What an awesome experience to hold a wild baby owl! We put him back in the tree where the rest of his siblings were. The nest was about 50 ft high but mama owl was within 15 feet of where we placed him. After going out to check on him, we saw that mama is very close and watching over him.

So long as the reason as to why the intervention are explained, this is a happy story. Predators ( dogs , cats) are a problem for many baby birds at this stage. However, it's important for all to know that this is totally normal for owls/birds. They leave the nest without being able to fly and many times end up on the ground, this by no means is your cue to " rescue".

Aww so fierce! Love the beak clacking the whole time lol. Thank you for putting him back, who knows what could have happened to him, predators are always looking for things like that! How wonderful that you were able to watch them grow up! Such a gift! God bless you:)

It's awesome watching the videos of Auggje and his Squad as I like to refer them. I'm in law enforcement and lately the days are longer and chaotically stressful the videos and pics you post here and on Facebook always brighten my day because the compassion you've shown all your animals and even the ones in nature restores my faith in humanity. Keep it up !

awe. you are the sweetest ♥ i was fortunate enough to watch/photograph 2 greathorned owlets this year...watched them take their first flight...you guys did the right thing...too many people call a wild bird care center first...which is wrong...because mom is always watching even when you think she can't see you...GREAT JOB returning baby to the nest:)

I did this for a baby Bluejay after a strong storm threw him out of his nest. I have a dog and a cat, so I didn't want to leave him on the ground where they could get him. he was partly fledged, but he couldn't fly enough to get back into the tree. the mama went for my face a few times before I was able to set him on a branch and let him climb the rest of the way up. (It's a huge elm that shades half my back yard, and the lowest branches are above my head, there's no way he could've gotten back into the tree on his own)

Well, it was nice of you to do this but you should've left it alone. Before people jump me for being heartless, you should know that seeing an owlet on the ground doesn't mean it can't get back into the nest on their own. Owls are very self sufficient. This is partly due to the fact that owls are shitty nest builders (so this happens all the time) and partly because it's their nature. Owlet can and do hunt for their own food, if need be. And they can actually climb up trees and return to their nests 50 feet up, without knowing how to fly themselves. They do this weird walk/scaling thing where they flap their wings as they climb. Just look up Owlet climbing trees on youtube. There's some video's featuring it. Just FYI.
@dryocampa
@dryocampa 7 лет назад
Sure it could maybe get up itself, but it might be eaten by a predator when the adults are away, etc. I would do the same, just to be safe.
@Kendrahf
@Kendrahf 7 лет назад
izzAbizz If it's on the ground and away from the tree, it's probably hunting for itself. If it fell out, it would be climbing back up almost immediately. Unless there's a predator that you can see or it's visibly hurt, leave it alone. You're honestly do more harm than good. This owlet is old enough to be out of the nest. Owlets do this. Almost every variety of owl does this. Experts say leave them alone unless they're in danger or hurt so leave them alone. tinyurl.com/jq6ex

Thanks for all that. We actually called a local bird sanctuary and they walked us through getting it back into the tree. We did this because there are cats that have killed other baby owls in the past and we wanted to do everything we could to save this one!

@Kendrahf
@Kendrahf 7 лет назад
Guy Bourassa Yes. Why listen to ornithologists? Those darn bird specialists act like all they do is study birds! ;) Don't take my word for it. Look it up. Break out that google search. Type in 'what to do if I find an owlet on the ground?' This is a big enough problem that you'll find thousands of sites that'll explain it to you. Have fun!
