+Living For Tony & Kerry Olitz Scandal perhaps, but i chalk that up to the exuberance of youth. she's definitely got a decent head on her shoulders. i think she'll grow to be more graceful with age.
Blake Gildaphish Yea i was saying white celebrities try to silence her and black men who hate there own dating only white woman....but she speaks the truth...
"I just feel like for centuries and centuries and centuries black people have been painted to be these animals and just be these crazy people when we are really not." Rapper Azealia Banks speaks to Channel 4 News about the "appropriation" of black culture by white people, politics and her music.
Christer The Viking Gustafsson how fucking dare you. Your statement is so ignorant and immature. Not all black ppl are like that. What race are you? Cause you have no right to talk about another ethnic community
She does not mind white rappers if you ack like your self and not black she wants ppl to be who they are and be proud of that but what ppl hear is angry black woman. Just like the elvis song "you ain't nothing but" that song was written by a black woman
Dan Zabo that is such typical ignorant behavior, as if there aren't white men who are in jail or who can't support a family or who don't commit violent acts! If you did a little research you'd see that there are more Caucasian men and women imprisoned than any other race, just because it's not televised doesn't mean they don't attribute to the crime and fatherless people in America. So know your people before talk about anyone else's. Thank you
It’s so true though. In America it’s often time not even about race anymore, it’s more about class, wealth and access to resources. I live and work in a “hood” and I see troubled people of all races and ethnicities just fighting amongst themselves. Rich blacks and poor blacks have vastly different lives and experiences. Same goes for whites. It’s about class and money.
+Medina Sod There's a difference between an artist expressing a controversial opinion in an interview and a U.S. presidential candidate expressing a controversial opinion in his official campaign.
Simple Individual Chill out. You shouldn't get so mad over a little fucking comment. She liked what she said, oh well. Move on with yourself. Lol people these days
DesignzRUs1 Because she's allowing ignorant racist people like her to keep spitting horse shit by being ok with whatever stupidity they come up with just because you like her music. That's like the people who defend Charles Mason because they liked his music.
The things she said in those 8 minutes in the video are just priceless and has so much truth to it. She really seems like an intelligent woman who understands her craft and the history of her art.
@@joshuamaher614white americans latching onto minority cultures and often profiting off of them and insisting on confusing the origin so the appropriation multiplies over and over again
What she's trying to say is she's tired of the white race being praised for their black assets. For instance, white culture want fuller lips and are praised for it, but black women have had fuller lips for centuries, and was never recognized for it. Black cultures and it's not only Black Cultures that are pushed under the rug, but what she's trying to say is that we've recognized it and it's tiring. What happened to world peace?
I don't think the interviewer understood her arguments at all. If you don't have that historical background it's probably hard to understand because the arguments she made were pretty complex.
Beautiful Unicorn you can use it. just add something to it and don't pretend you created it, which is what whites have historically done to black cultural creations. And it seems that blacks are the only ones that this happens with. They not only appropriate black culture, but then they also erase the black image from their own cultural creations by imitating blacks and ridiculing blacks for it at the same time. So the fetishization/caricaturization and ridicule(sometimes in the form of minstrelsy) and imitation and (final) erasure are two sides of the same coin.
the question you're asking is even the wrong question.look if you are in denial about this phenomenon there is nothing I can say that would help you understand it. so I won't even bother explaining these things to you. you'll just have to do the research on your own.
the fact that you think it hasn't is just indicative of how little I could possibly tell you to say otherwise. You're not interested in learning. you're just interested in arguing with a black person online to try and affirm your own ideas about your own superiority. like do you see how belligerent you come off? I digress. I just don't care to do all that with you. not today.
+BAP Jones no we're just waiting for you to get some relativity,,,,you created hip hop,,,,now..where the FUCK do you think every other fucking single thing you see around you came from???????? appropriating culture my fucking ass,,,go back to africa with your animal fur clothes and no PCs or wifi and talk to me about culture vultures then
great interview, though too brief. He's not afraid to push or ask a tough question, and she was calm, warm, and articulate with her answers. People aren't going to agree with everything, but it goes a long way to dismiss the "troll" accusations, plus it's an interesting look at what drives one of the most creative women in pop today.
