This video was amazing, my favorite part was the battle between bane and azbat. The music and tone fits the whole battle. I also liked when bane was bleeding and defeated, you looked back at the damage he caused to not only Bruce but the people who stuck with him. Great work as always!!!!
While DC did replace Bruce with Jean Paul they at least they had plans to bring Bruce back and simply did it to shake up the status quo for a bit. You hear that clone saga?!
No, they didn't have any plans to bring Bruce at that time. Fans outcry of Jean-Paul and BTAS caused DC to rethink their plans to replace Bruce as Batman believing having a darker Batman would sell but they made bad mistake doing it.
@@GothamKnight84661 oh really, then why did the storyline that immediately followed Jean Paul defeating bane titled “knights quest” I think Bruce was being referred to with that.
Jean-Paul’s Batman was an interesting parallel to Bruce in many ways. You’re right that his characterization often depended on the needs of the story, but I think he did have some interesting character moments while wearing the cape and cowl. Alan Grant’s issues seemed to be more sympathetic towards him than Dixon and Moench’s, from what I remember.
I remember the creators saying that they were worried that people might like Azrael more than the original Batman, so they deliberately changed him up to make him less likable and more of an arrogant, murderous nut.
This is my favorite era of Batman ever. It needs to be a 2 part animated movie, or the plot of an entire series of television. So many iconic moments, and all of the characters are in their most iconic incarnations. Love the blue and gray costume, and I've been in love with the Azbats suit since I was a kid.
He's my absolute favorite as well. Jim Aparo's work always brought a moody atmosphere to whatever story was being told. And his Batman looked really cool.
Jim Aparo was my favorite Batman artist of all time, there have been some mighty fine Batman artist through the ages but Jim always goes to the top of the list for me.
I think that I never felt so satisfy since I read comics when Jean Paul Valley destroys Bane. Seeing Bane running away because he is scared. I think Knight fall is one of the best serie and most brutal and violent of Batman era in my opinion. Thanks for the video !
I deeply love Jean-Paul Valley as Batman: he was amoral, brutal and compassionless. But those traits are also the reason Valley never truly deserved the mantle, not only because neither he nor Bruce knew each other at all, but he was completely consumed by the very cult he belonged to. Like I told you in your video about Sword of Azrael, I deeply resent creators and executives are desperately trying to make Bruce behave more like Valley.
I think Azbats was probably the best replacement character that came out of these 90s DC's events, however, only because he becomes his own character afterwards.
@@BrosephComrade Technically, Steel didn't replaced Superman; he was inspired by him, tho. As for Superboy... To be honest, I don't know or care much about him.
One of my favorite differences between the comics and the Knightfall novelization by Denny O"neil is how Bane breaks Batman in front of 3 homeless people instead of the entire city. So when confronts the criminals underworld no one knows what he is talking about, Bane goes berserk and they let him take over anyways.
Wow! Knightfall was worth the wait. Y'know, I forgot the fight on the train car in Begins was inspired by Batman 500. "I won't save you" does kinda feel more like something AzBats would say, not Bruce.
Amazing! Salazar Knight, you are a great artist. Thank you for your work and the time invested in your knowledge of Batman. You are the curator of the library of Batman's ecency. I wish you could continue with your channel in Spanish. "Arkham Komics"
I always thought of the Two-Face story as something that would've been okay on it's own, but it really interrupted the flow of things at the time that they showed it and that the main reason it was there might've been that they forgot to do anything with Two-Face in the story proper but that he also had escaped from Arkham. This video does provide another way of looking at it though.
Knightfall is awesome but Reign of the Supermen is very good too (and I'm not precisely a Superman fan). Death of Supes is OK but inferior, I find Funeral for a Friend more interesting
Jean-Paul Valley as the New Batman draws paralellism with Ben Reilly as the new Spider-man during the Clone Saga. Both represent the violent period of the 90s. Futhermore, the fan backlash made both character change despite the original plan. In my case I believe the replacement was necessary for people to UNDERSTAND what they really liked about Batman. Futhermore, it provided a change of fresh air for the cape crusader in order to do not make him stale. PD: 8:12 I prefer BATZRAEL PD2: 1:52 This is Nocturna theme song for me after I watched your Bronze Bat video.
I liked Ben Reilley, Parallax, Azbats..... they weren't changes just for the sake of corporate change, and where telling great epic stories. Great era of comics. I was actually mad when they changed course in the clone saga. What was the original plan for Knightfall? What were they forced to change?
I'm not sure if this was supposed to be coincidence or not, but I noticed you uploaded this video at 6:06 CTZ, and the closest to the number 666 (at least in time) is 6:06. Also, you got the picture of Bane from Detective Comics #666. I may be overthinking, but I just thought that was too much of a coincidence.
Azbats would be better received back then if his design was better. It just reeks of forced "coolness", with all the new flashy elements stacked on top of each other. He looked like an action figure at the end of toylines life, when usually gimmicks outweigh the proper design.
I guess I'm in the minority but I loved the JPV Batman (I find the term Azbats insulting). The costume was amazing (this version, the Knighrsend version less so) and the concept of the system was so cool (he could fight FYI this video and the Knightsend one both shortchange his combat abilities for some reason). I was disappointed in the direction Knightsend took him and was happy with the follow up series until the stupid human animal hybrid nonsense. I wish to this day to see the character and design return.
*His career ALMOST came to an end. Bruce eventually came back, defeating the delusional Azrael (Jean-Paul Valley) and takes back his mantle as the one true BATMAN. The Dark Knight of Gotham.
I have the whole volume of Azreal's time as batman. I did not enjoy it. I was looking for volume 1 where his back is broken or 3 when Bruce trains with Shiva regaining his skills.
you can't replace iconic characters, and its dumber to even try, it's like buying McDonald's franchise and changing the name, why would you do it lmao looking back this comic was trash, and Bane is a trash character. A boy born in a prison could never come up with a plan to beat Batman, he would be mentally underdeveloped, releasing all the criminals for Arkham was a good plot point but it was already done prior, and Bane figuring out who Batman is by seeing Bruce Wayne move is some of the laziest writing ever done. Batman getting into a fist fight with Bane on his own turf when he knows he is exhausted is something Batman wouldn't do, he has his entire arsenal in the batcave, and would've found some kind of way to neutralize him. Also Batman making a legit mental case his replacement is a decision he would never make and makes zero sense, especially since Jean Paul Valley was a relatively new character.
Really, I get the clone saga but what about Kraven's Last Hunt, Death of Jean Dewolff, and Maximum Carnage? I've heard good things about those stories.
@@GothamKnight84661 I mean a few of them, but I forgot about what happened in them. It's been like 2 years since I last read them, you know what I mean?
