the Pro Line SuperSwamper TSL/SX (Predator) with lil' Nova two stage 4.5 medium front and firm rear (my pick as best overall) works best in my area. Next I am trying BoomRacing Hustlers which like the Voodoo's have a pretty firm shoulder and side wall and CI's lil' Nova in 4.25 med front and 4.5 med rear. But what about the Hyrax.. won't pick them, I prefer a more scale tread design, and still expecting them to one day hit the banned list for SORRCA. I could very well end up going to my fail safe Pro Line BFG Krawlers. Its a crawler so I am using high mass wheel sets and don't worry too much about rolling mass. I also skipped the Dig and went with 4WS instead. Overall I am very impressed with the performance now, Axe 2300, 11t pinion, half spring pen mod, overdrive front, Reefs 422's to get it pointed in the right direction (on CC BEC). The drawback is the width, going to make for some interesting maneuvers now.
yeah, that's unfortunate. Slow crawling usually means it's not engineered right. In any case, the gearing is so high at 30:1 gear reduction and it's not easy to get it lower.
@@RCReviewChannel its not that hard. you just picked the wrong electronics. hh crawlmaster pro has multiple options for mounting the motor and can easily get a 9 tooth pinion inside the original motor housing. You just go straight to a 2300kv brushless for no good reason except "need wheel speed, sometimes"...The capra just isn't tuned correctly, simple as that. Also whoever drove it during those tests didn't really stand a chance. Wrong tires for that moist wet dirt and moss.
Did you use DIG at any point of your test? I couldn't tell but maybe I missed it. It looks like you have a really comprehensive course set up. Looking forward to the rest of the rigs. Thanks for the video.
Been waiting to build this but I'm on the fence after seeing your lcg chassis crawler video with that guy who builds them which is a better comp rig? Thanks Joe
Would there be any advantage to using the 'Dig' in those places where it wants to tip over backwards? Put the rear wheels in neutral and essentially have front wheel drive to pull over the rock? Thanks for the video and all you work!
The Capra dig isn't so smooth to use all the time. Can be, but not always. In those situations your referring to, once the rear is in neutral it won't hold dug into the climb. Kinda of releases it's upward drive as there is no weight on the front at that moment. It's good to play around with and sometimes it will hold and work to your favour, but not always. Cheers 👍
No, when dig is used to freewheel the rear, it simply doesn't have enough grip to climb any of these. Have tried about 50 situations where dig could have an advantage in these courses. Haven't really found any. Steep descents, dragging the rear is not really an advantage over a controlled motor that holds the wheels well. It' main edge really seems to be the extremely tight turns (not steep) where 3-point turns get a deduction (competitions).
Also love the video and I think all tires have there place. Very few are good everywhere. I'm more scale more than performance when it comes to tires . But on a comp truck I think after the capra came out you will find more tires will be coming out to be complimenting it . And just because you said so ! Lol
The Capra with proper suspension setup is a great crawler the dig has a couple of benifits mostly in comps but my husbands is being setup for class 3 and recon g6 events such as the fix enduro
From what I have discovered the Capra is meant for slow torque based crawling so since this test involves a lot of fast driving I’m not surprised by the results
RC Review idk it just seems like it’s best suited for slow crawling... I mean it doesn’t have front independent suspension so it’s not much of a high speed vehicle... on the other hand it’s not super scale kind of slow
I think I know where this is. Im new to crawlers and havent been able to get mine up half the stuff experienced drivers do. its amazing how much is skill vs how much is machine capability. tho having a scale vehicle with a bumper in the way does limit getting started on terrain like the Steep Wall #1. I have to go up on the dirt side and try to make it down without rolling....ended up in the pond twice lol
@@DaytonaJim78 Everything fine, dude! What about you? 😃 Yeah, I love rc in general. And I guess I only wouldn't put FPV in rc boats, because of the water! 😂
Nice test as the usual, Capra seems very capable but I have 6 Axial Wraiths that I plan on giving away because I’m done dumping money into those pits. I have built some of the bad’ Wraiths around and there still just money pits. Was thinking about trying one out but I really like scale vehicles now. I’m still on the fence about it. Definitely buying my Traxxas 6X6 first though.
Nice man!! Yes, the 6x6 is an eye-opener. The Wraith 1.9 is a project car for sure. This Capra is hard to judge as it's not an impressive performer off the bat.
Rc Madness well I’m gonna start a channel soon and give a few of them away on the channel, no 6x6 give away I was talking about me buying the new traxxas 6x6 for myself. It’s gonna be an ordeal on the Wraith give away deal, one of them is a $1200 rc and it’s a piece of crap in my opinion but not just gonna say here you go. I’ll let you know brother
Love watching the Capra. Haven't yet had the chance (partly due to work, partly due to working on two other projects, partly due to wife) to take it out for some "extreme" testing, but looking forward to it...as soon as I can. That being said, I gotta ask this. Where, exactly, is this 'testing ground' located? I've been looking for some really good locations to test my Capra, as well as whatever other crawlers I end up building (the Trail King is mostly finished...needs an ESC, body, wheels, and tires), but haven't come across anything as of yet. I thought about Hellyer Park, but it sucks. I tried Santa Teresa Country Park, but there was nothing worthwhile. Baylands Park is great for the drone, but don't think they have anything for crawling. For "general/extreme testing", I don't want to have to travel to far from San Jose...say, 30 minutes max...but I need something better than a basic hillside, a pile of cinder blocks, or a bunch of twigs across a tiny creek. I could contact you by email, but I don't know the email address (plus, for obvious reasons, I don't exactly want to post my personal email address on RU-vid). Do you have a non-personal email address you could post?