There is appropriation of black culture. What we do and create its popular amongst ourselves but when some white person does it it becomes "OMG, MILEY HAS REALLY BROUGTH ON THE NEW TWERKING TREND, ALL GIRLS LOVE TO TWERK NOW" when black woman, who twerk better than white girls hwve been twerking since the 80s and have actual juicy asses to make it worth the watch. Or when Kendall had the mini box braids in her hair and some magazine posted " Kendall, bring bold braids to a epic new level" when different braids style were already being accomplished by black woman and girls for centuries. It sounds silly to claim such trivial things like these but it's the principal and the point of that some white people are actually clueless when it comes to other culture. If it's not something they see themeselves doing then it doesn't matter or they're just oblivious to it. But if you call them out on it they look confused and say you're pullong the race card. same thing with Iggy, reason why I don't like her is NOT because she's white but because she doesn't come off as genuine and respectful to art that is black. But it's more so not with her but with The Media (white media) gassing her up to be this next big thing when she barely had an album out. This's bitch had no album out and Forbes was already calling her the best, and the queen of rap when LYRCIALLY IGGY SUCKS COMAPRED TO NICKI AND Azealia Banks. Nicki Minaj came out around 2009 but she's wasn't NICKI MINAJ until 2011 2012. Iggy comes out and the media is already giving this girl alcolades the bitch didn't even have nor worked for. I get it, IGGY Azealia is like a gift to white people and that's ok. As human beings you flock to the person who looks more like you. But the some white people, amd the media (white media) need to stop appropriating our culture and our very being and trying to sell it to the world as if your favorite white hip hop, R&B, soul artist are the prime examples and the catalyst for shit we've been doing and still do and obviosuly do better.
EVERYBODY'S culture is appropriated. She is wearing a wig in this very interview to emulate hair she doesn't have. Every day we black people go to school for jobs and work at jobs that they or their ancestors DID NOT INVENT. And HipHop would not even be what it is today if it had not started in America so really it is everybody's culture. Hiphop is written in ENGLISH language and samples WHITE musician's music recorded by machines created by WHITE PEOPLE. We didn't create the recording studio..whites did..so if it wasn't for them NOBODY would be able to record music. Whites buy the music in higher volumes than blacks as well. My point is that blacks and whites had to work together to make HipHop happen. Then banks criticizes Iggy for doing the SAME thing Nicki does. Nicki is hyper sexualized (Anaconda!!!!) and displays several characters. Banks is posing for PLAYBOY but says that Iggy is being hyper sexual??? Iggy is emulating YOU BLACK WOMEN...Lil Kim, Gangsta Boo, Nicki Minaj, Foxxy Brown...all these are black women who sold sex to get a record deal. Iggy followed the black female rapper blueprint. Last time I checked Iggy has no plans to pose nude for the world to see. This chick is the BIGGEST hypocrite in the world!!!!! She is SUPER insecure about a lot of s h i t that means nothing.
Dontay Davis I don't think whites crated everything but I do know that that a lot of what they did create we are using to the fullest. I know why the average black woman puts weave in their hair...I get that and I do not judge them. But AZAELIA BANKS doesn't get a pass and here is why: she is so aware and so pro black then why in the HELL would you CONTINUE TO PERPETUATE THESE "EUROCENTRIC STANDARDS"?????????????????????????????? Why would you still look like MASSA?????? Why would you not encourage young black girls to go natural to discontinue this brainwashing???? THAT IS HYPOCRISY "She said she tired of mediocre white coming in hip hop and selling when some great blacks can not." Dude are you not aware of the bullshit music that comes from BLACK PEOPLE????? Migos, Bobby Schurda, Waka Flaka, Trinidad James etc. Those are the wack ass artists that have allowed other wack artists to have a shot in the first place. Hiphop SUCKS and its been that way loooooong before Iggy. Who is ridiculing black women for having nice bodies/features??? What station does that come on bc I want to watch it. They haven't done that n YEARS. Dude you are simping for a hypocrite that plays pro black but FUCKS/SUCKS WHITE DUDES. Jazz and Rock are white now bc WE LEFT. You need to get mad at BLACK PEOPLE for abandoning their OWN CRAFT. Nobody told us we couldn't make that type of music anymore!!!!! You should have kept your comments to yourself bc they don't make much sense.
