@@ey7290 It's a god damned design not a part. But sure, there may be one original part left in 2040 i.e. an aluminum panel somewhere. The B-52 is a proven technology. However, it is the optimized service and management of maintenance depot organization that is really to be commended. They probably had to fight management to deliver this level of quality. BTW: The thrust improvement of each of the jet turbines retro-fitted probably amounts to 30%-50%.

I used to be a crew chief on a KC-135 Refueler and periodically I rode with the plane. Laying down in the back next to the "Bommer" (boom operator) I could watch the B-52 being refueled. On the ground the B-52 looks ungainly, but in the air it looked like an Albatross, absolutely gorgeous. What many do not know is that the wing tips have over an 11 foot flexibility, such that they would have to jack up the wing tip while on the ground just to remove some inspection stress panels. Those panels had to fit even when the wings were in the UP position during flight.
@rtlamb
@rtlamb 4 года назад
Watch the wings on takeoff roll. They start out drooping, then all of a sudden they catch lift and will bend dramatically upward at the wingtips. If the plane is fully loaded with weapons the tail will catch lift first, then the nose will lift off. These were not fully loaded. After years in a B-52G squadron, I still love to watch these giants take to the air!

Started loading bombs on them with my MJ1 bomb loader in 1967. By the time I got out I estimate I had loaded at least 50,000 bombs on B52's both in Guam and then mostly Thailand. I will never tire of listening them take off. Twice while I was in, they had a campaign of every bomber in the air for a massive mission. They typically carried 108 500 pound bombs per plane. 54,000lb bomb load. That was a site to see and a ton of work to load every aircraft on station. 90 planes if memory serves me right.

David the taxpayers got their money’s worth by them not having to pay for the development and build of new bombers. The cost of maintaining the B52s, may be high, but those costs are minuscule compared to the price of developing a new aircraft that would still need fuelling and maintaining.

I remember my first time seeing the B52 in Mar 1971. It was on a ADC base transitioning to SAC. My job was to refuel & defuel. I remember the first take off I witnessed wondering If there was enough run way. When the aircraft has a full load of fuel (312K lbs) and possibly 70K lbs. of weapons, the wings stay planted on the wheels and are the last thing to leave the ground. When they return from their mission I remember walking under those same wheels.

A B-52 makes me think of one thing: The Day After. In Milton Keynes, England the US jets used to fly over my house and school several times per day during the early 80s. Mostly F-111 and A-10. It made me feel less safe, because we knew the US bases were prime targets for Soviet nukes. When the film The Day After was shown we were discussing the blast radius of nukes and whether Stantonbury Campus school could withstand the shock waves. That film really scared us and had everybody talking, although I did not realize how much the film had scared us until many years later. We should have been playing football etc, instead of discussing death at 13 years old. We moved to NZ in 1985. It felt so much safer, because there were none of those bases as NZ had just banned US warships etc. I am still amazed by the B-52s though. There is a certain awe in seeing something that can destroy several cities in a single mission.

@annferguson3113
@annferguson3113 4 года назад
@Aquila Rossa Unfortunately this young generation didn’t see that movie but another one call, The Day After Tomorrow not The Day After. I was old enough to see this scary movie on could then and still could happen. My dad was in the Air Force at the time so we were a dead on target no matter where my dad was stationed. At the time of that movie was shown, we had just moved to Edwards AFB in CA a year before. It was then that my family and including my dad, heard for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd sonic booms that followed the fright of our impending doom from a nuclear blast and took a long time while to get use to that sound and the vibrations that came behind it, we knew we were going to die. But I was puzzled because the air sirens didn’t go off telling my dad to find his way to his emergency duty station. Edwards AFB was and to my knowledge is still a test base for air planes and even the space shuttle!!! It landed in Edwards for a long time until the team there though it was safe enough to land in Florida. That’s was why for a long time the shuttle rode piggy back on a 747 jet to Florida. But the new shuttle landed in Florida in Oct’19...Who knew???s

There must be a strong cross-wind coming from the left. All of the B-52's right-wing wheels are on the ground while the left-wing wheels are up a few feet before take-off. Is this a wind issue or a fuel distribution issue? Then after they break ground, the weight switched to the left-wing where the left-wing wheel is on the ground while the right-wing wheel is off the runway. It seems to me the pilots were putting in left aileron during the run and as they picked up speed they made a proper cross-wind take off.
