This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Ayn Rand's essay "the Objectivist Ethics" (In The Virtue of Selfishness), specifically on her views about how a rational egoist ought to behave and structure their life, choices, and relationships.

Generally speaking i agree with Dr Sadler's interpretation of Rand on the matter of virtue and value. That being said, i disagree with how he applied her principles in his example of treating two students in his classroom better or more favourably than the rest of his class because he knows them better. I think Rand would disagree with this. Knowing a student better or for longer is not grounds to discriminate in such a way that he should offer preferential treatment for them but not for the rest of the class. Rand would say that as a Teacher you have a responsibility to education every student in your classroom to the best of your ability - and in that respect you are not playing favourites. That said, there may be instances or occasions in which certain students are more engaging and productive than others, and they should be rewarded for that. If a tiny minority of students are inconsistent with their studies for example - they fail to do their homework, they fail to turn up to every lesson or they are rude during class than Rand would say that it would be a moral injustice to treat those students the same as those students who are hungry for knowledge and attentive to their work. That does not mean that in class during a lesson you ignore the "bad" students but that you are more willing to devote time outside the classroom (marking papers etc) to the students putting in the work. Each individual and their actions must be judged objectively.

"Rand would say that as a teacher you have a responsibility to education [sic] every student in your classroom". Nope, she wouldn't as it conflicts with her "Rational Egoism". The only moral responsibility the teacher has according to Rand, is to further his/her own happiness, whatever that may be. That's why she gave her "ideal hero" Howard Roark a big O.K for raping a woman.

@@huntsman8787 wrong. Justice is a big virtue of her ethics, and what is not rational treating people accordingly depending on their character? Being an egoist does bot mean being a solipsistic hermit.

The idea that you would give your student-friend a higher grade than he has earned drops the context that Rand says that you are your highest value. If you hold that context, then you will recognize that your pride (moral ambitiousness) as a teacher, your integrity in agreeing to the terms of your position to give grades based on merit, and your sense of justice means you do not grant higher grades to friends than they have earned.

Regarding the man who lets his wife drown, is there a contradiction of his values or is there a revealing of his real values? Often we fail to understand what our hierarchy of values really are until those values come into conflict in a concrete way. Our actions don't contradict our values rather they betray them sometimes to others and sometimes even to ourselves.

Lots of people have contradictory value commitments. Rand is far from the only person to point that out.

@@GregoryBSadler I agree we all have contradictory value commitments born out of ignorance. Values, on the other hand are all inherently contradictive, the solution of which is a hierarchy of values which removes the contradiction in the value system by making each value of differing significance. My point is that the man didn't save his wife not because he betrayed his values but rather in a moment of concrete conflict he realized that he didn't actually value her as much as he previously thought he did. If a "friend" betrays me my take on it isn't that my friend betrayed me it's that he was never my friend to begin with. It simply took a moment of concrete conflict in his values to expose that and reveal my ignorance and maybe even his. The truth, regarding his values, was always the truth even before I recognized it. Maybe that's what Rand means and I'm just misunderstanding her claim.

Maybe more clearly put is that we don't actually know what are values are we have to discover what they are in concrete situations.

I have a question for you that consult about Max stirner, when confronting a egoist who describes human structural systems as spooks, how can rational-egoism show reason and argue successfully to Max stirner's egoism?
@GregoryBSadler
@GregoryBSadler 4 года назад
Why would one need to? Why bother trying to convince a Stirnerian of anything?

Gregory B. Sadler Simply because I haven't talked to a Egoist before, as well I want to know how the philosophy works in practice. To the man I was texting to, he called most established words and concepts to be spooks, since nearly every statement I made are spooks to him, witch I had no ground to stand on for structure, Even man, nature and property is spooks to his worldview, witch confused me and I wasen't able to show reason. To him he went "It’s more real if god gives it to you, or if you serve some higher ideal like “Reason”-with-a-capital-R" It was a difficult and unknown experience for me, to understand the philosophy of egoism without being rational, as how can one man live as a egoist without reason? I am still a student to aristotelian and objectivism, so I have much to learn and experience. To my conclusion, I text this comment as you seem more knowledgeable about the subject then me, I have little understanding how one egoist thinks, so put it simply, thought I text and learn more how to approach a egoist wisely, as I failed to shared reason with. Thank you for reading this comment, my English grammer isn't great yet I do my best to make my points on what I know. Again thank you.

If it were me, I wouldn't waste valuable time trying to reach someone who is not likely to be a decent dialogue partner. But sometimes that is something you have to learn over time. On a different note, while Rand says that her philosophy is Aristotelian, she and her followers actually get Aristotle wrong on many points, and the guiding spirit of her philosophy would be repugnant to Aristotle himself. So, if you study both, you'll eventually come to a point of needing to decide between the two approaches

The guy who freezes up isn't failing in the moment. He failed long before by not developing appropriate reactions in high stress situations. In the moment you often have very little time to be rational, to do so one must have mastered their lower order organic responses. He has not set himself the task of being equal to the world.