Weaves were a necessity that became a style. Just like soul food, sagging pants, crowns(gold and platinum teeth), and etc. So now since she been wearing weaves since she was young, she's wearing it for style and also I'm sure theirs some internalized racism. Also, mediocre black music is not getting put up for awards and being called the queen or king of hip hop that's the difference come on now don't play dumb. Also, come on so you telling me there are all good images of black women on tv or the media. If there are black women on tv they are most likely bi-racial or light skinned. Come on be real now. Don't act like you having heard the messages that black women or the least attractive women. Come on now get real. Also, people left jazz and rock n roll because of the same situation that's happening now. Mediocre white music came along and ran rampant in jazz and rock. Stations played white music more and they were stealing black songs. Man, this is simple shit that you can read up on.
I aint agreeing with everything she says... but she kinda has a point.. a lot of black women naturally have curves. black men loved it. but it was seen as out of shape n a eyesaw to the majority of white ppl. along comes kim K & iggy azealia with these bodies and all of a sudden its a mainstream trend. to a point where "all about that bass" (a song which talks about having a phat ass) becomes a #1 hit. Big lips were seen as ugly, until angelina jolie comes along and rich women started filling their lips with shit to have big lips. recently zendaya coleman was ridiculed live on air because of her dreadlocks "i bet she smells like weed" one grammy host said... kylie jenner went and got a shit excuse of dreadlocks sewn onto her head and magazines called it "edgy and new". as if black people hadnt been getting turned away from good opportunities for the same hair. not everything she says is right but she makes some sense
The responses to this interview just go to show that no matter "nicely" people talk about issues like race, it makes no difference. She's so calm in this interview(because this is one of the rare times people aren't baiting to antagonize her) and people are still perceiving so much hostility from her.
When I first started hearing of Azealia I really did not like her. I thought her music was overrated and she was just gaining a following through twitter shade. But after listening to her interviews and getting some insight into her mind and listening to her music again, she's actually one of my favorite artists. She has some insightful things to say and is VERY underrated. If people can get past the shock value and their own mindsets, they'll see that she's very smart and has a lot of truth to spill when it comes to the state of America, our view on Black culture, and more than just a typical artist. I really hope she gets the recognition she deserves.
What a beautiful soul, seriously she's an amazing woman. Shame she never got to be a huge household name, could be because she was a tough, black woman. She was insanely talented and extremely enlighten. She was as meticulous and relatable as could be in this interview. So intelligent and quick, a personality like her's should be admire not demonized. Wish her the best in everything, because its tough to be a honest and straightforward woman. Always would have a person like this's back and will listen to her realist points that she is so capable of vocalizing.
@nextup305 you have to look past it. We're talking about preservation of our culture vs your fragile feelings. I PROMISE YOU I care nothing of your feelings
She's not racist, she just wants to preserve whats left of her culture. Yeah, she says white rappers shouldn't act black, but that's because they're characterizing black culture and making it theirs. She has a good point of view on equality, and you'd understand if you just don't be too narrow-minded about these problems.
She raises some interesting points about cultural appropriation and the stigma felt by a minority verses the fetishisation enjoyed by the empowered majority over the same traits. Yet I can't agree with her over her desire to segregate Black culture from the rest of the world, which for the most part is governed by White culture. To me culture is an ideal; a coalescence of feelings that can't be herded, it bleeds into people crosses all walks of life. I'd much rather we as a species give Black culture its due and let it blend into whatever it will become in the future.
