Jimi showed respect to those he learned from Buddy, BB and even Mike Bloomfield. He never tried to show them up like he did others (Clapton). Although he didn't mean any disrespect he just wanted to show them how good he was. They knew.

My Father met Jimi at Madison Square Garden in 1969. The entire encounter probably lasted 15 seconds. He shook my Dad’s hand and my Dad said he was very humble, had huge long thin fingers, smiled at my Dad and less than a year later he was gone. RIP Jimi.

It's nice to see Buddy looking so good and in good shape. I remember seeing him out on Yonge St. in Toronto back in the 70s. He used to come to Toronto quite often and I saw him and Junior Wells at the Brunswick House back then. He was a very cool dude and, at the time probably in the top two or three electric players in the world. The man has a PhD. in the blues.
@BitterBosh
@BitterBosh 10 лет назад
He played near my town a few years back, & I was blown away. First off, his band was incredible by themselves, & he walked out & all around in the crowd, even up to the top of the bleacher seats I was sitting in, all the while playing brilliantly. Never seen anything like that live. I respect & appreciate the Hell out of blues music, but I don't listen often to it, but Buddy's blues are an exception, he's one of a relative few that can truly make his guitar sing or cry like it's a living, breathing organism. Again, I was mesmerized watching & listening to him play.

Jimi was a phenomenal guitarist by any standards in the Cosmos.It was hard to believe he was playing the same instrument as other guitarists - it sounded so very different. The first time I saw him, like BB, was as Little Richard's guitarist. As I recall he just sat on his amp and strummed along in a fairly pedestrian manner... he looked very unassuming - almost embarrassed to be there. But Buddy really opened my eyes to what blues guitar was capable of - no wonder Beck calls him God!

Buddy and B.B. are men that have pioneered a genre that is just as familiar sounding, as it is riveting. These are the true kings of the blues and I can only imagine Jimi's adoration when he met them. B.B met him at a time where Jimi was so shy and quiet. "He didn't drink or smoke then." People always thought of Hendrix as this wild man but that was him performing. Not long prior to Buddy meeting him, he had been the back up band member who didn't even have the courage to sing. Thank God for Chas Chandler taking him to England and promoting him. If not for him, Jimi wouldn't have even gotten big in the states.

I always tell this story about Buddy Guy. I was bar hopping Rush street in Chicago. If you've ever been there, you know what i'm talking about. I ended up in this little club, at the bar, next to this black guy. I commented how he looked like Buddy Guy, and he smiled and said "Yeah, I get that alot" I said "well, anyone who looks like him I will buy a drink" And I did. We talked, and five minutes later, he got up from his break, went back up on stage and finished his set. It WAS Buddy! lol

I met Jimi on March 15th, 1968. (yes, "The Ides of March!!!) I was barley legal...just turned 18. We continued our friendship beyond that night. I was hanging with him when he did that HUGE memorial jam for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. at The Generation Club in Greenwich Village, NYC. He told me about Buddy at that time, but I'm sure if he had met him yet...only that if I wanted to get into the blues (and I did) that Buddy Guy was someone I should listen to....

Wow to share the same air with a legend like that is something but to be friends with one is a whole other thing. Do you have any other stories that you remember from those days?

Guy and B.B. are two of my favorites. I like listening to them talk, too. They always seem like good men. You can't always say that about musicians.

So cool that they're getting all this stuff on tape before they're gone. Nothing like a couple of greats reminiscing about the old days.

B.B. said Jimi didn't change strings to left-handed ? That's a common myth. Jimi DID change the strings over to left-handed ! Look closely at pictures and the low E is at top... just like right-handed players. Also I go to the EMP a lot in seattle and his Woodstock guitar is there (and others) and all are strung for left-handers.

just saw this clip and wondered the same thing. I've corrected many people who say Hendrix played a right handed guitar without changing the strings around. Every video I've seen debunks that, I wonder why BB said that?

Dunno... even in old pics of Jimi with "...the Flames" (?)... if you look closely you can see low E at top.

Because he could play both ways. It didn't matter if the guitar was configured for right handed or left handed people. Just goes to show how good he was.

buddinmaplestory buddinmaplestory - I did some googling and found some posts to back up what you're saying. I am pasting here: James Marshall Hendrix was naturally left-handed but his father, Al, initially tried to force the young James to play right-handed. Al Hendrix reportedly believed playing left-handed was a sign of the devil. Why so? It has its roots in language. “Sinister”, in ancient Latin, means “left” and also “unlucky” - in modern times someone “sinister” is un-trusted or even evil. These linguistic oddities persist. “Right” means “correct” in English, obviously. In French, “gauche” means both “left” and “awkward.” So, even in language, left-handers get a bum deal. Jimi Hendrix tended to write right-handed - there are photos of Jimi signing autographs and writing lyrics right-handed. And Jimi did learn to play guitar right-handed, as demanded by his father Al. Jimi modified his first (right-handed) guitars for his natural leftism - restringing and changing the nut. But when Al was around, he felt he had to play a right-handed guitar simply flipped over (treble E at the top). So Jimi taught himself to be “both-handed.” Free’s Paul Kossoff, when he was a young guitar salesman in London, once recalled Jimi circa 1967 trying a guitar in the shop where Koss worked, and simply flipping it over so the treble E was closest to his face. And Hendrix still played brilliantly. Maybe all this explains why Jimi could play just about anything on the guitar?

Dennis Parrish Gary Moore was left-handed, but learned to play right-handed, and continued to play right-handed all the way through his life. Some say that was part of the reason he had so much control and strength in his fretwork, and why his pick hand position always seemed a bit odd, compared to what we normally see.

Just priceless the gr8ts talking about the greatest so glad to have grown up in the sixties and in motown and lived his music just magical. Was around guitars who thought they could copy his style that was the challenge in those days they would play Hendrix, Dennis Coffey, and the Motown gr8t musicians The Funk Bros. Those were gr8t times I thought it would b like that always n forever WOW what a surprise.

john pshitek He could do it all man lol once he got big and could afford stuff he always played regularly stringed but I read this biography on him where people are quoted saying that he could play a guitar left handed or right handed and just flip a guitar over with upside down strings and play it just as good.

Travis Gooden Yes indeed !!, Jimi knew the Guitar inside-out, there are many people who have witnessed Jimi play upside-down, right handed & every other way, He was ambidextrous like many Genius' are, Peace.
