We have something similar here in the States. Sometimes a troop will descent on a luxury handbag or sneaker store and leave devastation behind. Usually, though, it's a convenience store and they do, very occasionally, get culled.

Why would they respect you? You run in fear, that is not a respectable reaction to them.

I live on a farm outside George. For 40 years our local troop of baboons caused minimal damage to our garden. Then a troop of vandals displaced from the town, where they feasted on rubbish bins, invaded and displaced our troop. We discouraged the newcomers with bomb crackers, but they quickly learned to disregard these. Soon they began to raid several times a week. If windows were left slightly open they would simply rip open the window frame which would then need to be replaced. They did tremendous damage inside the houses. Dogs were severely mauled and one dog was killed. After a while they would watch and if we were in the garden on the other side of the house they would enter. i would walk into the house and find baboons inside Our position was untenable. I asked several farmers with orchards in remote mountains how they solved the problem, The reply was invariably "we shoot 1 or 2, whereafter they leave us alone for many months, then they return and we repeat the process." Obtaining a permit from Cape Nature, I reluctantly trapped and shot one. They left us alone for a year. Then I found 2 in the house and shot one. They have now left us alone for another year, except for raiding some fruit trees some distance from the house. However they still raid others in the neighbourhood. This troop has grown so large as a result of scavanging that I think they may need to be culled eventually.

Many years ago I was able to hang out with a troop of baboons in this area in the presence of a human guide. He was accepted by the troop and was considered by them as the alpha male. They didn’t bother us and I felt quite safe.
