FINALLY!!! I was hoping so long to see you react to the worlds most amazing musical project. Arjen Lucassen is genius in all belongings. I follow him and his projects for more than twenty years now. The way he chooses the voices for the charcters of his stories is amazing - from the best well known singers to incredible talents... So I found Floor Jansen in 2000 by hearing her on Ayreons 'The Universal Migrator' - and followed all her steps as singer ever since. I'm very excited about the new album 'Transitus', which will be released this year - just by the few names of involved guests we know by now.

I take it you haven't watched the Ayreon Universe concert, but I love how he deploys Floor as the ultimate special effect at the end of songs. Respect where respect is due. :) Mike Mills is just great.

Valley of the Queens, with Floor AND Anneke

You made me happy :) ... I am ashamed myself, I listen to metal for like 25+ years, I know "all" the best bands our there. Including things like bands basically never reacted by YT people, and I mean amazing bands like (Rebellion, Celesty, Majesty, Rough Silk etc), but I heard for the first time Ayreon (this song) like 5 weeks ago. I absolutely loved it, and I thought "ok, one song is good, I ll check more"... since then I heard first 6 albums he made, watched all 3 live shows ... and I dont listen to anything else now! I fell in love with Arjen's universe! Songs like Castle Walls, And The Druids Turned To Stone, Day 16 - Looser, The Valley Of The Queens, etc etc etc... Give yourself a present, watch Electric Castle live, I mean full, you don't need to react, just watch, enjoy. Arjen deserves it! Can't wait for TRANSITUS

I think Arjen often gets better performances from the vocalists than they do for their own bands. He knows just how to use each one’s talents. Also, please check out more Mike Mills/ Toehider! My favorites are How Do Ghosts Work, and This Conversation is Over. Mike is also a multi-instrumentalist and plays all the parts on Toehider albums.

I'm not sure what you've already checked out but I hope you do more, this is a massive universe that goes to some strange places (Dragon on the Sea, Chaos, Nature's Dance, Voices, Love, Disclosure, Ride the Comet, all different, all absolute slay me any time I hear them.) but it's worth the journey

Arjen Anthony Lucassen is a genius Dutch composer of progressive rock/metal & he has been able to work with the best musicians and vocalists through-out his many projects, of which Ayreon is the biggest and most well known internationally. This particular song is a perfect example of what I said in the 1st sentence. P.S. Early "In Flames" was a melodeath band, but nowadays their music is more like melodic Groove Metal / Metalcore / Alternative Rock. If one wants to listen to great melodeath, I'd suggest bands like Amon Amarth (Sweden), Insomnium (Finland), Swallow the Sun (Finland) & Aephanemer (France).

Small correction. The human Equation IS part of the Ayreon universe. It is a simulation ran by the advanced race that cannot feel emotions (thus the last phrase of the album itself "Emotions.... I remember") in a quest to understand those emotions (Others say it may be linked to the dream sequencer though, as a sort of flashback).

Seriously you both make the best reactions, from the production to the emotion, these have everything. Would love more Ayreon reactions from you guys especially the live songs.

I'm a huge Ayreon fan and I love this song. That said, watching this with you two was like hearing the song for the first time with new eyes. Thank you. If you like the heavier side of Arjen, check out Star One. Similar concept but the two albums are focused on famouse scifi movies/books and are a bit more "metal". My favourite Star one song is "The eye of Ra", based on Stargate. Especially the live version has an AMAZING ending.

Toehider is awesome!!!! You must check them out. BTW. Ed Warby was the drummer of Gorefest. A killer death metal band from Holland.

Ah, yes, Hansi and Tobias (with their bands Blind Guardian and Avantasia) are the german metal communities pride and joy on the international metal stage. Or, two of the greatest ones. Also, this song and its lyrics have quite a different meaning when you know the other albums. It's the prequel to the 'Forever' which is the prequel to the very first album and the whole ayreon story in our world. You know exactly, how this whole journey will end, what will become of the human protagonists and TH-1, the only 'machine' that they kept. Haaa, I'm gonna go and listen to all the albums again.

