The mountain (Currahee) was made famous internationally by Steven Spielberg's TV series of Band of Brothers. The mountain was featured during the training of the American Paratroopers at Camp Toccoa, Georgia where they ran up and down Currahee. The name of the mountain became the motto for these paratroopers including the famous quote: "3 Miles up, 3 Miles down".

@@omegacon4 "Plot Armor" is a concept in fiction when a character who remains important to the upcoming plot of the story can't be allowed to die, thus they are able to improbably escape from a lethal situation. What happened in this clip is a simple continuity error that the filmmakers assumed nobody would notice because of the pacing. They figured it was more important to show the character difference between Sobel and Winters than it was to show him cleaning up the mess hall, or waste time with a scene showing everybody in the company waiting for the support staff to catch up for PT.

@@mikepastor.k6233 The previous scene has Sobel mention that this was a special meal, since he had just made Captain and Winters had just made Lieutenant, so I'm assuming spaghetti wasn't "normal" for them. @@RobertMc0811 It's a good sign that they were toughening up. A lot of forces, especially the more elite forces such as Spec Ops, actually do similar to what Sobel just did: Make them eat a good hearty meal, than off you go for a run. If you ate too quickly, you were going to vomit all that food back up. It's essential to know how to eat properly, with haste, but without causing yourself to throw up everywhere. You never know when your next meal might be in the field of battle, so eat heartily when you can, but not to the point where you'd be a hinderance. The true reason Sobel did this was because of his rising antipathy toward Winters. Sobel at this point was sensing that Winters was a better officer than him, and a better leader. Sobel was dismayed when Colonel Sink promoted Winters, and he worried that the men of Easy were forming more respect for Winters than for himself. By putting Winters in charge of mess hall for two weeks and telling him to serve spaghetti, all the while planning to call a surprise Curahee run after the men gorged, Sobel was hoping the men would assume it was Winters' decision to serve spaghetti, and therefore blame him for the ordeal. Note the long, smug look Sobel gives Winters as the men are leaving the mess hall. Winters, of course, once again proved himself the better leader by dressing to run Curahee too, alongside the men. Sobel didn't expect that, which is why he double-taked when he saw Winters running.

I realised what he did actually saved their lives because an enemy does not care if you are eating, sleeping or having a good time, they will attack and if you do not know how to quickly react, then you dead. This is not "war theory" but what has actually happened. nodinitiative I did not know the man personally but if the way in which he was portrayed was accurate, then I would say he acted in spite. The character in the series spoke of making Easy company the best in the Army, but his actions said otherwise. The men did learn to support each other and expect surprises, but it wasn't from a good teacher. Just adaptation. I don't think he cared for the men. Maybe it was the power that comes with rank. I hope I'm wrong, but it is a possibility.

999cheeseballs Other units also had different "teachers" and adaptations. But his style of teaching molded these men into the best fighting unit in the US military. Kinda reminded me of another trainer, he was not quite kind towards new recruits but after they finished their training duration and those that made it through, loved him like a father and him like his own children. In peace time, a drill sgt. or a captain could afford to be nice to his unit. But when you are preparing your unit against one of the best military in the World (Germany), you drill your unit into a crack unit.

Drill sergeant and instructors job is all an act. They act hard and harsh on the recruits to prepare them for war, drill them to learn and adapt, to be strong regardless of situation. They're being dicks, but that's to force the recruits to harden up, punishment over petty things force them to always expect the worst and enjoy the little good things. When every single recruits that made it through graduate, then they can be nice toward them, the greatest gift a fresh graduate can have is to be told that he made the instructor proud.

He was a wretched officer; tactically incompetent and a danger to his men in a combat situation. He was a hard ass to cover his own deficiencies. He should have been a supply officer. His “talents” would have been more useful to the war effort in that arena. Oh and Easy Co. did well because of Winters. Winters was a natural leader. Schwimmer’s Character was portrayed superbly though.

All the 101st did well in Europe, not just Easy Company. Sobel led one company only. Sobel is getting a lot more credit here than he deserves, if his character in the series is accurate. The motivation of the men as well as the leadership of Winters counts heavily on their performance in Europe. Winters appears to have been an outstanding battlefield tactician as well as superb leader. A unit could not ask for more.

This was mentioned from Stephen Ambrose book ⬇️ At the end of the second week, Tipper went on, “We were told, ‘Relax. No runs today.’ We were taken to the mess hall for a tremendous meal of spaghetti at lunchtime. When we came out of the mess hall, a whistle blew, and we were told, ‘The orders are changed. We run.’ We went to the top of Currahee and back with a couple of ambulances following, and men vomiting spaghetti everywhere along the way. Those who dropped out and accepted the medics’ invitation to ride back in the ambulances found themselves shipped out that same day.” The men were told that Currahee was an Indian word that meant “We stand alone,” which was the way these paratroopers expected to fight. It became the battle cry of the 506th. The officers and men ran up and down Currahee three or four times a week. They got so they could do the six-plus-mile round trip in fifty minutes. In addition, they went through a grueling obstacle course daily, and did pushups and pull-ups, deep-knee bends and other calisthenics. When the men were not exercising, they were learning the basics of soldiering. They began with close order drill, then started making night marches with full field equipment. The first night march was eleven miles; on each march that followed a mile or two was added on. These marches were made without a break, without a cigarette, without water. “We were miserable, exhausted, and thought that if we did not get a drink of water we were certain to collapse,” Pvt. Burton “Pat” Christenson recalled. At the end of a march Sobel would check each man’s canteen to see that it was still full.