ASM _ First of all, this is not real capitalism in its ideological sense, artist are getting robbed. Second of all, this is not just an issue of what you call "capitalism". White supremacy ensures that white people own the record labels and white supremacy means that a white mediocre "rapper" like Iggy Azalea can sell double to what black rappers can. Britain and the USA were built on the enslavement of black people and the robbery of African countries, while installing an ideology of white supremacy. What do you mean you don't owe us anything??? FOH
I feel very disconnected from what Banks is saying. Perhaps it's because I'm white and English, but I personally don't see myself as living as a white person, and those types of ideas never pop into my head. All I hear is Banks saying white people are doing this, and white people are doing that. I'm white, but I don't give a shit about what anything she's saying nor am I stealing black culture. I feel that she comes off as very ignorant in that respect and by labeling all white people with the same brush, she's just going to push white people away from her points of view and music. If she just separated the race issue from her music and focused on social issues, I would be in agreement with her. It feels to me that she's upset about "white appropriation" because Iggy Azalea has sold more records than her, not solely because black people are disadvantaged. By bringing up shitty pop feuds that nobody really should care about, she's just trivializing the issue.
***** You said it in your first sentence. You're white, meaning your privilege is invisible to you. As a white person you can say things like "I don't see colour" because you don't have to go through the dominant society constantly treating you like a second class citizen, whilst the police kills your children. We been trying to assimilate for centuries and nothing much has changed. So please can you do us the favour of saving your bullshit for yourself. We need to look out for the interest of our own people just like other groups do instead of letting other people to profit from our culture.
ASM _ Yes, that's the point. Black people invented rock, blues, jazz, classical music, r&b, hip hop among many other genres. Yet we don't profit from them. And most of them have been or are in the process of being apropiated. This has to stop.
Who is this dude interviewing her? She is making all the points in the world. Do your thing Azealia, cuz I feel you on this. Self-preservation is key, WE made R&B, Soul, Rock and Roll, and Hip - Hop. So long as that's recognized and understood, we good.
U just HAVE to love Azaelia Banks. Every word that she says is on point. My grandma always tells me about when her uncle used to work on a ship back in the days, there were so many different races, ethnicities and cultures there. But people who he found the most honest and nice and good were Black people. Not American white, not European white, but Black people. And that's true. ❤️
This reporter is very antagonistic style. he counteracted all of her ideas and probably had some big wig producer egging him on in his ears because they wanted an Azelia Banks meltdown exclusive.
Really disliked his comment when regarding Azealia's feminism; suggesting that because she's a playboy model she is no longer a feminist. Being a feminist means equal rights for all. That includes supporting women that wear full body garbs to women that only wear bikinis or nothing at all. It's support and RESPECT for everyone.
Say what you want about her, but most of the points she makes are valid, and the conversation has never been more relevant. The same people calling her out about being vocal on #blacklivesmatter are the same people currently with a black square on their instagram, make it make sense 🤨🤔
If an aborigine from Australia came to the US and launched a country music career with the whole grammar and twang and style of singing like Kenny Rogers, would that pass as authentic or as a parody of white culture???..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Then why is it okay when you guys do it??
Doer231 Racist means you engage in discriminatory practices based on race, and that you believe a race to be superior to another, Azealia does neither of those so she is not a racist. She told the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Its pretty weak to resort to calling someone a racist just because the truth's she states about race, make you uncomfortable
kendolldamon oh, i didn't realise the p-c brigade had turned up. So, when azealia says about white people, in this video.... "you can come to my show but you can't do what i do".... does that not fit perfectly into that definition you just copied from a dictionary? superiority over race? I've got nothing else to say here, none of us have anything to agree about, we see things totally different.
***** Not all cultures come from black culture. And the ones that do that get plagiarised and re-branded like country music and rock&roll evolve into sub-genres unto themselves. You missed my whole point dummy. Let me break it down for you in a simpler way; If I, a black man from Nairobi Kenya, who's never been to the US suddenly decides to move to Texas and launch a Country Music career, singing with that old folk country twang blatantly trying to sound like I grew up in Mississippi or somewhere like that, would I be seen as authentic or as a parody/imitation of country music? Would I get nominated for a Country Music award or some shit like that? THINK! Iggy is an Australian chick that tries to sound like she grew up in Harlem. She took all the stereotypical attributes of what might be regarded as a "ratchet" black chick and uses them as part of her act. Do you get my point now, or will that also go over your head?
