BABY DUCKS rescued from a garage! But something goes WRONG...

Rescuing a mother duck and her ducklings from an unusual place is quite a common call out at this time of year, but the most recent rescue took a turn we were not expecting...
Simon and Alannah, one of our volunteers, were called out to rescue a family of mallards that had wandered into a local car garage. Whilst, luckily, the group was easy to contain, releasing them back to safety turned out to be a little trickier...

I found an abandoned duckling once, or I should say duck found me. I tried to find his mama & family, to no avail, tried to find a rehabber or someone to help, to no avail. Except one person that claimed to be a 'rehabber' that just wanted to put him down. Next month will be sixteen years, I still have that 'duckling' and he is the love of my life!! Turns out that he is handicapped (bad wing) so he never would have survived under normal circumstances. I DO NOT condone removing animals from their natural life and habitat but it was meant to be. That duck lives the best life he ever could have.

Watching Simon splash his way across the stream reminded me of the freedom with which eperienced canyon hikers don't hesitate to enter pools of water where the canyon walls are very close together. Sometimes the water is more than waist deep, but so far no one has gone in over their head. Examples can be found among the many RU-vid videos of "Jamal Green" hiking in the canyons of south eastern Utah. No ducks that to my recollection, but some other interesting fauna, notably the pigmy rattle snakes that live in the Paria River canyon. I could snark about Simon and venomous snakes, but I've seen WA rescue a viper, which is venomous.

Ah yes, the "unlucky" ones gets to be taken back, to a nice warm room, with a steady supply of food and water within webbed-foots reach and no dangers of predators and harsh weather conditions, while also getting to meet and bond with new, interesting friends. 😉 Still! Very nice catch and rescue! The mother duck didn't seem too sure of her unfamiliar surroundings, when it came to taking cover with her babies, while flight was also out of the question.

Through an odd set of coincidences I found a mother Canada goose and 4-5 goslings cornered in an empty loading dock of a large defunct retail store. I was able to rescue the goslings but the mum got away. Putting my brain into the highest speed I could I went through a mental map of the closest retention pond which was probably only a quarter mile away, but across an 8 lane highway. Only one thing to do but hope the parents are as sharp as your wildlife. I put the babies in the water and crossed my fingers.
@andrewmoore7014

I had a recent experience that gave me even greater respect for what you do. I was feeding ducks at a local pond and noticed some ducklings all on their own. I soon realized they were probably orphaned and called a local rehabilitator who said that was probably the case but because of COVID they couldn't send someone out to catch them. They gave me tips on how I could try to, but weren't optimistic. I tried several times over the next few days to coax them to shore so I could toss a towel over them and safely pick them up but they were too skittish. I was amazed when I went back to see if they'd made it after a cold night and found a mother with newly hatched ducklings brooding them even though they were twice the size of hers. They're all just wandering around the pond now like they were always together! If that hadn't happened I'm sure they wouldn't have made it, safely catching animals is quite a challenge and I couldn't pull it off. You folks are amazing! I might volunteer with the wildlife center I called in the future.
@Pattoe
@Pattoe 4 года назад
There must be a survival reason that makes orphaning older ducklings better for a momma duck and her ducklings than shooing them off. Perhaps the larger ducklings help keep her ducklings under control or protect against smaller predators... who knows.
@andrewmoore7014
@andrewmoore7014 4 года назад
My guess is that ducks are bad at math and since hers were just out of the nest she saw these ducklings approaching her and mistook them for her own. Mothers and ducklings imprint on each other soon after hatching so the timing worked out for the orphans.

They're all quite good at learning who's safe to be around and who feeds them, so you may find you have swan friends. I used to hand-feed swans and saw one go from placid to Angry Dragon in about two seconds when someone's stupid little "dog" came over to yap at the ducks and accidentally yapped at the swan too. No harm done but he sure got some exercise crossing to the far side of the park. By the way, don't feed them bread. The RSPB no-grow ground mix or favourite mix is far better, and so are McVities' HobNobs (no chocolate, just the biscuits) but if you share thsoe with ducks they're likely to start following you into shops and pubs, which can get awkward.

Here in the USA, V70's have a cult following along with the 850 wagons. I'd let you have my 850 wagon, but the fuel cost to operate the 6.2 liter V8 would break the bank (that and the steering wheel is on the correct side of the car). Anyhow, speedy recovery Simon and Lawrie.

Thanks very much! This was just a few days before the accident, so sadly that Volvo is no more! We luckily have access to a vehicle we can use for the time being, but we have to wait for the insurance investigation until we can think about the future. Simon will probably still with an older Volvo V70 due to their reliability and cargo space, but we will have to wait and see! Thanks very much for the kind offer though, and for the wishes for Lawrie and Simon :)

6.2 litre? Yikes. 990cc worked well enough for me, thanks. At 95.7 to 158.9 p/l for petrol, 99.5 to 144.9 p/l for diesel ( 4.415 to 7.331 US$ per US gallon ), fuel economy would be a serious concern even if the fumes didn't cause anything nasty.

Just the other night I was out for a walk in my neighborhood and came on a cluster of ducklings in the middle of the road! They let me pick them right up. I carried them home and kept them overnight and released them at daybreak in a local park that's full of ducks. But since then there has been an adult pair of ducks in the neighborhood - I presume searching for their lost ducklings. Did I do the right thing? Should I have just let the ducklings alone where they were?
