"Baba Yetu"
Composed by Christopher Tin
Recorded live at the Navy Band's Concerts on the Avenue series at the United States Navy Memorial in 2015.
Featuring Musician 1st Class Bill Edwards.
"Baba Yetu" was composed in 2005 by Chinese American composer Christopher Tin for the video game "Civilization IV." In 2010, the piece was nominated for a Grammy award in the "Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)" category. It went on to be named the winner of that category in Feb. 2011, making it the first piece of music composed for a video game to be nominated and win a Grammy award.
The lyrics are a Swahili translation of "Lord's Prayer."

Man! I just felt the presence of God in my bedroom as I played this prayer. I wish all of them believe in the power of God and His Son Jesus Christ who taught this prayer to his disciple. And Swahili is a sister language in my country of origin! Amazing how they mastered!

This song is sung perfectly, this lead voice is on point. Now another take on this performance. In this time of death, pandemic, quarantine and fear I find this song to be uplifting and a source of joy. I start my day off with this performance and if I have a bad day listen to it again and again. This song was originally created for a video game as I understand it. I just love it for its ability to make me feel good.

Yep. It was written by Christopher Tin, for Civilization IV. It won a Grammy, the first video game song to do so. Everything about the piece is amazing, and in particular this cover... A Chinese American writes an Africanized version of the Lord's Prayer, sung in Swahili, and here performed beautifully by the US military. Can you say "hope for the world"? 😉

My Uncle has been dead for many years now past away in 2001 at the age of 60 during his Navy career he served part of his time on a hospital ship before he retired. Which also includes bring home the bodies of our dead troops and returning them to their families. I miss him and because of my younger brother who has autism, he was only one of a few people who get him to open up and talk and who understood my brother. In fact, my uncle was good with a lot of disabled individuals both adults and children.

My high school choir sang this song, and it was the most magical of every piece we did. Our choir didn’t always get along or listen to our director very well, but when we pulled out this piece, everyone took it seriously. When we sang it, we sounded better than we did on any other song and everyone noticed. We loved it so much, we sang it again two years later as well. 8 years later, and I still love it. Great job Navy, you did an awesome job vocally and instrumentally.