Last year there was another live concert because of the 25 year anniversary of the album Into the electric castle. Simone Simons and Mark Janssen from Epica, Fish and many other musicians participated in this epic live concert. You’ll find a lot of songs on RU-vid. See channel of Arjen Anthony Lucassen and other channels. I love Ayreon. They are my third best band after Oink Floyd and Nightwish. There’s a new album coming out called Transitus. Joe Satriani is on it.

Arjen is a musical genius! And I can vouch that he does respond to emails. I sent him my thoughts on his "Human Equation" album after hearing it and was surprised when I got a personal response from him. Such a cool guy. I can't wait for the new Ayreon album due out this year.

Not my first, but my most favourite Ayreon Album was "The Theory of Everything". Among the usual horde of guest muscians (he had Keith Emerson contributing a synth solo!) there was Troy Donockley and Marco Hietala. I thought "how long before he gets the rest of Nightwish?"

I noticed the flute melody while you were talking was from "Valley of the Queens", another of his songs.

Fun thing with The Human Equation: while it's a self-contained story, it is actually part of the broader Ayreon universe as it takes place as a simulation within the Dream Sequencer (a core concept in the Universal Migrator albums, which are the end of the overall storyline of the Ayreon universe)

Good video but guys... "country guy"? The President is played by Mister Russel Allen, he's insane! Symphony X, Adrenaline Mob, Avantasia, Trans Siberian Orchestra,... The guys is one of the best rock/metal singers out there. Truly legendary!

If you like Mike Mills you should do a Toehider song as his music is almost the definition of underrated. All the songs have great messages but in a very tongue in cheek delivery. Humorous metal!

Ayreon is one of my favourite music entities! Your pronunciation of the name Arjen was spot on. Good job finding that rare instrumental version of Valley of the Queens! I don't think I've even heard it before. There is a new album in the making, and you can follow the announcements of all the guest singers and instrumentalists in a Guess-The-Guest competition on the Ayreon Facebook page. Blind Guardian is another of my all-time favourite bands. I fell in love with Hansi's voice from albums such as Imaginations from the Other Side, Nightfall in Middle-Earth, and Tales from the Twilight World. I agree about the similarities to Claus Meine's (Scorpions) vocal delivery.

I LOVE your reactions. Two bands really hit me hard Nightwish and Ayreon. A 20 year plus fan of both. Ayreon is just too hard to explain! ha! Every release is a huge concept. Some concepts span multiple release, like this one. They are always star studded releases. I have to be honest, I can't remember if I found Floor Jansen through After Forever or Ayreon first. Oh, and that "Country Rock" guy is the singer for Symphony X! Night quite country! LOL He also sings for Trans Siberean Orchestra, Adrenaline Mob, Allen-Lande, Allen-Olzon (as in Annette former NW singer) and other Ayreon projects like Star One. Superstar singer. However, this song alone is loaded with supoer star singers. Enjoy your journey into Ayreon. It's vast!

i love ayreon, his most easy-listening album is 'the final experiment' about a mediaeval minstral; floor appears on his album universal migrator part1 in the song 'my house on mars'. there is a beautifull life version of 'valley of the queens' with floor

