I love watching people freak out when they hit the end of the episode cliffhanger--now they understand the anguish when Matt says "...and that's where we'll leave it for this week" in the current campaign. 😆 Loving your reaction videos!
Delilah and Scanlan used the spell Silence. A lot of spells in D&D require you to say words out loud in order for them to work, so if you can't speak, you cant cast the spells.
Minor quibble I have on the show is that I wish they showed more use of verbal components to spell casting. Give the spells more of a "they're doing a mechanic" than "it's a super-hero power" vibe. But I suspect that creates complexities that might be more trouble than its worth. Having said that - Scanlan's use of instruments and voice when casting throughout the show, then having that muffled sound effect... wonderfully done.
Vex doesn't hate Keyleth. It's just always been Vex and Vax. Everyone else has either abandoned them or died so she's worried about Vax actually falling for someone. She doesn't want him hurt but she also is terrified to lose him.
When you said that you only had time to watch the one at the begining I laughed because that cliffhanger. They did so well at building the emotions over these six hours, and its so satisfying to see new viewers react to it as strongly as the rest of us old timers. Thank you for sharing, and I can't wait to see you react to the final episode!!!
Haha yeah I thought I might hate myself for that, and I sure did 😭. I can’t wait to watch the last one! But I guess you could say I’m savoring them by breaking them up like this haha, even if it’s painful!
5:30 In the actual game this happened: Travis/Grog rolled like an 8 or something. So Matt(the DM) took control of his character, for a few rounds as I recall. Then Travis all of sudden asks: "Wait!! I am a barbarian in relentless rage. Can I even be charmed??" Matt checking the rules..."No you cannot" Then Grog was right back fighting the Brierwoods. It is cool that they kept that RLS in there
Some spells require concentration. You usually can only concentrate on one spell at a time. (There are artifacts, and caster types that can concentrate on multiple spells, but those are special circumstances.) When Delilah tried to cast a spell to help protect Sylas, she lost concentration on Silence, and that enabled Scanlon to cast silence on her.
Haha I got Yoda lightsaber fight vibes from Pike as well. Before Sylas punched her across the room I got avatar vibes from Keyleth when she was defending with the different elements. Great reaction as usual. Looking forward to your finale video!
If you want a repeat of the chills from Keyleth's Sunbeam O' Doom, the track is called 'Blinded by the Light', and I think it's one of the most incredible pieces of music Neal Acree, the composer, has ever done. I can't wait to see your reaction to the final episode!
Ah, the reason critters are always asking, "Is it Thursday yet!" hehe Oh and through the animation, it looked like it coulda been a "counterspell" Sam cast. I don't remember exactly, but around this time in the stream is when Sam/Scanlan got to the level and learned how useful counterspell could really be. Also, there is the "Silence" spell, it coulda been that too. But either way, i love the way the animated it into the combat! The shush motion, lol.
They do cliffhangers so well 😅 I feel your pain. Keyleth and Pike were just awesome with their radiant damage dealing spells throughout this fight in game. The way they animated Silence to screw around with spellcasting here is stellar. And the added flavor that it's used against a bard, visually it becomes a notable disadvantage since bardic magic is dependent on their art/performance (Scanlan's music in this case). I'm just guessing they are reserving the use of Counterspell for later seasons at it is a higher level spell and much more important for later uses plotwise.
That wouldn't make sense, since Scanlan did use Counterspell in the fight against the Briarwoods, and Silence is an actual spell. I believe he had it prepared in the actual fight at the Zigguraut, because it was used against the party at Sovereign Uriel's castle in Emon.
The subtitles have been saying Orthax for a long time at this point, you just didn't notice it. And well, it kinda gives something away, in that the voice in Percy's head is given a name. But you had to have noticed before that there's somebody else there, right?
1 episode.... Oooh, boy. I'll try to hold my tongue then. The Whispered one is the non copyright for D&D Vecna. Do what you wish with that tidbit. Oh, yeah.. Pike is amazing.. But that's war clerics for you. D&d spells have somatic, material & verbal parts, as hou know. Silence just messes up with any magic user, though this scene has a loosey-goosey use since Pike was so near Scanlan. Orthax. Figured that would be a mini spoiler in the subs, but saying anything would have been a spoiler on itself. And that's sunbeam for you when you let druids be. Keyleth is good in close combat when she changes to her sabertooth form. Divine magic... Gotta love it. Specially against undeads, vampires, and some dark attacks. Seduction... The ultimate saving roll trolling. 😏 Also, eyes closed.. Disadvantage.. Imagine those dice to hit! Not counterspelled. Same spell for her. Scanlan is both a bit "petty" and vindictive in that way. But yeah... Bards and counterspell. Kiki down.. And only 1 episode. 😏 Told you.. Full pitcher & see it all at once. 😋 BTS: There was more Percy shooting in the campaign. He shot Sylas , only for him to go mist form. Keyleth's sunbeam did end him, though.