I own the book and have watched the series (and also served in the 101st), and will say this; Sobel was a self serving, textbook narcissist that only had HIS best interests at heart. He was not “training” those men per se, but rather using them as targets for his own shortcomings and insecurities. Did he build unit cohesion and make them tough enough to endure what laid ahead? Yes, but that wasn’t his goal. He was one of those clueless fucksicles that wanted medals and glory even at the cost of his men’s lives. Case(s) in point; when he told LT Winters to “find” (make up) “infractions” on 6 men just to cancel their passes, and in this scene where I can guarantee you didn’t make him liked in the least by the Mess Sergeant and staff by leaving all those dishes and food on the tables for them to pick up and clean off. Furthermore, planning out that particular meal and run along with him ordering men to NOT help a struggling and possibly injured man when he went down on a run. He was all about his individual self and not about everyone becoming a team, even though they did. People get his intentions and his results confused and I say this because I served under a couple of “Sobels”. One was my Platoon SGT in the 101st who had 22 years in (and was only an E-7) but had NEVER been deployed. He had spent ALL of his time in hospitals and TMC’s and called in some favors to get assigned to an Infantry battalion so it would look good on his resume when he retired. There were only 4 of us in his platoon with combat patches including me, and all of us except for one were E-4’s. The one NCO, who is still one of my brothers and best friends, earned a Bronze Star in the Gulf. The PSG looked at all of us with patches with a combination of envy and pure contempt, especially when one of us corrected him when he started giving one of his speeches about how things were going to be in theater when we got deployed and went down range. The STUPID shit he said and pulled would’ve gotten half or more of us killed in actual combat, and did on several occasions during training. He had the same mentality as Sobel and would do other stupid shit to us like making us stay until 2100 (9 PM) at the battalion aid station to inventory our med chests, or more often than not, just sitting there with our collective thumb up our ass. My personal “favorite”, was him making us show up at 0330 or 0400 an hour before PT/accountability formation for his own formation. Again, we stood around for an hour while everybody else was still in their bunks. 🙄😡 He finally got his ass chewed, and rightfully so by our SGM who just happened to be in the AO checking on the CQ’s and staff duty, and saw us all in the BAS (battalion aid station) sitting around and still in BDU’s doing nothing. The SGM came in, asked WTF was going on, and after we told him (our Prick E-7 had stepped out for a few) HE releases us and gave us the following day off. He jumped in his shit again when he tried to give me and a couple of other Medics BS Article 15’s for being “out of ranks” in one of his early morning formations. All 3 of us were squad/section leaders and had enough of his control freak, narcissistic, and idiotic bullshit. We only heard about the ass chewings he got, but were told that they were epic! 🤣🤣 Sorry for writing a novel here, but this clip along with several comments I read struck a chord with me obviously lol!

That is exactly what I had always thought. EZ Company became the best in spite of Sobel's intentions. Another example I can think of, was when he changed the orders to Winters regarding latrine duty, knowing full well that the message wouldn't reach him in time. He then offers Winters a choice. Loss of weekend pass or Court Martial. That in no way is a logical progression of punishment. Essentially he wanted to assert his power for looks. And the boss move by Winters to take the court martial was brilliant. Because he knew no Court would take that case seriously and it would come back on Sobel.

After they found out how Sobel fared after the war and realizing that he had always been a troubled individual, they decided to see the training through the rose colored glasses of hindsight and paint a kinder picture. The Fallschirmjägers, also known as the 1st Parachute Division, or 1. Fallschirm-Jäger-Division, they were an elite division within the Luftwaffe. They were even better trained than U.S. paratroopers and did some extremely impressive feats, only being pushed back in the face of superior allied numbers and equipment, or destroyed because of Hitler's delusional ineptitute leading to them being assigned truly impossible tasks. Saying that E-company was good due to Sobel's training would just just like saying that the Fallschirmjägers were good because of Hitler's leadership.

To which I begin to educate those dumbasses who is responsible for getting them to June 6th. Marines pioneered amphibious warfare and technology, we advised them the best way to attack Normandy. And those rock-eaters still fucked it up. Because of longstanding rivalries and pride on behalf of the US Army.

The soldiers thought they were on a break, Sobel corrected them.

Sobel was a great company trainer, but a terrible fieldofficer. This scene was so good... and now i'm actually craving spaghetti.

I like how when they started chanting and airborne infantry taps, it basically came off as a "fuck you" to Sobel. Only a complete a-hole of a regiment leader would run his soldiers after having them eating a pasta dish knowing full well what something like that can do to a person's digestive system.

@@Batou3 rice burns through the system like fuel, that's why it's popular in Asian countries, but chili? I hope the were doing their PT out at sea so they could hose off the deck because that had to stink, woof.
