Continuing my drive around Scotland’s South West Coastal 300 - one of the lesser visited road trips in the Lowlands of Scotland. After driving for two days I‘ve made it to the coastal section of the route and a road (A77) that follows the beautiful Ayrshire coastline from Ayr to Stranraer. This is a self drive solo road trip that follows a circuit around the Galloway National Forest.
My first stop of the day was Dunure, a small fishing village with a 13th century ruined castle and a quaint harbour complete with a row of white cottages previously occupied by fishermen. Just down the road I found and explored the mysterious Electric Brae - a place where you can release your handbrake and watch your car roll uphill. It was historically believed that electrical forces were causing this strange phenomenon but these days there’s a simpler explanation.
The road continued with magnificent views along the coastline and out to sea - it really was a pleasure to drive. Before long I was passing by Trump Turnberry Golf Club and decided to park up and go in search of the famous Turnberry Lighthouse which involved walking through the golf course. The lighthouse was a pleasure to see and I was able to walk around to the front which was brightly shining in the sun.
After more coastal driving I stopped in the harbour town of Girvan for a walk around the High Street, beach area and park. My main goal however was to find the legendary Old Stumpy! Down at the waterfront the shadow of Ailsa Craig dominates the seascape and there is something very intriguing and fascinating about standing there looking out towards it.
Before long I was back on the road and enjoying more of the Scottish South West coastline as I drove towards Cairnryan. I’d say this stretch of the South West Coastal 300 is my favourite so far with incredible ocean passes, winding roads and magnificent views out towards the fiery sky and setting sun. It’s what road trips are supposed to be!

Your editing with the 'it works' as you roll backwards was ON POINT 🙌💪 I knew of a place like this in Eastern Canada, but didn't have a car at the time as I was too young to rent one to visit it - didn't know there was one in Scotland! Turnberry lighthouse was adorable - I'm so used to seeing them all white and turquoise in the UK, so lovely to see the trimmings yellow instead. The light you managed to capture in Girvan was beautiful - really appreciated the sunset at the beach. The weather has been better for you than what you'd hinted at the start of this series - though there seem to be scary looking clouds in the background a lot, it looks like you missed the rains on this day?

Thanks very much, it's the only way I could think of that demonstrated the illusion. I was just lucky that no one pulled up behind me whilst setting the camera up. I really liked Girvan, I was expecting to stay for 15-20 minutes but in the end I was there a lot longer. The rain and weather was worse than you're seeing on the video unfortunately, there were a few times I had to change my plans because it was so wet - don't like getting my camera out when it's raining as I've had a couple of occasions where condensation gets caught up in the lens and it's basically unusable for the rest of the day. I tended to continue driving when the rain came down - mind you for the most part it was showers and didn't cause me any major problems, however it's frustrating when you're on a tight schedule.

Thanks so much Kathy, that's extremely kind of you to say. I had a great day and to be honest I could have spent two days driving that section - I had to leave quite a few things out. 👍😃

Yes I would love to, there's a few more Scottish road trips I'd love to do including the North East 250, the Isle of Skye and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs. So much to see up there!

I would have to do that one in the high summer temperatures. I've heard some storied of their cold weather. I like warm, not cold and windy.

Ha I know how you feel, it can certainly get cold and windy in Scotland. Mind you, that's when all the midges come out!

Looks like you went on down to Electric Avenue! The golfing really aged you; but an incredible swing! Stay safe on the edge! We take back the requests for more risks lol. Yea, more beaches! Must have been hard to stay focused on the road with that gorgeous sunset.

He called me over once he'd taken the shot & asked me if I wanted a go. I asked him if he'd be happy with me filming it and he agreed. I borrowed his driver and hit a 450 yard power ball as straight as a gun barrel. Bounced on the fringe of the green, rolled 20 yards and dropped in the hole. Can you imagine how devastated I was when I realised I hasn't hit record. Still, the sunset cheered me up!

Alisa Craig looked spectacular from where I was - mysterious and raw. I would love to visit it but didn't really have time to investigate how to get there. I heard afterwards they do tour boats from Girvan. The shape of that island is truly EPIC.

Old Stumpy is a legend around those parts! Glad I was able to find him in the end. I loved the areas, I thought it was well worth a visit! Beautiful scenery and plenty to do. That boat ride sounds brutal, I'm not surprised it put you off. Thanks for watching!
