This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Ayn Rand's essay "the Objectivist Ethics" (In The Virtue of Selfishness), specifically on her views about values and their grounding in Life (which for humans means a distinctively human life, not merely survival).
[Unfortunately, the class next door was watching some sort of show, with the music turned up fairly loud, so we have an involuntary soundtrack.]

I'm not particularly fond of Rand (even less so her devoted followers) - but it's important to study the work of those with whom you disagree. I believe Hume wrote something about it,; that if you are unfamiliar with the claims you wish to argue against, the claims you want to make are de facto undermined. I kinda botched that because I can't recall the quote! "Life as an ultimate value" - that sounds very Nietzschean.

Yes, most of her followers I've met are nutters and terrible at philosophy

@@GregoryBSadler True enough. To the extent that I agree with Rand I find other philosophers (eg Aristotle) said it better and more coherently. The hardest part is the Randian lexicon. They have their own definitions that often go against both popular and academic usage but Randians will accuse you of obfuscation if you don't use their definitions. And lastly I have a hard time forgiving how much they plagiarize Kant, give him no credit, and demonize him for all of the world's ills.

I wish I’d had you for Philosophy. I brought up rational egoism one time and the professor said it was a joke. I must’ve missed the punchline.

Well, rational egoism isn't a joke. But it's not particularly good either

@@GregoryBSadler Based on this video, I think that you understand rational egoism well, so I am very curious if you have any videos where you talk about what you think the problems with it are? (Or perhaps could you give a reference to some article that you think refutes it?) Thanks in advance.

Great video as always, by the way there is any channel on RU-vid about sociology that is like this channel? I've been searching and every channel I find they are too much superficial with videos of 10 minutes or less and just talk about general concepts without going deep on it

Some people don't consider Rand to a philosopher; what are your thoughts on that? I really love your work, thank you.

Ayn Rand effectively ruined any chance of her philosophy influencing the academy through her blatant cultism and uncharitable treatment of other philosophers. Since she dismissed all ideas which conflicted with her worldview- usually without taking the time to properly understand them- the response from the intellectual community has largely been to return the favour.

Why do many people consider Rand not a "real philosopher"?
@GregoryBSadler

Mostly prejudice and being too lazy to read what they're talking about. She's a philosopher. Not a particularly good one, but a philosopher
