DRY-BRUSHING - I've seen pretty much the SAME EFFECT by Dry-Brushing - a contrasting color (light or dark) gets into the little spots of detail and makes them STAND-OUT against the basic color coat !! THANKS for the video ! :-)

I love this weathered look. I thought I would probably be like YG and not paint my pieces but this video has absolutely changed my mind. I have already started stocking paint to start this process. First I have to magnetize planes and carriers then I’ll give the weathered look. Great video and explanation. Thanks

I use Army Painter Quickshade Soft Tone polyurethane and use a cheap model paint brush to brush on my infantry and other units. It helps not to pool stain. And when done to help with any shiny areas I spray with a Matt varnish to further seal and even out tone. Looks fantastic on my other scale minis too. Great job on your game pieces and the spray colors look perfect.

Exactly. Same here. Good advice for people looking for a similar result but perhaps an easier and less messy method.

Well I am going to do this for sure on my War of the Ring set. I'll have to think through a color scheme for my A&A pieces now that I have entered the realm of GW36-45. Overall I can see where having your own color scheme like this could give you flexibility making HBG purchases. I.e. no more worrying about getting the right color of a piece.

Exactly! I was also tired of having 2-3 different colors of green for US as well. Very cool technique. The camera doesn’t do it justice.

The colors sides used are great. The green apple for China is Better than OOB IMO. I like having Germany grey rather than black, and the orange for japan and yellow for U.K. are amazing. US color is ok, but I like the Russia red color better than the deep maroon OOB. You are correct in having flexibility. I ordered some Japanese tanks and they were out of all colors except one color (which apparently no one wants). Since I paint them anyway, it didn’t matter what color I got:-)

Fantastic video man! These and Siredblood's pieces look so cool. He showed what spray paints to use in that one video, and I was going to just use those, thinking the weathered look would be too hard for me to pull off. This seems easy enough though (even for me). Thanks for sharing!

I'd use army painter speed paints which is a contrast paint. Than cone back and do a wash which will age and further shade the areas the contrast paints did not do in the first place.

Don't dip them, just thin it out with terpentine (or whatever solution can be used) and apply it with a large brush and use another large brush to wipe of the excesses. Faster too...

Nice job I do something similar with my minis and models
@danielsgustum2345

Looks awesome.. Just a thought. I have painted 1000s of warhammer miniatures and this method is quite similar to the shading method ive used which i believe will give you more control on where the shadow and "popping" of the details. Just use a black paint and mix it thin with water (after youve primed and/or used the color you want) and then use a pencil to add the shading. Now you can pick between shading the whole miniature, or just shade the details you want to "pop" up.. Anyways, great video and definitely something I will do on either the Global or the aniversery edition.

Great advice! Thanks! I will definitely look into this. Considering painting another set in colors that resemble the actual tanks/planes/etc... make it more life like.

Thanks. I’m undecided on the Moss. I’ll paint and weather piece in the Eden to compare before I decide.

Well, I can probably tell you you’ll like eden better... as you mentioned, lighter the piece, detail pops more.

Loving the weathered look, almost makes it look metallic! You had me at the carpet bombing of spray paint on the units, but you lost me at the drowning of each and every single piece in polyurethane+ wiping even though it looks cool - only because it's just too tedious work for my lazy and impatient tendencies..... I WANT IT NOOOOW!!!
@gijoe616
@gijoe616 6 лет назад
Yeah, it’s a little time. For priming it’s only 20-40 min for both sides. Painting is a few hours + waiting to dry 3 days. Poly will take some time. I figure if I do one country an evening I can be done in 8-9 days. As with anything...the good things in life sometimes take time:-) Plenty of time do get done before I’m hosting ATL A&A.
@mikeplog9354
@mikeplog9354 2 года назад
Hi. Nice work! Appreciate the tutorial! A quick question: Seeing as the poly mostly gets soaked up by a paper towel, do you then do a clear coat? …and if so, what finish do you use? Thanks, and very much enjoy your vids!

Did you get the soldiers on HBG or somewhere else. I'm having the hardest time finding toy soldiers to scale.

Hello. I didn’t get them from HBG (the Waterloo Japanese) but I see that they sell them there, however they are out of stock. You might also check hobbylinc.com the scale for A&A is 1/72 www.hobbylinc.com/pegasus-japanese-infrantry-wwii-plastic-model-military-figure-kit-1:72-scale-ap022

Why were those colors chosen? Like why Eden instead of olive-drab?
@gijoe616
@gijoe616 5 лет назад
Just preference really. I saw them weathered and liked them. I did try Moss green for US and it worked, however when I put poly on it it darkened it too much...almost blackish. The Eden paint gave me what I wanted.

Plenty of ways to skin a cat with the same outcome. And, on that note, why not try to be less condescending the next time you post a reply. That big tin of lacquer costs less then all the nuln oil you would need to do all those pieces #notourfirstrodeo