@@Randaddy Thanks. Funny thing is, in looking for possible places to go, I had looked it up on Google Maps a couple weeks ago. However, I just haven't made it there...yet.
I'm not 100% sure it will be top, but a tie or close second. I have a mild brushless trx4 sport and three guys I run with have brushless Capra's. There are some obstacles the Capra walks all over and I have to beat my truck hard to get through, over, or up. They also had a hard time climbing a waterfall I walked right up. I'd say it's a 50/50 split, maybe a little more leaning towards the Capra. But it's going to be dependent on where you run. Both are good rigs, but I'm more than happy keeping my trx4 and not joining Club Capra lol.
I couldn't agree more even with 90mm dampers with droop set up it has a HCG problem. I know Hot racing has brass hop ups on ebay but they're so expensive
@@kravenkrawlhobby5438 keep in mind the center caps are meant to screw on to the outer shaft of the trx4 Blazer and bronco which has a longer threaded end for the center caps to screw onto. I have not tried, but I've gave thought of gluing lock nuts inside a set of the center caps to be used on regular axle shafts.
I see that you are running a rear link antisquat riser. What’s your take on antisquat setups for the Capra? I’ve been eyeing on from super supershafty.com. Which riser are you running in the video?
I'm running the one that first came out at Shapeways. Really helps climbing under power. Rear doesn't squat and flip it over. The rear articulation is compromised a bit during power.
The riser he is using is available on Shapeways at www.shapeways.com/shops/3-axis-design. There are several variations currently available. The one he is using was the first iteration, which features a single mounting hole with increased triangulation of the rear upper links. There is also a 2-hole mounting version as well as a link riser that features the same upper link triangulation as stock, but in a raised mounting location to increase anti-squat.
RC Review thank you for your opinion and reply! Love the crawler shootout you guys have going on your channel. It’s great to see these rigs fitting the same lines!
Any vehicle that goes up the dirt hill first will be at a disadvantage because that's the truck that will take the slippery mud off the top exposing the grip for the trucks that follow.
I can't believe how many of these RC channels don't have a video simply comparing the rr10 bomber to the capra. Seems like a common sense question to answer. Just build videos and no comparison or design progression discussions.
I have a question , you do the best reviews on everything. I'm looking to start a utube channel and looking for a basic super easy to use editing app for android. Con you do any reviews on editing apps or can you just steer me in the right direction. Keep in mind I'm not tech savvy at all . Thanks a bunch
@@RCReviewChannel ok thanks , I finally figured that out , its just the editing part . All the ones I looked at are pretty hard to use for me anyway. And really that is the biggest part , editing , so if you do please try to cover that.
Capra needs bigger tires. The wheel base is way too long, and the track is too wide for normal 1.9 tires. That will help mitigate high center problems.
Those tires don't seem to be worth all the hype!! Do you think 2.2 much softer compound would really show case this rig? Just wondering!! Not convinced yet about buying this rig!!
Nice Review of the Capra capabilities. I agree that the dig is best used for tight turning, although I have seen it help in a few very specific other instances. Also there are now front overdrive gears sold through SuperShafty. I know you like the overdrive on a couple of your other trucks. I have not tested them yet but installed them today!
Eric Shanahan your comment shot right to my phone for some reason. Like it was a tag, weird but now I’m responding to it. You have a Capra? Was thinking about it but I have a lot of money into Axial Wraiths and there garbage to me. My baby, well use to be but I’m done with all of them. $1500 into one and all it ever does is breaks. I have 6 of them and ever one of them are broken in one way or another. Done with all that and Axial caged rc’s altogether.
I can’t unfortunately compare it to a Wraith as I have never had one. However, I have 8 other assorted trucks from Traxxas to Redcat to Axial and I can say they hit a home run with the Capra. It really performs stock. And with just a few mods it is amazing. I will say there are some instances my Trx4 Sport will outperform it.....but the Sport is heavily modified. I don’t think you can go wrong with the Capra. Oh tested the overdrive in it...Wow is all I can say!
Eric Shanahan see after hearing stuff like that it’s just making me want to scoop one up. It’s a serious addiction to me, though I fear if I buy one I will go over the top with it and be unhappy as with the Wraiths. I was gonna run portals on my one of my Wraiths but I just came to the conclusion there junk cause nothing keeps them running. Regardless the fact I try really hard to break them these break to easy. Seems the only advantage the Capra has is nice looking portal axels. Our brother here on rc review even things there set up is just.....well I don’t want to put words in his mouth but pros and cons are all part of all reviews I guess. They seem pretty honest cause some do a review and still try sell a sack of shit likes it’s the best thing since sliced bread. You know what I speak
Eric Shanahan you got it brother, and that can’t be a real review. After the Traxxas 6x6 I’m gonna scoop the VS4 10 pro just cause all the reviews and the main review to me on it was rc review. Maybe we can do a little trading for a cage I have, don’t know how much rc stuff you have but if your real about it brother you should have plenty
I like bumper, they prevent the car from laying on the roof. For me, this is more important than 90° approach and departure angle, and also, it is much more realistic.
I wish you could have took 2 extra seconds to put the interior in it just looks unfinished when your trying to make a video .not to mention the people talking in the background so it's like who's talking
It has an Axe ESC and wires that are massive so it doesn't fit. This vehicle is such a pain to work on. Will change the motor and fit the interior though.
It’s kinda weird this vehicle. One would think that a purpose built crawler would be awesome and much better compared to a scaler truck, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Every video I’ve seen hasn’t been very promising.
@@RCReviewChannel I agree , it definitely has better approach angles, I assumed you had said the trx was equal at end video by statement made , they did good job with capra , comes to crawling also very realistic more so than 1to1 scale