You're talking about Keith Urban, right? One of the most successful country artists of out generation. Who incidentally, no white people have a problem with. It's really so much more simple than that, Azealia is just a disgusting racist. The end
"Truly be a part of it" it means, don't take advantage of black or any culture without respecting and knowing the true struggles of the. "Don't be a caricature"
I think behaviors are learned. I think Azealia is so strong for being who she is, and not changing with all these cameras in her face. I love her music. I love her character. I agree that there are so many wrongs with this country, and it's up to us to try to make it right in our life times. Getting the discussion started is the first step. You are strong, you are beautiful, and you are using your powerful voice for all the right reasons. Love you!
+Stace I wanted to like her. Loved '212' and other bits. She has sometimes talked a lot of sense. She has talent, which she's pissed up the wall to become a Twitter troll. It's a shame you write you "love her character" after what she said about Zayn Malick though. Really? That was simply unforgiveable. RIP her career.
aerialkate yah i agree she has made some young comments. i think shes amazingly talented. loved 212. i always say, im thankful that technology hadnt advanced this far when i was a teen/20s. omg the shit i said and did! mortifying. azealia has a strong point of view. she talks about things others dont. and i think every voice in a conversation is important. she feels this way. why does she feel this way. thats the root of it. why. shes growing and developing, and im excited to see what she makes of herself. LOVE LOVE LOVE AZEALIA
She is so right. I'm getting sick of the Culture Vultures too. It's not just hiphop either it's the way we dress the way we walk the way we talk the way we cut our hair, the mimicry has gone above and far beyond pathetic. Get off our fkng dks. You wanna hate us and be us at the same time.
'We don't want you in, the same we you didn't want us in.' Azealia Banks did you just say that you want to be racist the same way the majority of white people used to be racist? You're arguing that you're not a racist but contradict yourself by saying that the way races make music should be segregated and different and individual to that particular race. You are the modern racist - a biggoted and twisted girl who beleives that black and white people cannot share the same traits. You say we HAVE to segregate. You sicken me.
Y'all do realize that when she says "white people" or "all white people", she doesn't literally mean ALL white people. If you don't appropriate black culture (or any other culture for that matter) than what she says doesn't apply to you. She's talking about the people that do appropriate cultures. But I do agree that sometimes she can go a little overboard, but that's just because she wants more people to listen to what she's saying, so y'all can get educated. And not y'all saying that she's being a hypocrite because of her wearing weave/wigs lmao. Y'all honestly sound so dumb and ignorant when you say things like that. Because we all know that if Azealia wouldn't wear wigs or weave, and kept her hair natural, everybody would be clowning her. A lot of black people wear weave and wigs, because society makes us feel like if we don't have perfect, smooth, soft hair, than were ugly. She's only 23 and she has made a name for herself. No matter how much you dislike her, you cannot deny that she has talent, because not many people can spit like her. She's a true rapper who's pushing down boundaries.
EVERYBODY'S culture is assimilated ( I initially thought appropriate and assimilate where the same). She is wearing a wig in this very interview to emulate hair she doesn't have. Every day we black people go to school for jobs and work at jobs that our ancestors DID NOT INVENT. And HipHop would not even be what it is today if it had not started in America so really it is everybody's culture. Hiphop is written in ENGLISH language and samples WHITE musician's music recorded by machines created by WHITE PEOPLE. Last time I checked Iggy has no plans to pose nude for the world to see. This chick is the BIGGEST hypocrite in the world!!!!! She is SUPER insecure about a lot of s h i t that means nothing.
dior bailey Hip - Hop sprang from the impoverished black and Latino projects of New York City. White people had no hand creating Hip Hop's culture until they saw they could make viable profit. One does not appropriate technology unless it is tied culturally. There's no cultural connection to a computer, turntables, or microphones. It's technology patented by one or many that are not cultures unto themselves. Me using a lamp isn't a culture. And those technologies evolved with help from cultures all over the world. Asians practically run the internet, engineering, and Space exploration and have contributed considerable knowledge surpassing their white peers in those endeavors. You have no clue what you're saying.
Dummy, you can't appropriate a dominant culture. You can only assimilate. A black woman wears a wig because of centuries and centuries of brainwashing that her distinct features are ugly, and that the only way she can get ahead is if she resembles closer to a black person. Same with the English language, dumbass. Quite insensitive to even liken that with appropriation when her ancestors were stripped of their native culture and language. Go read a book.
