This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Ayn Rand's essay "the Objectivist Ethics" (In The Virtue of Selfishness), specifically on her discussion of the difference between other animals and human beings, which has to do with the range and types of consciousness we have.

I was once looking at a lobster in a tank floating starring at me and i asked it, i wonder what it is you might think about are different worlds? The lobster took a moment and looked at me kinda sideways and said "Human beings are the only creatures on Earth "that claim a God."And the only living thing that behaves like it hasn't got one."Does the world belong to no one but you?" And when he said it, I was taken back. Not because of who was doing the talking, but because I finally understood the connection between children scavenging for food and shiny brass plates on the front doors of banks

17:44 Rand's definition of a concept. Volitional state of consciousness. Reading Science of Logic, Hegel referencing Kant describes after when the I is the notion, the understanding as the application of intuition and feeling.

What I find interesting is that your schematic seems to reveal the bipolar and even reciprocal nature of Rand's egoism/objectivism that I never recognized before. As you move up the schematic you both gain and lose something and likewise as you move down the schematic. As you move up the schematic you gain in range of consciousness which is subjective in nature while you lose a sense of resilience that exists most formidably in objective matter. As you move down the schematic you lose the range of of subjective consciousness but gain in objective resilience. The value reflected in broadened subjective consciousness is egoism whereas the value reflected in resilient objective matter is objectivism.

There's zero intrinsic connection between the schematic and Rand's egoism/objectivism. Like I said in the video, this way of understanding being has ben around for two millennia before she picked it up

@@GregoryBSadler I was never suggesting that this was Rand's invention only that I have discovered a means of evaluating her work yet unrealized thanks to your schematic. You have a way of rearranging ideas that help me see things from perspectives yet unconsidered which I find rare. Thank you for all that you do.

According to Rand, going up doesn’t means the contents of your mind become subjective. Rather, it’s a choice. The choice is to focus your mind on reality and validate your ideas against the facts available to you in perceptual form, or evade it in which case your ideas are now subjective. If you’ve ever been in a court proceeding, you will see that due process is designed to help the jury draw objective conclusions by guiding them to look at reality.

For whatever reason, most are too quick to disregard Rand. Which is really a shame. I had a huge amount of respect for you, but taking her philosophy seriously makes me respect you a lot more.

I treat her as I would any other thinker when I teach her work

I agree, as per Dr Sadler's advice I have bought her virtue of selfishness to begin reading. I have avoided her work for too long due to her reputation and my own biases against economic libertarianism.
