Azerbaijan: Relative success for authoritarianism

Azerbaijan, the South Caucasus country once dominated by Russia is growing in strength. In the Azerbaijan-Armenia war for Nagorno-Karabakh it emerged victorious. Are Russia-Azerbaijan relations still more important than Turkey-Azerbaijan relations. Is oil and gas rich Azerbaijan now a major global player?
And why did Russia, Armenia's long-term ally fail to intervene in the Nagorno-Karabakh war? Are Russia's Turkey relations the explanation? Or is Russia so bogged down in the Ukraine war? The region of Azerbaijan once called the (unrecognised) Republic of Artsakh was regained, fulfilling Azerbaijan's decades-long post-Soviet mission. The Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) could not prevent Armenia's defeat.
Besides this, Azerbaijan has a Formula 1 Grand Prix, has hosted the Eurovision Song Contest and will host the COP-29 climate conference. How much is this a personal success for Azerbaijan's authoritarian leader Ilham Aliyev?

Dear Leader Ilham Aliyev has succeeded in using his country's massive per capita oil and gas wealth to make sure that his subjects are as poor as the resource-poor countries of Armenia and Georgia while guaranteeing them the additional benefit of the most repression in the region, including Iran. To call this a "relative success" is an understatement and insult for such a distinguished leader.

Thank you, the title and its narrative are absolutely ridiculous. Armenia has no Oil or Gas, is landlocked, has 2 closed borders since 30+ years, lost 2 military conflicts in the past 4 years and YET they somehow managed to exceed Azerbaijans GDP per capita and will keep to do so.
@user-xs8vr5yr4z

it is because unlike Armenia who received the Russian weapons for free, Azerbaijan has spent billions to buy weapons from Russia, Israel, Turkey etc. build its military from scratch, as well as give social benefits and build new houses for one million Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs from Armenia, whose homes were occupied by Armenia for 28 years. Their occupied lands were barbarically exploited and looted by Armenia for 28 years. Now Armenia helps Russia to bypass the sanctions. Armenia has no factories, no production, no its own export. Everybody knows that the only way Armenian GDP has grown since 2022, thanks to re-export of the sanctioned goods in/out from Russia.

Azerbaijan is a totally authoritarian regime led by the Aliyevs and the Pashayevs. There's no democracy, no press freedom, no human rights at all. Corruption and bribery are at unbelievable levels. The health and education systems in the country also are at its lowest. There is only one family who dictates everything in the country. As it is in many ex-Soviet countries, Azerbaijan is also led by ex-communists. In addition, there are lots of other bad things that I can write about the current regime, which make people suffer a lot. These are just nothing.

Democracy is not the "ideal for of government" that some seem to think. Democracies are only good when the people that make up that democracy are educated and responsible enough to choose wisely. I believe it was Winston Churchill that said something along the lines of "The best argument against democracy is to have a conversation with the common man for 5 minutes".

@@suleymantagiyev6175 To be honest I'm in a bit confused state at the moment. I can't remember exactly what I said but what I believe I meant to say is that democracy defined as the rule of the people is not necessarily always the best option. Singapore I believe is very advanced and well run (by Western standards/Western bias/ and from what I've seen) but as far as I know they are not a democracy. Agugusta the great Roman reformer and emperor who ruled in the aftermath of the assassination of Julius Ceasar was a dictator. There is also the fact that there are different types of democracies such as direct democracies (Switzerland) and parliamentary democracies. Anyway I'm enjoying this new having dialogue rather than throwing insults type of commenting that I have been seeing on social media recently.

Well done Azerbaijan. As a new republic Azerbaijan re borne with huge disadvantages: - One fifth of the country was occupied by Armenia, - Azerbaijany population was subjected to genocide by occupying Armenians. - 900k Azerbaijanies were driven out of their cities and villages in Karabakh and become internal refugees. - Russia as a major power in the region, helped the occupation and backed Armenians. As she has done for the last two centuries. Armenian lobbies in US and France were persuading their government to help the occuping Armenians. - Islamic Republic of Iran also backed Armenians and still doing so, as Iran is afraid of ethnic Azerbaijanis. Yet in spite of the huge challenges and difficulties Azerbaijan managed to get its territory back. Yes there is a authoritarian government in power, as the country has been in struggle since it’s existence, thank to bad neighbour. Azerbaijanis have done well considering the region and politics.

I would still prefer a dictatorship rather than a “corrupt” democracy. He saved his country’s territories and increased GDP per capital dramatically compared to its neighbors. It is a secular Transcaucasian country as well.

Video is very mixed and has no direction. Saying one thing, wrong translations . Lol. At the end of the day it is true Azerbaijan is a hugely authoritarian and repressive and as a result very poor. Russia did sell Armenia so now they want it or no Armenia will always try to break away from russia. Azerbaijan though will never be under russian control since it is already intermingled and tangled with 🦃. So this war in Karabax was huge loss for Russia as well. Rhey lost Caucasus probably forever.

War between Russia and west was originally scheduled to take place in Nogorno karabakh mountains. Where Russia's armour advantage would be neutralized. But Putin cleverly avoided that trap and answered in big flat Ukraine. After Ukraine war both Nikol and Aliyev will find out that finguring the Russian bear wasan't a smart idea afterall.

14:52 "Azerbaijan is trying to be useful country" Of course we try for it and it's quite normal. Today, Azerbaijan is surrounded by three hostile countries (Russia, Iran, Armenia). The only way to fight against such countries is not the army, but at the same time it is necessary to increase the popularity of the country. Therefore, it is important to hold international events in the country as much as possible. However, it is a fact that the presence of our oil has many positive effects and consequences. But, I must say that the reason why Armenia is in such a situation today is not only because we are strong, but also because of their western-oriented policy. It is very natural that Russia could not remain silent on the policy against it of the nation and country that it used as its henchman to keep the Caucasus under its control for nearly 200 years. Note: I completely agree with you that there is a lot of corruption and no democracy in the country.🫠
