the blast radius is smaller than the altitude of the plane it was dropped from. you're not imagining planes at the correct height.

Reread the caption above. The F-35 released the bomb above Mach 1. This was a successful loft bombing test. Loft bombing (toss bombing) was practiced by the USAF in the late 50s and 1960s so fightercraft could drop medium yield nuclear bombs on Soviet armor

It's a nuclear capable bunker buster. The most powerful warhead it can carry is the Mod 7 version (warheads and bombs share a name), with a maximum yield of 340 KTon. This is more than enough to destroy about any underground facility, so long the warhead reaches the installation. It's also capable of completely destroying all but the largest cities, but that's not what they are (hipotetically) used for.

BTW, it's not a missile, it's a freefall bomb stabilized by spinning motion initiated by rocket engines.

The Tsar Bomba was purely a show of force and its colossal blast radius serves no strategic purpose. That's why nukes are becoming smaller and more accurate instead.

@@jhk8396 Exactly. Volume increases by the cube, while area increases by the square. Since Energy disperses in a volume, the area isn't increased on a 1:1 proportion to the blast yield increase. Superficial area is the most important as it is where most of the enemy resources are. Now, maximum nuclear weapon efficiency (yield / weight) increases dramatically with the size (and weight) of the package, but that brings other problems, like compatible delivery systems; Large suborbital delivery systems, for example, are hard to maintain and not very practical to be used with decoys, as huge as they are). The Tsar Bomb was not only mostly propaganda (as you said), but turned so huge that only - already obsolete - aircraft delivery was viable for it. Finally, there is no point increasing the destructive power beyond total havoc of the target. For most targets, 100 KTon - 1MTon is enough.

Because that's a bunker busting nuclear munition and nuclear tests are, sadly, forbidden by the major powers.

@@fortheemperor4454 I believe they use a more accurate mass simulant for high end munitions like this, where the balance and the mass distribution has to perfectly match the actual weapon -- I think. Usually, though, you're correct, they just fill it with something cheap and easy to measure.
