Turkey was the third largest participant in the U.N. alliance during the Korea War. Turkey is a brother country to Korea, and 720 Turkish soldiers perished in the Korean War.
The Battle of Gunuri in North Korea was one of the fiercest battles, and there, Turkish soldiers demonstrated their bravery.
Second Lieutenant Suleyman Birbiley, who fought in the Korean War under the command of the U.N., is now 85 years old.
He took care of Korean War orphan "Ayla" for a year and a half at his barracks during the war, and 60 years later, he wishes to meet her.
However, the only leads he has are photos from back then and a Turkish name, Ayla. This program will introduce the story of Mr. Birbiley, a Korean War veteran, and Ayla, and by doing that, will shed new light on the truth about the Korean War and what the U.N. alliance meant to the war.

i think adopting orphans and taking care of them wherever they were stationed (they moved place to place and had to take the children with them sometimes) helped them mentally too. korean war was not just about shooting and bombing. especially in turkish vs chinese fronts there were many occassions they relied solely on bayonets and knives like in the ww i. they probably witnessed terrible things we can't dream of. keeping children relying on them probably assisted to keep their humanity intact and raised their morale in a fight thinking if they fall, children would do too.

I'm a Korean American from NJ. Some time ago, I was in Atlanta, GA for a business trip. When I arrived at the Airport, I took a taxi to get to my hotel. And the driver happened to be a Turkish gentleman. We started to talk and he found out that I'm a Korean American. He was so happy to give me the ride. We talked for the duration of the ride, and he offered to take me around the city for free. He just wanted to show me the kindness. Knowing that the relationship between Turkey and Korea started 1,400 years ago, and that Turkish soldiers fought for Koreans during the Korean War, I cannot thank you folks enough. Perhaps I wouldn't exist today without you fine Turkish people and the rest of the allied soldiers! Thank you all for your bloodshed and bravery! And respect to all the veterans for the sacrifice that you've made. cause the freedom isn't free!

The most impressive and emotional real life story I have ever watched and heard in my life. And in a war. I bow respectfully to this brave and compassionate Turkish soldier. It is very impressive that they found each other again and hugged each other with the same love, even though 60 years have passed. It is impossible not to cry while watching all this. Suleyman is a real father with a big heart. In his eyes, Ayla is still his 5-year-old little daughter. And finally, love knows no barriers. Love has no language, color, race or religion. The most important thing in this life is to be human and remain human. I have infinite respect for the brave Turkish soldiers who fought and died for the freedom of Korea without expecting anything in return. With my respect and love to the Turkish and Korean people. You should know that the love and respect for Korea in Turkey is unconditional. Really i can say everyone loves or at least respect Korea, You can not find 1 person out of the 83 million who will hate korea. Maybe you can find people with no opinion, but not one with bad opinion. Korean people are much like us Turkish people, You are respectfull, honorfull, you care about your traditions, culture, you are gratefull and down to earth people. Not cocky at all. You love and respect your elderly, Not many nations has these characteristic, maybe this is also the reason why Turks feel bounded with Korea, maybe it is the blood what unite us, because if we go back in history, the Turkish homeland is the Altaic region, from modern day China up until Caucausus the entire north

I'm Korean, and I can tell confidently that many Koreans thank Turkish people for coming first when the Korean War broke out. In fact, my great grandfather was saved by Turkish Army. Althoug he passed away, I still remember him often saying that he cannot forget the Turkey soldier who saved him in the mountains and took care of him. okay, guys. I can see that there's people saying things abt Filipino soldiers. Of course I acknowledge their help and sacrifice, and of course we thank every single soldiers who took part in the war. However, this was a comment just mentioning what my great grandfather experienced, and does not mean that Turkish army was the only help to us Koreans :)

It is very moving to watch this document already, but when you know the circumstances the Turkish soldiers were in, it's even more impressive that they were able to build an orphanage and these stories still happened. Turkey was still a poor country at that time and US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles at the time gave a speech to the senate saying Turkish soldiers would cost 23 cents a month, compared to $70 a month per US soldier. Even in such hardship this man and many alike took care of all those children because those kid had suffered the most during that war. A truly commendable story!

Turkish people are maniacs, its their strong feel for love of someone they think they need to protect. Look at turkish Ultras in football, they are crazy, because they love it THAT much. Same story goes for tourists in turkey or anything else. Turkish people mainly act out of heart & instinct. Turkish people feel strongly responsible of someone who cant defend themselves especially children / animals and protect and feed them generally if they are able to in general, thats why its globally known that turkish people love cats. They love to teach and share anyone about their culture to make them feel comfortable and make it seem like a warm environment even if its war out there, in Aylas Case. Napoleon once said he only would have needed turks in his army to rule the world, because he knows turks only see do or die, death or glory, lose your soil or protect your homeland whatever it takes. Their bond with allies is a literal thing for them and not only "on paper" they take these bonds seriously and also get emotional because of that.

(Im korean) My mother always told me that in Korean war Turkish helped a lot and they are considered as a brother country even they dont look like a typical "asian"(like Chinese or japanese) and when i was young I was amazed by that. Because of course I was too little to know that there are people outside of Korea who can be called as brother even they dont look like a korean😅. And watching this make me cry 😭😢 and be thanked a lot to Turkish. Life is full of love and mysterious encounter. So sad that they were reunited too late. Both of them tried to meet each other again. That part make me so sad. That she was too little and lack of information.

He would say that the children collected bread from the garbage. he never finishes his food, he saves it and takes it to children. When he shared his food with the children, he would say their happiness is not explained. If God give him more life, I would like to take him to Korea one day...
