To be fair to Azazel, the Mishima blood is kinda op. Heihachi has zero traces of the devil gene and has repeatedly taken on both true devil kazuya, Akuma, and devil KAZUMI Kazuya has the devil gen and MISHIMA Blood stacked on top of each other. He's kinda cracked

Just keep in mind, Azazel was the only final boss that didn't get to be in Tag 2. The devs said "nah" to the possibility of an Azazel-True Ogre Team up.

Jin's nightmares came from Jinpachi's resurfacing and corruption in Hon'Maru. I think that Kazuya or Jin’s Devil Gene isn’t really gone, it might be something similar to Jin losing almost of his devil energy in chapter 2 so in other words, they’re just not gonna be able to tap into their devil forms temporarily.

I can explain the 50% stuff of Kazuya saying in Tekken 4. You see by that time the lore wasn't devil gene but the devil himself, because Kazuya would have made a pact with the devil and when Kazuya died the devil tried to get to Jin, but due to Jun's power he only was able to reach Jin after she disappeared (at that time we thought that she died but technically we never had any confirmation or body...), which we can see when Jin gets his famous tattoo. And on that dialogue on Tekken 4 we learn that only half of the devil went to Jin which is why he is after Jin on 4 to get it back however on that moment Kazuya is able to overpower the Devil and make the Devil a part of himself. But that eventually changed to devil gene which could potentially still be that Kazuya had made a pact with the devil and Jin had a devil gene because he is Kazuya son but T6 with Azazel and T7 with Kazumi set it as genetics. Now if that means that on each pearson with the devil gene they have a entity that is Azazel or the Devil on them is pretty weird to know so far. And even why the Kazama bloodline has angelic or purification energy to nullify that. Specially when you consider Dragunov non canon ending on T5 DR where we see they trying to extract something out of Jin into a tube - which by the time we could try to logically explain that it was the half of the Devil that was on Jin but that is no longer the case since genetics.

I’ve always imagined Azazel as this entity that can take on many forms, as he’s basically an entity who’s physical form is what he makes. Is this true? No, but this is how I’d write him, not a perfect villain, while still being intriguing compared to what we have in canon.

I don't get why Azazel's even in this game, Jin still has the devil mark at the end. Kazuya still has dark power elcetric attacks, I doubt they have their devil gene cured. I mean it's already established that Kazuya in Tekken 7, yes the game literally before, had true devil Kazuya as an adaptable form. Azazel serves no narrative purpose, and Kazuya's cool ass devil design was swapped for a power ranger villain outfit to fight what was imo a pretty cool Angel Jin.

Maybe Azazel is weak because he has more than one descendant alive (at least three: Kazuya Jin and Reina), same rules as kazuya “losing” a bit of himself

In Azazel's defense, he was at his prime in Tekken 6, but since he was physically destroyed by Jin and was sealed up by Zafina, just go be released a year or two by Kazuya, he was strong, but Kazuya surpassed him due to how stronger he's gotten. Edit: the whole part of Kazuya gor possessed by Devil out of nowhere got me laughing and scared too when i first seen that in Tekken 4. If i was in Heihachi's situation seeing my evil son gotten possessed out of nowhere, i would be scared too lol

Wasn't there a mention that the devil gene's powers are as strong as your desire? The way I saw it, it's because jin and kazuya both have stronger desires/will. They both could overpower the originator or the devil gene. Or absorb in kazuya's case. At it this made sense to me. And Azazel is just a plot point anyway. At least he wasn't a one, done and forgotten plot point.

Azazel, the Devil Gene progenitor made short work of by Lars, Jin and Kazuya. Keep in mind that both Jin and Kazuya have their devil genes (though both are not at full power) yet both of them are also disciplined in martial arts.

For those who don’t know its insinuated by the japanese painting at the end of act one that the Mishima been around since the devil and have been combatting it you have to realize the m cell is almost as strong as the devil gene itself and kaz has both making him able to fight azazel. That lightning punch to azazel punch probably was mixture of that and lazer

People forget the subtle fact that Mishimas are supposed to be descendants of the storm and thunder God Raijin. Is implied in lots of their attacks, the hair, the electric powers the have etc... Plus demons in shintoism are not all powerful, same as gods, they can be killed. They are more powerfull that humans tho, but not invincible and Japan loves stories about killing gods and demons. So Mishimas been able to handle Azazel is not that far fetched, knowing that the probably have the blood of a god anyway lol Jun almost killed Ogre, the god of fighting. She was badly injured yes, but she weaked him a lot, we don´t know form where the Kazama clan came from, but they can surpress devils and evil entities with not much effort. That´s why Jin could beat Kaz with angel powers. It was his half Kazama blood too.

My thoughts exactly. If you wanted to reintroduced Azazel in 8 only to get rid of him immediately, you could at least bring the tag mechanic back for 1 fight where you play as Claudio & Yoshimitsu to weaken him & then have Kazuya swoop in at the last minute to play his part.

You see, I was playing a Character Episode of Yoshimitsu and ran into Azazel. I was unaware that he was even in the game and all my trauma came rushing through. I always play these games on Ultra Hard and he's just cancer. 2nd hardest final for me, 1st being that stupid grandpa Jinpachi😡

While I do still like the whole idea of the Devil Gene I do prefer when the story was Kazuya made a pack with the Devil. It being retconned to being a gene trait is still cool cause outside of like 2 moments it makes sense still and those moments are when you seen Jin get branded in one of the Tekken 3 openings and Kazuya’s comment about losing half himself in Tekken 4. I wish they brought back the Tag 1 design for Devil Kazuya that was peak.

Azazel was fooled twice. First Azazel thought it convinced Jin and it seems that way when he started the war in Tekken 6. So, after Azazel reveal itself and tried to side with Jin, Jin attacked and “killed” Azazel. Azazel survived from the fight against Jin. In Tekken 8, it was summoned by Kazuya. Azazel wish to reward him and allow him to be the servant. Kazuya refused as he only summoned it to take its powers for himself. Azazel isnt really bright for someone who is the main devil itself.

I believe that the Devil gene can be trained like a muscle. That’s why Kaz could eventually defeat Azazel even if he only had half his Devil gene, he’d been using his in combat to the point he could utilize it in full effortlessly on command by 8.

The devil gene is little more than a symbol to Jin and Kazuya. A curse to be exorcised and a birthright to be fulfilled, but neither of them feel particularly strongly about it's destruction in the end.

I liked his and Jinpachi's designs back then. Both reminded me of Doomsday from DC comics. At least Jinpachi losing to Jin made sense. The latter both beat Kazuya and Heihachi. Its more charitable to look at him like a paitent 0 / first person to ever contract a disseas. I'd also argue (if i was being charitable to Az) that he isn't "strong" physically but rather hes resilient like a brain leach or some shit that spreads like a hive mind virus, it would make more sense if his power came from peoples "belief" in him.
