Each year the ancient city of Ayutthaya in Thailand hosts a relay race. The UNESCO listed World Heritage Site is a perfect backdrop for the Krungsri Ayutthaya Kizuna Ekiden.
In 2019 around 2,000 runners took part in the race, which celebrates the relationship between Thailand and Japan. Many Thai and Japanese companies submit teams and the whole event has a carnival atmosphere.
Ekiden is a type of long-distance Japanese relay race, where teams hand over a cloth sash called a Kizuna to each runner at changeover time.