Talking about how the Ayreon Universe evolved through the albums and the years, the sequence is the following one: 1) in 1995 Arjen created the first Ayreon album "The Final Experiment", talking about the story of a blind ministrel of the 6th century britain, named Ayreon, who receives from the future visions of humanity decline and tries to sing about these visions to save the world from its own downfall. The prologue of this album is that in the year 2084 a.d. (chosen by adding 100 years to 1984 referring to George Orwell's most famous novel) mankind has virtually destroyed itself, it's survival depends on the final experiment. 2) Ayreon's second album "Actual Fantasy" (1996) is the only Ayreon album not being a concept album, but it is a group of song each of them narrating story related to science-fiction themes or fantasy themes 3) in 1998, "Into the Electric Castle" talked about eight different characters each of them taken by a different historical age of the earth, that are brought to another dimension and are given a quest by a mysterious alien presence, to go through this unknown land to find the electric castle and try to survive it to go back home. It is the first album to talk about the alien race named "forever", but this seems to be a completely different story from the first two albums 4) in 2000 "Universal Migrator" an album split in two different parts, each of the released as a unique album [pt1: the Dream Sequencer] and [pt2: flight of the migrator]. This is the first album to make clear that all the stories told by "The Final Experiment" and "Into the Electric Castle" are connected to create a bigger picture, a real "Ayreon Universe" 5) in 2004 "The Human Equation", that seems to be disconnected by the "Ayreon Universe" big picture, until the last 30 seconds of the last song, in which it is revealed that the story developed all through the album is a program run by the Forever race to try to solve "The Human Equation" in order to save us and them from the final catastrophe. 6) in 2008 there are two events: --> a) the album 01011001 (binary code for the letter "Y") is declared by Arjen to be the final chapter of the "Forever race saga" and reveals that the Forever alien race is the human race ancestor arrived from another planet after a global catastrophe and they are guiding our evolution from the dawn of human race until now to make us save them from their destiny --> b) the best of "Timeline" contains a poster describing how all the album related to the "Forever Saga" are connected and their own part in the "Ayreon Universe big picture", and contains also a new song "Epilogue: The Memory Remains" that is the final epilogue of the "Forever Saga" 7) in 2013 the album "The Theory of Everything" is the first Ayreon concept album completely disconnected by the "Forever Saga" telling about the research of a father and his son of the theory of everything 8) in 2017 with the album "The Source" Arjen returns to his beloved "Forever race" characters, telling us the prequel of the Forever Saga, explaining us where they lived, what was the extinguishing event they have to face, what caused that event, and how the Forever race faced it. 9) in 2020 a new Ayreon album will be released with the title "Transitus" and it will be a complete different story, that will be set on earth in the 19th century, and it will be his second concept album separated by the forever saga. Arjen also released a lot of other music throughout the years, with many side-projects as "Ambeon", "Star One", "Guilt Machine", "Stream of Passion" , "The Gentle Storm" and his own solo albums. When he creates new music, he creates music, words, story and everything else and when he feels the real mood of what he's creating, he decides if the following creation will be an Ayreon album, another of his own existing side-projects, or a complete new side-project. I hope to have helped you going through the complex and wonderful world of Arjen Anthony Lucassen's music :)

Great reaction. A few thoughts: Frist off, great research. Arjen has some "side-projects" really worth checking out: Star One (There I discovered Floor some 15 years ago when she was singing backing vocals with her sister), Stream of Passion (with the most underrated Marcela Bovio. They continued as a proper band without Arjen and did some geeat albums), The Gentle Storm (with Anneke van Giersbergen), Amberon, The Guilt Machine.... So A LOT to dig in. Arjen has a great sense of how to place singers to his characters and melodies. Plus he can laugh about himself and doesn't take himself too seriously. The Ayreon Universe show is a real treasure chest.

I was there at Ayreon Universe and saw this masterpiece live. I could strongly recommend "Valley of the queens" from the live show. Sista will cry definitely! ;) Also Comatose, Day 16: Betrayal , Druids turn to stone (live) and so much from his last live-show "Into the electric castle" is absolutely mesmerizing. I strongly recommend to watch the docus and specials about Arjen - he's the most humble and skilled musician I now!

Love Arjen and everything he does. HUGE fan of Ayreon! You should check out a series of fan-made Ayreon videos animated with Lego characters. It is awesome and hilarious and it got approval from Arjen.

Quite a journey, this song is. I wanna forward this to Haley Alexis (here on YT): an american girl, who spent some years in Germany. Actually, Arjen has a new album on start: "Transitus". From what I've heard so far, it's gonna be epic. Again. Have to edit this for a sidenote: Michael Mills singing the part of the machine. (And Arjen stating, that Michael created this section of the song all by himself: (maybe it was in the lyrics, haha!) the final word in this is: "ONE" Now, I'm a technical nerd. In the the digital world, "zero" = 5 Volts. "one" = ground. "ground voltage" equals "no energy" Just my idea, about why this last spoken word: "One" might have a meaning.

Arjen reminds me bit of my cousin we lost few years ago. he also was multi-instrumentalist and liked to be with himself, but still connected, i am tearing up so now i am just going to listen.

FYI the 01s are binary code for ASCII computer characters and they spell 'trust TH1', which is the name of AI computer in the story. 😀