Delilah used the Silence spell on Scanlon, making it so he couldn't cast spells with a verbal component (speaking spells), so when he was able to cast again, he stopped her from casting spells by using the same Silence spell against her, it was such a good justice moment!
Saying Pike is kind of obvious in that she is glowing is very on point. In the game Pike would often fail her stealth checks due to her wearing plate armor. ( In D&D Plate armor gives a negative bonus to stealth checks )
Actually, in D&D 5E, it's not a negative in the sense of a negative number, like it was in D&D 3.0/3.5. In 5E, plate armor is given Disadvantage, which means you roll 2d20, and take the lesser of the two rolls. In Pike's case, Strength is more important than Dexterity for wearing her armor -- which is why her Dexterity modifier, used for Stealth checks, is so low. Ashley Johnson also is famous for rolling really badly on Stealth checks as well, usually at 5 or lower for a total. The CR cast actually joked about this all the way through Campaign 1, as they thought it weird if Ashley didn't roll low.
I read that as a counterspell rather than silence, but I'm not sure it exactly matches the live play. But he did counterspell in the actual game, and counterspell rather than silence matches doing it as a reaction.
Hey Kritter XD! To explain a couple of things: 1) Scanlan got Silenced, not Counterspelled. He, however, did Counterspell Delilah. 2) Cassandra and Vax were not glamered, per se -- Sylas, as a Vampire, has a racial feature as Undead that allows him to cast Dominate Person as a Charm. Grog, because he was raging, is immune to being Charmed. 3) When Sylas Briarwood was destroyed by Keyleth casting Sunbeam, his Dominate Person Charms wore off -- which is why Vax and Cassandra regain control. Lastly, I'll explain Keyleth. Spoiler Warning -- Campaign 1 4) Keyleth got hit by Delilah casting Finger of Death. In D&D, if a Finger of Death deals you enough Necrotic damage to meet or exceed your current HP, you die outright. No death saving throws, no nothing. Your character is perma-dead. In the campaign, there are a couple of differences: First, Vex never takes a Fly potion before this fight, as she did in the campaign. She had taken some damage from a spell that Delilah had hit her with, so she drank a Potion of Greater Healing. Right after this, she got hit with the Finger of Death, not Keyleth. She escaped death at only 1 HP. Literally, Vex's HP when she got hit by the Finger of Death was at 76 HP -- and the Finger of Death dealt her 75 Necrotic damage. When her Fly potion wore off, she took another 4 Bludgeoning damage from falling to the ground, getting knocked unconcious. It was at this point that healing potions, nor healing spells, were ineffective because of the Spinning Orb of Death, which negated all magic in the chamber, as the episode shows. It was also the first time that the party realized that what they were doing had _real consequences._
Just a minor point: Scanlan didn't counter or reverse Delilah's spell - He just cast the same spell on her that she had earlier cast on him, because turnabout is fair play. 😁
It's always been naming him...its been like the from the beginning. So not "out of the blue". But they never say his name in dialogue on the show ... but it has ALWAYS been in the subtitles.
Omggg thank you so much! I want to do a reaction to that stuff after the last episode. I’m going to be so desperate for more Vox Machina stuff once it’s over 😭. I even bought Kith and Kin to read and review haha
@@KritterXD More Vox Machina? May I suggest Dark Horse Comics "Vox Machina Origins?" and of course campaign 1 (Headphones Not Recommended - audio quality issues) in early sessions
Yeah, we all get invested in these characters. The spell was silence, which can really mess up your spell casters if they have any verbal aspects of their spells. I just had my Druid be on an 8 hour mute curse. And she was the primary healer. I say "was" because she died an hour out of the mute curse. 😑😂
@@KritterXD It is Tomb of Aniliation where there's a "death curse" meaning once you're dead? You're dead until the end of the campaign if you're lucky. It's a LOT of fun also VERY brutal. Not everyone's cup of tea.
Orthax’s name is only revealed via subtitles and never explicitly stated via dialogue. Also i see you bought kith & kin via the comments. Tidbit to know it follows the twins before they meet the rest of the party (so therefore its pre-comics as well) so they are significantly less powerful then how they are at the end of this season, they are around level 1-2 so no cool party tricks otherwise. Also its best read with the audio book and liam (vax) and laura (vex) reprise their roles to voice their dialogue. And robbie daymond (another prolific voice actor and dear friend to the cast of critical role) reads all the other parts of the book.
