This concert was a formative earth-shattering event for me... I was there, and Aydin played several other absolutely astounding pieces that evening, in fact he played several concerts over the course of about a one year period, each one incredible. To say that Aydin Esen is brilliant, unique, a limitless fount of sublime harmonic and melodic innovations executed with unparalleled virtuosity, would be an understatement. Many thanks to Rick Beato for posting this and keeping this flame alive, for when future generations of musicians and musicologists examine the historical terrain, they will marvel at and study the music of this great genius, Aydin Esen.

Patrick Ryan Bach’s music was almost forgotten by the early XIX Century, and it really took someone like Mendelssohn - artist of that caliber, to make the world aware of Bach’s Greatness. With most of the Great artists of today, including Aydin - they will be forgotten, and suddenly in the future when humanity matures (perhaps one day) this music will be transcribed and studied. Holdsworth, Mays, Metheny, Corea, Brecker, Ogermann, Henderson, Willis, Mintzer, even Jerry Goldsmith - those names don’t ring a bell with majority of people. I hope that thanks to people like Rick Beato, the names of real Giants won’t be fofgotten...

Rick, I am wondering if you have any recommendations for artists with similar sounds to Aydin. Ideally, something like what I hear in this video (very dense melodic lines, dissonant block chords, jazz inluenced, etc.).

Brad Mehldau, late Lennie Tristano, late Bill Evans, some Kenny Barron

LaEscuelaNueva Study for several years Slonimsky’s “Thesaurus...”. You will most definitely sound pretty close :) That’s the book many GIANTS studied inside and out - that’s why they became giants. Coltrane, Brecker, Mays, Jarret, and certainly Aydin. When I grew up in Central Europe, that book was one of the most important thing for any aspiring musician. Sadly, it’s completely forgotten now, partly because it takes someone like Aydin’s mind, talent, passion and dedication to master it. Play exercises from Nicolas Slonimsky’s Thesaurus and after just several days you will all of a sudden discover certain freedom of improvisation in Pandiatonic Harmony. The only thing about this book is, that it is difficult, takes enormous amount of time, inner energy and dedication to reach that goal of “acquiring it all”. That’s why only few GIANTS to this day truly mastered Pandiatonic Harmony.

@@KrystofDreamJourney are there any good videos about these methods? Aydin reminds me of Keith Jarrett, Makoto Ozone and Chick Corea. And there’s a great pianist, composer and educator, Ran Blake, who really plays and thinks melodically out of the box, which is how I would describe this ‘style’.

This is what i call the lost voice of classical impro- a free compositional impro without the limitation of notes, standard or a form, just free spiritual impro from the heart. Because of all the note reading in classical music and all the Realbook and Standard overrated value this kind of art is forgotten, the problem is that people don't understand that This Is Real Improvisation.

Yeah historically classical actually did have improvisation. The young mozart actually became famous as a child for improvising minuets and the like.

I totally understand what do you mean and actually I'm agree with you. But on the other hand, boundaries, or frames are through what we could compare different artists. Even in Mozarts and Beethovens improvisations there are some kind of rules. In the same time, in some cases art itself means breaking of these rules or frames in a certain way. P.S. But, Aydın Esen iz truly genius.

8:01 Sounds like the part Dylan was shown listening to... Thanks Rick for all you do for music and musicians and those who appreciate music. I came to your when I was doing a RU-vid search when Allan Holdsworth passed. I watched your instructional and then a while after that I started researching Standards and The Great American Songbook and after a few weeks of that your videos kept coming up so I started binging on those while still studying Standards. And then through you I started watching Aimee Nolte videos... and through Aimee, Jacob Collier... Now what I'm really noticing is that when I return to something like "God Only Knows" that I go deeper into it... also the loose music... some R&B or Hip Hop coming from a car or s house resonates more... It's also led me back to more Classical... The great thing about music is we can have it all... All the genres are a gift... but High Content Music opens the doors to deeper appreciation of all music.

Esen is truly fluent in music to the point where he walks a thin line between tonality and outright Schoenbergian 12-tone-ality. I don't think he would allow himself to become so rigid as to stick with tone rows ; he is way too FREE a player, but god, does he not love dotting his landscape with what one might call "The Wrong Notes." But in bringing such things to our ears, he, like Schoenberg, makes you realize that music should never be NORMAL but always breaking boundaries, and that there is no such thing as "wrong notes.". All I can say is "Can you imagine being in his mind all day as he ponders compositions, ideas, and general novelty ?" I would imagine at his level, music must become so wide open that you realize "the more you know and think music, the more you realize how much MORE there is to DO." His mind is a well-oiled turbo-charged engine. God Bless him.

@bob smith My favorite thing about it is that it IS ephemeral. I enjoy struggling to keep up. That fact that he plays what, for me would be a melody that I would vamp on for weeks, ONCE and then moves on to the next amazing thing is what keeps me enthralled. If I could grasp everything it would not be nearly as exciting to me. If he took ten of the best parts and honed them down to their barest essentials then elaborated on them it would be a beautiful piece but it would not hold me in rapture the way these improvisations do.

@RickBeato
@RickBeato 7 лет назад
Jamie Fekete He listened to it everyday with the same intensity. It changed his brain. This is why Dylan can hear all those complex sounds and decipher them. There is such a higher level structure to Aydin's improvisations that infants could immediately recognize it. He only reacted to Aydin's music like that. I would play Dylan all kinds of music but Aydin's improvisations were the only ones that got that reaction.

@patrickryan7199
@patrickryan7199 7 лет назад
Alex Hartery I'm a huge fan of Keith Jarrett, I have followed him for 40 years. I am not aware of anything he has recorded that comes close to expressing the sustained flow of ideas, the harmonic complexity or the technical (especially left hand) virtuosity demonstrated in this one improv by Esen. Jarrett is great, but IMHO Esen is on a completely, utterly higher level.
@AlexHartery
@AlexHartery 7 лет назад
Patrick Ryan I agree with you completely on the surface. but looking at some of Keith's career and his memory I feel like they are on the same field but just coming at it from different directions of thought.
@squalenberger
@squalenberger 7 лет назад
In my opinion, Keith is not as "adventurous" as Aydin, and to me that translates in Esen being more advanced than Jarrett, at least when it comes to improvisation. If only Aydin had the same media exposure...