***** Well there are many reasons for a black woman to wear a weave. From the women, I know, the claim it helps hair grow/protects black hair. And given that black hair is not suited to European climate, I believe it. It's unfair for you to shame black women who wear wigs and weaves. No only are afros seen as unattractive but they are seen as unprofessional. And for women in the working world, appearance is so important.
***** I never said wearing weaves "all the time" was healthy. But occasional weave and wigs can be protective style. Do your research" www.curlynikki.com/2012/10/weave-as-protective-style-natural-hair.html And if Azealia wants to wear a weave. Respect it. Deal with it.
elm1230 I know where hiphop came from. My point is that it was started IN America which still makes it American culture. The content, the message, the influences of hiphop came from American History and American Experiences. If hiphop was created in ANY other country it would not be what it is today. When you got to a hiphop concert people of all races are there spending there money and reciting the songs. You are referring to hiphop as if it was a sub-culture but since its mainstream it is not. You act like hiphop is some weird trend that only young blacks and hispanics celebrate. Hiphop is bigger than country AND rock. When it transcends those genres it is no longer a black only art form.
I wish Azealia spoke like this more often. She's such an intelligent woman and she has such an important opinion and if people listened to her like this and listened to her music they'd release how amazing she is as an artist who recognises her position in the world and the power she has to affect things. IN SAYING THAT THOUGH I hate some of the things she says online, sending people tweets like "i hope your father molests you in your sleep". It really amazes me that she can be so poised here and be an offensive mess sometimes on twitter. I'm so torn.
***** The only people trying to separate people is white people. Her addressing it and hurting white feelings is not separation. Thats white people not wanting to talk about the truth, so they derail what she's talking about and say "SHES CRAZY, RACIST."
I think she has very valid points. I dont think she generally articulates them well, but when she calms down and just talks without the anger like here you can listen to what she's actually saying.
you are scared of the truth....how can she be racist by stating facts. She's racist because your uncomfortable hearing about race and the real robbers of the world...only whites, yes WHITES have the desire to erase entire civilizations and dominate....poverty, disease and war have only become global issues after mass imperialism...so she's not racist, she is honest. And what's "pretty sad" is the lack of thought you gave your comment. with love- Maleke (Yes, I kept my "slave" name!)
Maleke Glee In a white persons mind. The truth ANY truth which does not agree with their perspective of the world is bad. That is what you are witnessing here. White people love the lie.
***** it's racist because you hate them because they're white. Hating white people, and hating people that are dicks, are different. Not all white people are dicks to you, but you hate them all anyway, because they're white. If you hate them because of their race, that's racist. And if you hate them all, because of the actions of very few of them, that's bigotry too.
Why do so many black people act like they inherently get special rights to hip-hop just because they have similar skin tone to the people that started it?
Beautiful Unicorn THE BEASTIE BOYS AIN'T NO DAMN FOUNDERS OF HIP-HOP THEY WERE RICK RUBIN FRIENDS THEY WERE BUSING TABLES AT DANCETERIA DO UNDERSTAND THAT DO YOU NEED MORSE CODE A FLAG WAVED I KNOW SOME OF YOUR BRAIN IS CALCIFIED SO CAN'T USE YOUR IMAGINATION by George I think you got it

Beautiful Unicorn every DAMN thing I said made sense you just don't like what I said because it don't have nothing to do with you i don't think you can understand
I'm white and I just wanted to say that I am really impressed how she Talks about her view in These Things, without insulting or degrading any other People. I mean, I read the Book "Americanah" which is about black People in America, getting all this hate and Racism on a Daily Basis for no Reason. I think no white Person has a right to judge black People for their Skin Color, Music or behaviour unless they are Not in a conflict with a Person who is racist Torwards them for no damn Reason. No One should describe others as "animals" or as "uncivilized" because of their Color. There is no superior Race in this World. No race that dont dance Dirty, Steal, kill or whatever. Just stop with this bullshit and Start seeing People. I Promise your Life will be much better. Im Sorry if I had many grammer mistakes in here, I'm Not from America. I Hope this Comment dont offend anyone, if it did i guess someone wants a Fight. Have a Nice Day.
